Wonder why Shotokan dropped this kata? It's pretty fundamental with a lot of depth to it. (I learned the Kyokushin variant.)

At a shotokan dojo I used to attend, we used to practice this kata. But I always thought it was from Goyu Ryu. Certainly it's not an official JKA kata nowadays at least

@@vvv77920 Because he insisted on Shotokan's as a separate style, while Funakoshi insisted there should be no karate styles. Also he "invented" sports Karate! Karate is Not a sport!

@@vvv77920 So? Popularity is not more important then authenticity and effectiveness! Just look what they did to WTF Taekwondo! It is ultra popular and widespread but it's a once serious martial art that became a joke. Bunch a je*k offs flapping around with their legs for no reason at all! Nakayama caused Shotokan to become "Shitokan"! Look at JKA instructors like Tetsuya Naka and even the late great Kanazawa... they all went to Okinawa in search of the roots... anyway always remember Motobu sensei's words.

@@riddickriddick9520 After 5 years of Shotokan I once had a fight with two pickpocketing guys in a crowded tram and I haven't been able to use not even one single Shotokan technique. Even the makiwara training Shotokan style did not help. I had neither the time nor the space to form my fist. A real fight is not in a space arranged with a referee where you greet each other at the beginning and at the end with the purpose of "scoring imaginary points".

Funakoshi replaced Sanchin with Hangestu.

Seisan was replaced by Hangetsu.

actually sanchin kata exist in all styles. it's just that shotokan is not included in the list, in the list of shotokan katas there are more katas for competition only so that the word sanchin shotokan has very few references. for kata sanchin I took references from shito ryu and goju ryu. correct me if i was wrong

Hangetsu is the shotokan equivalent. Seems funakoshi acted a fool and made a few changes to the old school things before motobu put him in his place 😂

No, it doesn't. There's basically only one Shorin school that practices it, Eizo Shimabukuro's school (and his students, most likely). None of tbe other Shorin ryu schools have it

​@@RK-um2bjWrong. Hangetsu is a version of Seisan, not Sanchin. The story of Motobu beating Funakoshi is just hearsay from Motobu and his students and cannot be validated. If you listen to the story carefully, it most probably is a fabrication because Funakoshi would never have accepted such an idiotic challenge. If he had, it would've gone against all his teachings he had written down.

Nope. It isn't present in many Shorin schools, especially those that don't participate in competitions, like Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu.

Very similar to the Goju Ryu Sanchin that I know. He didn't appear to be doing the breathing or muscle tension though. Very interesting.

I honestly don't know whether this is Shotokan or not, but assuming it is, in Shotokan the breathing that is used is always hidden or "secret" breathing. Even in the similar Shotokan kata Hangetsu (Seisan) the practitioner does not breathe loudly, The idea is that one does not show weakness to the opponent related to your breathing.

They used to do San Chin in Shotokan?! For real?!

Один человек предложил некий набор движений, который якобы ведёт к совершенству. Возможно он был прав, возможно....но кто это определил? Кто это подтвердил? Кто-то проверял- а может этот набор несовершенен? Но нет, вы все просто повторяете чужой выбор....разве каратэ - это копирование? Ведь копирование и искусство- это два противоположных понятия!

Если мы понимаем каратэ, мы видим суть и смысл, логику движений. Повторяет недумая лишь ученик на начальном уровне обучения, затем , если обучение верное, приходит понимание.
