For Teachers As someone who started the Primary (5-11) PGCE and dropped out in March (just 3 weeks before lockdown), I would say a big con is the amount of time the workload takes up (especially when Planning, Marking and Tweaking Lesson Plans) on a near daily basis (if not, daily). I couldn’t cope with the ever expanding workload which was why I dropped out.

You forgot to say, "Don't become a teacher if you don't like children." It's amazing how many teachers I've met who obviously don't like children, or understand them. Usually those teachers have no sense of humour either, which is essential if you're with kids all day.

Or if you prefer children with a certain personality. I was very quiet in primary school and I had many teachers that preferred the really loud, over confident kids , it was always those kids who won the school talent show or got the main parts in the Christmas play. I was always left out simply because I was quiet, along with many other kids in my year group who were also shy. All children are different and they should be treated as individuals and given the same amount of opportunities in their school life .

@@sunsetmeadows5729 I'm also a quiet, reserved person. When I was in first grade my parents were told to come to the school because there was something important the teacher needed to tell them. When they got there the teacher said, "I'm very concerned about your son. He's very quiet in class and I think he might be...an...INTROVERT!" My parents thought this was hilarious.

@A Z The worst teachers are those that shame children. Like the teacher who made a child work out a sum on the blackboard and then humiliated him in front of the whole class when he couldn't do it. Why do that? Why be cruel?

As an EYP, you really need to have a passion for the children’s success, a lack of passion is what causes terrible teachers who don’t spot educational issues and will do a disservice to the children!!

Thank you Katie. I’m currently wading through the PGCE and in my first placement. Yes it’s hard and I’m tired all of the time but your videos always give me hope that I can do this. I’m 43 so not young and have my own family. Some days I want to give in but a child will say or do something that makes it worthwhile. Keep posting it’s keeping me going and I’m sure your honestly really helps other teachers too.

I can relate to you as I was constantly drained mentally (especially in my 2nd Placement). If you did make it, then hats off to you and every other PGCE Student who made it to the end (I didn’t, but not without a fight and I mean that figuratively).

Thank you for the effort you put into such a positive and informative video! Definitely helped me with my decision to pursue becoming a teacher. All the best from an Australian in Japan!

I taught for 10 years in primary schools, and now I teach before and after school care. I definitely think anyone who is considering teaching needs to look at how they interact other people - not just kids. Do you hold people's attention when talking with them? Can you get to the point quickly and do people want to know more? Do people notice when you come into a room? Are you able to gain the attention of lots of people in a group when everyone is busy talking or doing individual tasks (even if just to announce a toilet is out of order)? Can you motivate people to do things they didn't want to before, even if just to try something new? Are you able to sympathize but tell people what they need to hear? Can you do difficult conversations and not break out in the guilts or terrors? Can you concentrate on a task in a crowded, noisy room but also know what everyone is doing at all times? If yes to all, qualify as a teacher aide and work with small groups to learn from other teachers. If yes to some or most, but not all, you have many talents that would develop in a different career. For example, If you like children there are careers in child care and paediatrics. If you want to make a difference to the world, science, machines, computers, and the environment needs you. If you are organised but like one to one helping, nursing has travel, skills and diversity you would not believe! And counselling needs helpful, caring and empathetic people. In other words, there is so much more than the classroom. Don't think teaching is the only job you can do if you like children, want to make a difference, like a steady paycheck and to have-fun-while-working.

Couldn’t agree with you more. I don’t check a box with two of those things you listed. I will improve them as I do with anything I want to do. There are cons to every job. Pros to almost every job. People just seem to our teachers in a separate corner where it’s all just “bad”. But I think those people are genuinely clouded by their school experiences as students. I can remember when I was a student, I never ever wanted to be a teacher. I wanted to teach people all my life. But I just felt a teacher wasn’t me. But over the past year: it’s hit me hard. I’ve researched, I’ve thought long and hard for days - attempting to push me away from it. I’ve seriously tried to find nothing but stuff I don’t want to do that’s part of teaching. Nothing so far. All I can find is things I want to do. Now, don’t get me wrong: I want to do teaching: not because it has no cons for me: but because I genuinely want to teach children and inspire them. Nothing else would please me more in life. I don’t have much of a life to be honest, so if I can engulf my life into something such as teaching - then my life is complete.

The last bit was so inspiring :( ❤️❤️❤️ love and respect for all teachers and those training!!

