Should Biden Step Aside? Wajahat Ali & Norman Solomon Debate Democratic Options for 2024 Race

Support our work: democracynow.org/donate/sm-de...
As calls mount for President Joe Biden to step down as the presumptive Democratic Party nominee over concerns surrounding his mental and physical capacity to lead, we host a debate between two longtime members of the Democratic Party: Wajahat Ali, who recently authored a column subtitled "Biden Is Very Old and Out of Touch, and Here's Why You Should Vote for Him," and Norman Solomon of RootsAction.org, which sponsors the Step Aside Joe campaign.
At 81 years old, Biden is already the oldest person to ever serve as president of the United States. His recent public appearances, including a poor performance at his first presidential debate against presumptive Republican Party nominee Donald Trump - who, if reelected, would be the second-oldest person to ever serve as president - have renewed questions about his health and ability. Biden has thus far resisted pressure to suspend his reelection campaign, even as the U.S. liberal coalition fractures over his candidacy. Ali says that now is the time to unite over a candidate to prevent a second Trump presidency, and that without a clear alternative, only Biden can run a winnable campaign. Meanwhile, Solomon argues that Biden's performance thus far has already critically weakened his chances of winning the election. "Uniting behind a losing candidate is a bad idea," he says.

I think the progressives supporting Biden is to protect themselves from being scapegoats like in 2016. If Biden does step down it’s not going to be because the Progressives asked him to. It’s going to be because other elder statesmen pressure him to. Honestly seems like a win win situation for the squad. If Biden loses it’s his fault for not passing the torch and if he wins the squad backed him and showed unity.

Because of the incumbency advantage only Harris can replace Biden, and she is also the only one to have access to Biden's war money. If she is at the top of the ticket, she has never been tested nationally and she would have racism and sexism working against her. An open convention, the sitting presidents party has never won with one this late in the race.

Funnily enough, I am a tin hat person. The immunity wasn't for DT, it was for Biden. How else do you get the Democratic party out of the violation for the unfair trail of Donald Trump? As much as I dislike Trump, the democrats are making it difficult to support them. I would vote for Trump over Biden everyday. Biden is obviously not involved or influential. He is completely incapable of retaining his own party. Allowing them to behave as they want while blaming "someone else" ((Biden)).

There were some Republican-funded polls that exaggerated the chances of a red wave, and which were seized upon by corporate media. But many of the polling outlets that were accurate about 2022 (and went ignored on cable news) are currently showing a dismal outlook for the Biden campaign, and I think we need to take that seriously.

I'm glad Wajahat Ali brought up the example of the French elections. Because in France, the left *changed course dramatically* in just one week. Candidates doing poorly *withdrew* in order to bolster the left overall, a strategy that happened too quickly and dynamically for polls to capture. The lesson from the French victory is clear: when you are projected to lose, *you need to change your course* and pick a better strategy. So again, thank you, Wajahat Ali, for raising this illustrative example.

@@missx147 I don't think either Democrats or Republicans will ever do anything like guaranteed housing, healthcare, education, income, or employment type policies until we make them. Both parties are beholden to corporations and economic elites. It'd be a lot harder and more expensive for companies to get people to work most crappy jobs if we weren't worried about starving to death or becoming homeless. As long as we're desperate, the wealthy owner class can pay us less and keep more for themselves. Most politicians are millionaires and part of the owner class and/or get donations from them. They use culture war stuff to get votes for one party or the other (equal rights are definitely important) but they use that stuff so they can basically ignore stuff like guaranteed housing, healthcare, etc. Unfortunately, the same owner class also owns all the newspapers, TV news channels, and almost everywhere else we get information, so they make sure to never talk about any of this. Search for this paper written by researchers from Princeton, basically it shows how politicians only care about rich people, it's called _Testing Theories of American Politics: Elites, Interest Groups, and Average Citizens_ I think it's going to take a revolution to fix things, some people don't. I hope I'm wrong, but looking at all the violence and suffering the owner class is already using against working people, I don't think they're going to stop until we make them stop. Workers already do all the jobs that keep the world going. It's time we had a say deciding what all our labor is meant to be accomplishing. Guaranteed, housing, healthcare, and education for everyone. Nobody's gonna give it to us tho, we have to take it. Solidarity forever ✊

I agree with everything but the idea that Harris should become the nominee. While I like her and think she's competent, I have not heard anything but insults for her for years. Plus, sadly there are too many racists and sexists for her to win. If our Democracy didn't hang in the balance, then sure, let Kamala be the nominee. However, these aren't normal times. @@simonepeterson3301 Not a problem I think. The Supremes have made it easy for individuals (and corporations are people too) to set up a pack that spends unlimited funds. Biden and Harris can just exit and leave the money in a Pac which will operate independently of the chosen successors. In any case if just spending a huge pile of money were that only relevant issue, we would not be in this pickle. A losing candidate (Biden or Harris) will lose regardless of how much money they have. There is plenty of money in America which remains raiseable by the chosen candidate. Let's move on and win.

My grandmother had it, and it looks just like that. I believed I was already seeing signs before he was elected last time. Unfortunately, his wife and Obama need to set him straight. It takes courage to stand up to The President, especially when he's not mentally all there and will respond with excessive and out of control anger. He needs to see him leaving is what is needed to save the country.

As an international observer, I think much more than worrying about who would win the presidential campaign and elections 4 months from now... Americans should seriously concentrate their efforts and concerns on whom will be a suitable and fit president to lead them as a nation for another 4 years. That, including the prospective candidate's global perspective, international views (& alliances) and foreign policy and what impact they would potentially have on the future of the American people - whom should be top priority and at the centre of all this debate - all things considered.

It’s crazy, but trying to help people with mental health issues actually goes like this in a lot of states. You can’t just make a claim against someone and expect the government to do anything. They usually ask the person affected if they want help. If they can speak a few sentences and reject help, it’s going to be a difficult journey. Same with Biden, he thinks he’s great.

Would love to hear a discussion about the similarities and differences between the "leaders" (Biden and Trump) on foreign policy versus domestic policy. The world lives under the threat of NATO as the front for the military industrial complex, while US domestic policy suffers (health care, education, housing, cost of living, criminal justice system, homelessness etc). As an outsider (Canadian), it seems to me that the impending election agenda ignores what US citizens need versus the war monger goals of both the Republican and Democratic Parties. A discussion of what citizens need would undermine a fascist agenda which grows out of alienation and frustration. Democracy Now please raise the bar!

This is why the democrats should have allowed the normal primary election process to happen. Instead they either didn't allow competition in some states or outright canceled primaries in other states. Biden never even debated anyone during the farce of a primary we had. They knew Biden's health was failing and tried to shield him. Now we see that the emperor has no clothes and they're still doubling down.
