Routes into Teaching UK | PGCE, BA HONOURS, TEFL? Real Experiences!

What is the best route into Teaching? It’s so hard to choose when there are so many routes into teaching in the UK. In this video we discuss our own experiences of PGCE and BA Honours Primary Education with QTS and talk about why we chose them. As teachers, we both ended up in the same jobs but our routes into teaching were very different. Which route into teaching did you choose? Let us know so we can support the next generation of teachers with their choices!

I am an Indian and I have a Bachelor's and Master's in Computer Science (acquired in India) with 3 years of experience in Software Development field. I have a lot of passion for teaching and I want to switch over my career to teaching. What will be my prospects as teacher in UK, if I do a PGCE in UK?

I just finished my degree (BA Honours, Education - Primary, with the OU). I did a CELTA, have 11 years experience teaching overseas and I was an ESL manager in a big school. I'm 37 years old and can't get a job as a TA and was rejected for ITT. I need to resit my math GCSE, I have no doubt I can pass it with C or above, but have been unable to find anywhere to retake it in the past year. I see/think people who volunteer in schools have the best chance of getting a teaching job. Today I had an interview and did a demo lesson/activity that went so well but I am left with the feeling I was never going to be given the job. I have a family of 5 to support and regret spending all that time and money doing a degree if it is useless. I am seriously fed up being back in UK, it is so depressing and unfair here.

I’m doing a PGCE course next year with Sheffield Teacher Alliance. I have chosen this route because I’ve worked as a teaching assistant for the last 4 years. In this time I’ve had loads of experience in teaching small groups and covering classes for teachers PPA time. I was advised to do this course as I have lots of classroom experience which should be helpful in the very intense year I will be having. I think if I knew I wanted to be a teacher early on I would have done my whole degree in Teaching instead of a board course in Early Childhood study. Anyways that's my experience I hope that's helpful to anyone reading! 😊 X

Ciretta hello! I think the school direct is personally the best route. There is more hands on learning and less assessment for the uni side. It’s been 4 years since I been to uni at Hallam and I didn’t fancy doing more uni work. I think if you have the backing of your head go for it! Hope that helps x

I went to teacher training collage and did the full 3 years to become a specialist teacher with professional qualifications and been teaching both state and private education for over 20 years hands on in the classroom Their is so many routes in to teaching these days but the best training is you never stop learning Teaching requires total dedication and commitment and a passion for working with children of all ages from primary through to high education ! I gained full teaching diploma topping up to full teaching degree as lots of CPD training ongoing Love teaching and supply teaching is a great way to gain experience in the classroom and APEL x

I did a regular degree in Geography and business. Had no plan to become a teacher but after months of job searching after my graduation my parents said why not do a Tefl then you can travel and have a taste of teaching. I started my Tefl course and I instantly got a job. Basically this school in Slovakia were desperate as two teachers had jyst been fired and a couple had left to have a baby back in England. So I really got thrown in at the deep end. I had only done the 20 hour in class course and 0 praftice teaching. I loved it though and it really suited me. Tefl is a lot more speaking and games and fun than regular school and I didn't have all of the scrutiny and I could plan or not plan what I wanted. Tefl is great but it can also be brutal. At first I thought it was so much easier than being a 'real' teacher but you soon realise that there are different pressures. Instead of driving to one school and having my own class/classrooms and respect in Tefl jobs you might spend 4 hours a day driving or on the metro to different clients. Now in Milan even just 20 lessons can fill up your day and you really don't get paid enough. I loved czech and slovakia but it was tremendously stressful, in winter I had to drive in the snow and ice at 7am teach a few hours in a school then drive around the hills and valleys getting to the next school or company. Some days you set off at 6.30am and get home at 10pm. Then Milan is amazing but there isn't enough work and money. I was very happy for the first 3 years so I would certainly recommend it just make surr that your salary offer is enough to live on. €1000 inCzech I lived like a king, €1100 in Brindisi I lived well and bought a ps4 €1500 in Milan I was doing ok going out all the time and going to most Ac milan. Then my last two years have been horrid because they cut my minimum monthly salary from 30 paud hours a week min to just 20. The virus has really killed me because normally in spring I work double and get back to avdecent bank balance. Then I had a new job in China and a lot more money. If you get a bit of luck the right place for you and good money it is the best job. So much fun and you teach all different people and less planning and beurocracy/ofsted/reports marking discipline meetings etc. Find a bad company or have some bad luck and you find yourself hating life and deep in your overdraft.

I've just finished my student teaching! I went through a Schools Direct PGCE Route which meant I was basically thrown straight into teaching from day one of school in September. I had uni days most Fridays but otherwise was in school the whole time. I taught across a bunch of year groups (three in my host school, 1 in a complimentary placement) and by the end was teaching 100% (it increased every half term to reach that point). To anyone interested in schools direct its a very good route for seeing the reality of teahing and the workload tnat comes with it. However, it was one of the hardest years of my life (which is saying something!) and unfortunately much of my cohort did not make it to the end of the course (around fifty percent it seemed from our last day). If anyone has questions about schools direct I'm happy to answer them - although my experience will not be everyone's - it can vary massively depending on your host school or alliance.