The most important thing a mentor teacher told me was, "learn to be comfortable being uncomfortable." Some great reflections here. Thanks for sharing :)

Most of the teachers I know regret getting into it. It can be an extremely stressful and nasty job, especially as you get higher up the ladder. My wife is a Head of school teacher, she's been doing it for 20 years. She has just handed in her notice, which I'm really pleased about. There isn't a month she doesn't get punched or kicked or spat on.

I always wanted to be a primary school teacher but I suck at Irish and didn't even consider moving to the UK to teach. I moved to Northern Ireland for work (I'm a geologist) and became a STEM ambassador, volunteering in schools throughout the year and I absolutely love it. Some excellent points made! In my first term I asked whether I wanted to continue being a primary school teacher as a NQT! I was lucky because I was well supported (Over 40 years ago!) by the school staff. However, teaching nowadays seems to be more demanding when I speak to the headteacher and teachers as their governor. I persevered, taught in four different primary schools in four different counties and thoroughly enjoyed this profession. Despite being retired I still have not left primary education, it becomes a way of life. Remember that you are developing and changing little people's lives. PROS? Hard work, late nights and interesting conversations with colleagues and parents! Lookout for being stressed and examine your worklife balance. Some schools are good on this. CONS A great career with progression. You can follow your passions in life and share those abiding interests with the children you teach.

A great video on some aspects of what it means to be a teacher. For me, the pros outweigh the cons on a number of levels and it is always about working smarter not harder.

Thanks for this insight, I will be honest I am 25 year old lad who feels like I am not quite where I want to be and I went across to Africa Ghana to volunteer teaching sports and P.E and I absolutely loved it and feel proud of the impact it had and I left. I am now considering knuckling down to do all this and whilst I am 25 I still have time. There are a lot of cons but I really want a career that offers purpose and I feel this is it.

For Teachers it went really well thank you! More nerve racking than I expected, but I included everything I wanted to say and the tasks were fine! I think I did my best so fingers crossed!🤞

I am currently deciding my life plans - choosing my options of where to go to do A levels or things alike. In February i am going to my old primary school as i have been considering teaching for a few years. I like the idea of making a positive impact towards education but having my own twist on things. My granny was a primary school teacher in London for several decades and my granddad was a musician playing in pubs across the mersyside. To honour both of them i am considering being the teacher who would mainly use music as a way of teaching as i play guitar. When selling her house due to her passing away last November i found a book from when she retired full of children wishing her a happy retirement. That made me so proud of her as i know that she was loved by many. Some of her kids even went to the funeral. The only thing is i have a stutter that sometimes becomes very hard to control.... is it okay for a teacher to have a stutter?

I’ve been so sure since I was in school myself that I didn’t want to be a teacher because of an incident that happened with my mum (who was a primary teacher for 25+ years) but I’m at a point that a stable salary and consistent hours sound sooo appealing. I currently have a degree in Drama which is awesome, but is near impossible to get a job in that’s long term and decent pay. I’ve done some sort of teaching through drama (going into schools and doing projects with the kids for a set number of weeks) and I did really enjoy it. My fears with teaching I think are more based around dealing with troublesome parents than they are about the actual job or the kids. Have you ever had / heard of any incidents involving parents threatening their kids’ teacher...? I’m probably feeling particularly paranoid because of what happened to my own mum, but at the same time have been told more times than I can count that I’m really good with kids and have I considered teaching. Any advice would be greatly appreciated xxx

From what you´re saying I can only infer that your mom was somehow threatened by a student´s parent. If that´s the case, then I´m sad to hear. It should never happen! In general, what I hear from other teachers (I´m currently studying to become one), is that you can have argumentative parents who put on conflicts on behalf of their children, but I´ve never heard of anyone being threatened (I hear of one case of a legal threat, but that was an exceptional case). You can consider the norm that parents are quite reasonable and friendly - and with some skills and training you can them into solid collaboration and form really good relationships with them! ;) Some may be less involved, some may be skeptical or critical (but not threatening). Threatening parents are definitely a small exception to the rule. Most teachers will never experience this (just guessing, 99-99,5 % of them).

I am definitely late here, but I'm 15, and I've been planning on becoming a teacher since I was 12, in the middle there were other jobs too, but now I have cleared up my mind and 100% want to become a PRIMARY school teacher! I'm from Europe and English isn't my first language, so I'm sorry if my grammar mistakes trigger you. Thank you for this video!❤️

I think all languages are beautiful - I am especially amazed by anyone who is bilingual as I sadly only speak English (my students shock me every day with how easily they switch languages) I am happy to hear that you are considering becoming a teacher. It's interesting hearing that you will have to work beyond your hours during term time, as what the hell do people expect? I work as an environmental consultant at the moment and I am rarely off the clock during the week. I take calls at 9pm sometimes and before project deadlines I will work evenings and weekends. Any graduate that wants a professional career, it's going to require extra work beyond the 9-5. If you don't want to work extra hours then get a job at McDonald's, that is the reality of it.

