i have a 3d printer, i wonder if i could design a wad like for a shotgun but for a 44cal cylinder. only question would be, would you rather have it like a cup to hold the shot, or like how you use the cardboard and just hold the back? edit, i made a 44cal wad at 1.20mm tall (which is about 2x thickness of soda box cardboard, but i dont think the little puck form would ima try and design a cup type i guess?

I originally started carrying an 1860 Colt replica just for the shot load capability for hunting in the swamp many years ago. That was before the Taurus Judge came out. I find a .44 cal percussion revolver more effective that CCI shot loads for revolvers. For .44 cal, I use 20 grains of Pyrodex P, an over powder lubed wad, #5 lead shot compressed, and an over shot lubed wad. For .36 cal, 15 grains Pyrodex P, an over powder lubed wad, #9 shot compressed, and an over shot lubed wad. .44 cal is a more effective load, especially in a Colt Dragoon or a Walker. Same load for a Colt or Remington revolver. Cap and ball revolvers are very versatile! Follow Blackie's safety advice. Don't shoot too close to your feet or unintended target, and don't shoot plywood because the pellets can bounce back. Use eye protection.

I use # 12 shot for snakes. I have tried #5, of course, but the donut pattern reduces the pattern on target at ten yards. #12 is ultra-light, but, due to the intense pattern, takes out timber and sidewinders well on Scout outings.

Good Safety Tip on the Cyl. Gap, this also applies to any Revolvers. I recently had my Pietta 1860 Army out trying to Sight it in and wasn't thinking about the Gap. 25 grains of GOEX FFFg puts out a very Hot flame and I ended up setting my shooting bag I had under the Muzzle on fire, I spent about an hour and a half picking up about 200 little plastic pellets so as not to litter,

Use'e' the red dot. 6 grains, and primers will work if you add a few specks of powder inside the primer, and or wadding that can hold powder tight to the primer nipple. 6 grains will work well and safe for just about any load in any newly made 1851. And probably quite a bit more but 6 grains of red dot or shotgun powder works well.

Good job Blackie. This is an interesing creative practical, insightful idea of making your own Snake Shot charges for use in a percussion revolver. The painted Soda Carton paper looks like an effective wadding material. Author Hovey Smith, has used Paper Egg Carton and Styrofome Egg and Meat carton material as a Wadding materal for various percussion cap&ball revolver charges. Snake Pellet/ BB loades for C&B revolvers has been on my mind for some time. I will be also conducting tests of various methods of Snake Shot loades to include Pellet/BB loades in Combustable Paper Cartridges made from Thin Bakers Wax Paper for percussion cap&ball revolvers.

For shotguns equal weight of powder and shot is a good starting point. You will find this is pretty matched. In 12g a 1 ounce / 1 ounce is good. in 20g it 3/4 to 3/4 I'd say 1/2 oz and 1/2oz is probley a max load for a .44 But I also don't believe in bird shot for snakes. In my option and experience #4 shot is best for snakes. Bird shot #7, or #8 is terrible. As is 00 buck. #6 will work, but #4 is far better. Never tried #2 Oh and the most interesting shot I used was dried navy beans. It worked at about 10 feet. But not something I'd use unless you have nothing else. Long story. But the short version is. The snake was right outside the door. The only thing I had was a flintlock pistol .68 cal, powder and the navy beans. oh and one angry rattler at the bottom of the steps.

Hay Blacky try going to a drug store and get you some pill making jelliton capsules that are about 36 cal. After you have powder and wax seated in a chamber take one half of a jell capsule ( trimmed to properly length) fill capsule with shoot and insert into chamber. If not a tight fit put a wax wad or paper wad on top to stop capsule and shot from falling out. The jell capsule seems to hold the shot longer together like a shotgun wad and won't blow thru the shot. The empty jell capsule's come in a couple different sizes. They worked for me. Thanks for your videos and your info on BP and woods craft.

Great video! Never tried it yet, have been meaning to do so. Along these lines, have you or have you seen anyone use the .36 Colt bullet through a .410 shotgun? I currently load BP .410 loads with 3 x .380 balls (full choke gun >.380, I think it's actually .395) and have a lot of fun with these. At 10 yards, will often stack the balls through a single hole, and 15 yards about a 6" spread, and at 20 yards, between 6 and 8 inch spread. With 22 gr pyrodex, the individual balls seem to have more visible destructive force than 9 mm ball rounds through my Canik! Thanks again!