For Teachers I actually got offered jobs in my host and complimentary school on the same day - it was very flattering but also very tricky! In the end I chose my complimentary school to start in September but ended up doing maternity cover at my host school for the last few weeks. Doing Schools Direct meant I had already been teaching 90%of lessons for that class so it was quite a nice transition (if tricky to take over at the end of a school year!)

I am studying BA(hons) English Language and Linguistics (TESOL pathway) at the University of Central Lancashire. This course includes the Trinity Cert TESOL at about a fifth of the price, which you complete in your second year. Half of my lectures are TESOL based with specialist module options such as teaching young learners. The other half of the modules are linguistics based. After I graduate, I'm planning on doing a PGCE Primary Education (3-7 years or early years). Hopefully after all that I will move to Hong Kong and teach there in an international school 😁 wish me luck! 😍 love your videos 😍

Can also begin with a HND in Advanced practice working with children and families for 2 years, then do primary education (QTS) top up for 3rd year. Good route because linking practical to theoretical is much more prominent and you can really get into school life alongside studying!

Honestly the children don’t seem to mind your age (they didn’t know it, to be fair) the children will judge you on your personality and ability to teach. Thanks for sharing your insights. I've got some queries about teaching in England with a PGCE. I've got a PGCE from the University of Sunderland with three years of Teaching Assistant experience (however, my capacity was a co-teacher in the UK sense). I did my PGCE placement at an international school overseas and have recently moved to London for my MA in Mathematics Education. Applying for jobs as a secondary maths teacher at independent and international schools in London, but I've not been successful thus far and I'm getting the feeling that it's because I don't have a QTS. Do you think there's any hope for those who don't have a QTS but have a PGCE? The whole system in England seems very confusing compared to overseas situations...would appreciate any advice. Thanks

Hi. I have been in the teaching industry for 14 years. I respect you for doing the job and I can see you love teaching. The problem in the last few years is we are seeing an influx of non native speakers with Degrees. Poor language skills in English. People with a Degree who are not interested in teaching and just want to party. People who expect special rules and huge salary's for doing nothing but walking into a class . Screwing up the target language and refusing to do lesson plans or follow the dress code. We have to train them up and it just feels like a total waste of time! They really do not care about students or connect with them. The schools are scared to stand up to them because there is a shortage of real teachers. So it is better to have a warm body in the class than nothing. I am the only native teacher in my school. I am the only teacher doing lesson plans. The rest just think of games to play in class. I do not think any of them know how to make a lesson plan or are interested. I used to work with real teachers I could learn from. Now I just feel all I can learn from are my students.

Hello! I am thinking to do the teaching training in UK but I am not sure if I can do it as I have not much experiences in education. I have done my psychology degree and I am doing my MA of International Approaches to Early Childhood Education right now but I feel like I could not lead the whole class and prepare the lesson as I have never tried to do something like that? I am feeling like the teaching qualification/training put you in position to teach just like that without any preparation on how you should behave and what to do or even how to prepare your own lesson. How you even know how to prepare one? also I am feeling like the interview for teaching training, which is often wih test skills like giving the tasks to show how would you lead this and that and teach them, like how could I know and be assesmented on that if I have never learnt how to do it? You just know it?

However, I have now made the decision not to pursue a career in Law as it isn't something I see myself practicing in the future. I really want to teach. What do you think is the best step for me? Hey Ryan! It might be tricky without A levels as the general route is A level- uni for a BA Primary Ed degree or a regular degree plus a PGCE. You could look into a course called Schools Direct or perhaps consider a TEFL as you could use this to travel too. Let me know what you’re thinking and I’ll see if I can provide some extra information! And thanks for visiting the channel ☺️

I sometimes worry that this may be the case. I’m in that boat right now (Katie) whereas Ryan has an English lit degree too. But at the same time I think teaching is very transferable anyway and there are so many opportunities for a different career. Teachers are generally organised and it can be seen as a desirable job to other employers. In our video ‘reasons to become a primary school teacher’ I left a link in the description about other jobs teachers can get after teaching. Maybe check it out and see if it helps you ☺️

  • @adamleonoad8756

    @adamleonoad8756

    Жыл бұрын

I know my friends have done their PGCE while working via. Sunderland University. I think media studies would be amazing to teach. Good luck with your journey!

Hey, There are many bursaries for secondary teaching depending on what you want to teach I would say check the “get into teaching” website for more info on bursaries and routes into teaching , they also have a page that can set up work experience for you which will help entry onto your preferred route Hope this helps all the best.

PGCE is a painfully bad use of time and energy. What a waste of everybodys time. Of 10 finishers not one ive spoken with has positive experience or teaching job. What do u get at the end of it? back at square one. Do Efl and zone out, might as well