I'm 37 working in a analytics job related to the stock mkt . I dont have a teaching background but would really like to , salary will be a pay cut for me but I am sure I will be happy

Hello Ahmed! Thank you for the lovely positive messages. In the UK you need a PGCE or equivalent form of QTS to be able to teach and have a teacher wage (you can be an unqualified teacher but the wage is a lot lower) I hope that you manage to find the job you are looking for!

Thanks for video. How I find my Training providers in UCAS application for School Direct PGCE?

I'm 13, I've always wanted to be a Vet but I have always had a spot in the back of my head for teaching. Recently, I've realized that I wouldn't really be happy being a Vet and would prefer to be a primary school teacher instead. Overall, do you think the job is good? As in, do you like it personally? I'm really drawn to it and my dad is a secondary school teacher too so that's a plus. :) Thank youu!

You can become a vet and then do a pgce after in primary education instead of doing a degree in primary education which means you can only teach and limits you in case you change your mind.

I'd like to ask you if you have any experience or knowledge about foreigners hired in English preschools and primary schools? Atm I am working for British preschool in Poland (we mix Polish and British curriculum, and teach in English) and I was wondering if British employers consider foreigners as good EYFS and KS1 teachers? But..when I started I was told about the council scheme where I get paid my full time wage while getting put through the course and get guaranteed employment for 4 years (aka the DREAM SCENARIO!!!) Hi, I am planning to do primary education degree at open university in October. But I wanted to ask what I need to do/study in order to become a qualified primary school teacher?

Hi I have a question, people say teachers don’t really stay in there job for long. If not what is an easy job they could move to?

Am a degree holder and I love teaching with passion, pls I will want you to guide me become a teacher.

And the holidays are not really holidays either, after the 50 hours of marking and other tasks you often do. If interstate or overseas excursions are running, you are on duty the whole time 24/7. After public holidays like Easter and Christmas are factored in, the vacation aspect dwindles in its appeal. If you are willing to devote your life to this job, it can be secure, fun and rewarding.

Thankyou for the videos. However I have been working in the Fashion & Graphic industry for 12+ years & there is a ceiling in terms of payscale as a Senior Designer (it is too a stressful job, no work life balance, long hours many of which don’t add up to the salary you achieve) but these teaching payscales, only the top end ones, are worth me leaving my industry for. Very disappointing as I always wanted to teach FE/ University (UK) but I cannot warrant forking out for a PGCE for those quite frankly CRAP payscales sorry. At my age I simply cannot afford to take such a payscale drop to start again. They need to pay teachers a realistic wage. My boyfriend is ex-military with no degree level education & makes more as HGV driver 🙄

Hi Katie, I’m really struggling in my career path. I seem to be drawn to primary teaching recently but I’m worried that I’m not clever enough for it. I have a grade 7&6 in English lit&language, a 5 in maths and 5-5 in science. I haven’t sat my a levels yet but I’m predicted A/B’s and a merit/distinction. Any advice? 🤍🤍🤍

All you need is to get a grade 5 in maths English and science! You’re doing amazing. I’m in the same position with English my best. In science I struggle with grades at 3/4/5s. However, I’m aiming to get 5s and I’m working hard. I’m sure you’ll do amazing!!! 💞

It's so interesting to hear how teaching works in the UK. In Germany you have to study at least 2 subjects like german and biology and for primary school you have to do german and math and can choose another subject. After Uni we are at school for 1,5 to 2 years and get marks on how we teach and we have a courses and get marks at school law and psychology. It's a long way to be a teacher in germany. How is the eay in the UK?

There are many courses in the UK that lead to teaching. We have the BA route where you study teaching specifically and a route where you take a different subject then add a ‘PGCE’ at the end. As for A levels, they don’t seem to mind what you study as long as you take English and get enough points. I know there are new routes being added all the time though to encourage more teachers to apply. Are you a teacher in Germany currently?

Can one eventually go into part time? I'm thinking long term - what if I gave birth? what if I slowly want to retire? Any advice would be appreciated :)

Sorry to hear this. Teaching is such a tough job. I do feel like you should battle through it - you might find it easier once you have your own class. It’s great when you can put your stamp on things. I’m making some more support videos soon so maybe they will be of use to you. Eg. First year of teaching what I wish I’d known etc. Where are you studying?

@@ForTeachersChannel Teach First is a hands-on training route; you have a class from day one! you don't really 'study' in the normal PGCE sense, that's why it's a different level of stress!

Secondary school teachers have a slightly higher starting salary and overall pay scale than primary school teachers. It's also easier to find jobs as a secondary school teacher and much easier to get onto a secondary teaching course, there are even generous bursaries available if you have a relevant subject degree. Of course this is because 11-18 seems a less popular age range and thus has a relatively high attrition rate.

I am currently 13 and ever since I was 5 I wanted to become a teacher. I am starting my research and studies now even tho its pretty early I just worry about the future a lot. Also I have a question, how many years in college/uni do you have to do?

You can do a 3 year degree. People who already have a degree can do a 1 year masters called a PGCE or they can go through a paid route that is far more competitive. As seen as you are still young and do not have a degree yet then your best bet is to do a 3 year teaching degree

Hi Katie, love this video!!! I am currently in the process of applying to university to study Primary Education. I just had a question that I wanted to ask. If you study just a normal 3 year course and gain QTS, are you still able to progress to senior members of staff in the further without masters credits? Thank you x

Hi Georgia! Thank you for taking a minute to leave a comment. I studied BA Honours Primary Education with QTS (3 year course total) and have never once been told anything at all about needing master credits for management. As far as I know, any teacher can progress to this level. There are courses that you need to complete but I don’t think the type of degree impacts this. Honestly, I don’t think schools pay a lot of attention to the route you took into teaching. I’ve discussed with many teacher friends and all of us seem to agree that this didn’t come up in interview and it was more based on how well you performed in the classroom/ your placement results! I could be wrong and I’ll ask about this when I get chance to speak to my head teacher friend. Which uni are you looking at in particular? I had a great time at Sheffield Hallam ☺️ Happy to answer any more questions!

For Teachers thank you for getting back to me! I've applied to Sheffield Hallam too! But like Nottingham Trent is 4 years and has the opportunity to collect masters credits to help get into SLT roles, so I just wondered if the 3 year course can get you into these roles x

I’ve never heard of this before. There are pros and cons to 3 year or 4 year course. The 3 year gets you into teaching sooner and earning quicker. The 4 year gives you longer to learn about teaching. The 3 year is a big workload for all three years whereas the 4 is average for 3 then one intense year for PGCE. Both have pros and cons! I have two leadership roles and I didn’t do the 4 year course, just be careful they aren’t trying to make it sound more desirable as it’s one extra year of student fees... I have never heard of needing credits before. Research properly and feel free to message me any time during the selection process! Whatever path you take it’ll be such an incredible journey ☺️

Hi Ruby. I’m not 100% sure but I will tell you what I remember. I know I needed to pass English and maths for GCSE (I don’t think I needed A grades but definitely no Ds!) I studied English, media and graphic design for A level but I think this is based more on points and less on subjects. To do a PGCE primary you will need GCSE's or SQCFs in English and Maths (and Cymraeg Iaith Cyntaf/Welsh First Language in Wales). In England and Wales (but not Scotland and Northern Ireland) you will also need GCSE'S in Science. In England you need C/4 grades or above in all of these. In Scotland you need a Level 6 in English and Level 5 in Maths. In Wales you need a C grade or above in Science and a B grade or above in Maths and English or Welsh. As of this year (for the next academic year) universities in Wales will now accept a B grade in Numeracy in place of Maths and a B grade in Welsh or English literature in place of either language. In Northern Ireland you need 5 GCSEs or above at grades C or above. 3 of these can be in any subject but two must be in English and Maths. As for university subject, you need half of your credits or more from a subject at least related to the primary curriculum in each respective nation of the UK.

My wife's a head teacher and I know a lot of normal teachers too. Sadly it's not something most of got into with the benefit of hindsight. My wife wants to leave her job as head of school and train in something else. Others I know already have, sad but true.

@@dorcassakyiamah7164 If you want to teach outside the UK then you can teach English as a graduate in many countries that don't speak English as a first language, this does not need QTS. In terms of being a teacher that isn't just teaching English in China and such, then the only English speaking countries that recognise UK teachers are Australia and New Zealand, as they recognise UK teaching qualifications. In places like Canada and the USA, teaching would require qualifying all over again and you wouldn't get a visa as a UK teacher to begin with. In Europe you may be able to teach English as a foreign language, but obviously their schools have their own language and own qualifications to teach.
