Maestro Jansons had a long career as conductor, notably for the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and he was known for his interpretations of the works of Shostakovich and other Russian composers, as well as Mahler. As a violinist who has played at this concerto for many a moon, and with no particular success, I must say that I admire Ms. Hahn's performance greatly. This is not a work for talented amateurs. Her technique and spirited playing set the standard for the rest of us. Shostakovich wrote 2 VIOLIN CONCERTOS, and I can't say i understand No. 2, but I've been in love with No. 1 since college. By the way, have you heard Shostakovich's SYMPHONY NO. 9? That's where he gave the one-fingered salute to Stalin, and lived to tell the tale. His memoirs--TESTAMENT--are well worth a read.

This was recorded the day before her birthday, if I understand the text correct. At one point it said 2000-11-26. She was born on the 27th.

This is my favorite violin concerto by my favorite composer performed by my favorite violinist. The nocturne movement speaks to me so profoundly and is by far my favorite slow movement
In stead of fleeing from the USSR, he expressed his fear, his sufferings in this way, absolutely stunning work! What a brave guy shostakovich was!
Hilary Hahn is great. Can't stop listening to this performance. This orchestra, Hilary and conductor did an exceptional job...

This should have gotten a standing ovation, are you kidding me !!!!!
Everyone delights in the magical sound of the violin. But it's Shostakovich! Gone is the drama, the despair, the deep sadness. As it can be found, for example, with Kogan and Kavakos.

I can feel it from this performance. Although, I have never heard Kogan or Kavakos', so what I hear is un-tainted by the need to compare it to something.
This is so marvelous to watch and to listen to. Thanks for posting.
Breathtaking and unbelievable! This is as good as it gets 😍
Pieces like this are next to impossible to memorize, let alone play with such insight and perfection of tone.
Awesome ~ the best quality so far on KZread ~^^ Love it.
Thanks for uploading this. What a great quality of the video. I'm amazed!
Saw Hahn in Stockholm about this time (Beethoven’s concerto) and was absolutely astonished how she was already a master of her craft. And she really knocked this out of the park!
Заворожили.Спасибо!!!
tremendo!... Asombroso, poderoso!... Gracias, Shostakovich, Hann y Orquesta!!!

My thanks to those special people who provided all that background in the comments. Music is always still beautiful music but it is somehow helpful to know the context. I'm still grateful to Vasken Fermanian for finding and posting this marvelous video. Thank you all. 👍❤
What a piece of music! first time I hear it. extraordinary. and Mrs. Hahn is a top violinist. what a great performance.
A masterpiece performed by masters of all kinds. Breathtaking.
Totally love this woman's performances, she is an absolute star. I saw her once in Dundee, Scotland, a very majestic performance. Very fine orchestra also.

Maravillosa interpretación de la orquesta y Hilary Hahn, Gracias
Magnificent! Bravo! Hilary Hahn abolishes any doubt she is master of this most difficult Shostakovitch work.
I am breathless, speechless, in some state of incredulity at seeing and hearing this young violinist and this brilliantly gifted orchestra performing this most difficult work of music with such graceful comprehension. It is truly an exceptional and astonishing experience to see and hear what some can accomplish in their craft. It's like being visited by angels. Bravo!

One of the Best I've seen....
Youth and maturity of an artist are not the same and cannot be compared especially for Hilary Hahn. I love her performances but it is wonderful to see her when she was younger. She had something that she doesn't have today. She has something today that she did not have before. She is the most musically gifted of all time for violin. A perfect ear. A notch higher than Itzhak Perlman.

Itzhak Perlman is like piece of t and a clown in comparison to this girl. I don't like very much jewish versions (there are very few except like Kogan and Heifetz playing, but i mostly ignore all Perlman's versions that aren't virtuous romantic repertoire).
Octaves from the phrase 23:47 sounded like birds-- terrific tearjerker
Her talent is such a light but besides of that, what a beauty
Fabulous! Hilary Hahn will do down as one of the greatest violinists ever. This is a stunningly beautiful rendition of this difficult concerto.

Stunning performance and a favorite conductor too. Bravo!

It's amazing that they can touch our hearts
The Andante is just breathtaking
Also the coughing/throat clearing break between the first and second movements is hella funny lol, it's like everyone's body in the hall put itself into airplane mode and was finally allowed relief when the magic subsided for a moment. Kinda endearing, like stifling wind on a first date that's going really well 😅😅

Superb.She plays with spirit.
she makes playing of abstruse pieces as if it were from some Suzuki method, such a marvelous performance!
저 자리에 있었던 사람들은 얼마나 행복했을까
Bravo..!!Por Soshtacovich..!!
Lol i put this on while i was studying and my face literally went 🤨 cause hilary looks so young! Performed when she was 21, insane. She's aged just as well as her playing has
La maravillosa Hillary: la difícil perfección...
This is a diabolical, though queer and captivating composition, and I can never be ascertained that my ears like it. Despite personal taste, it remains a masterpiece; Shostakovich poured his soul, his voice, his consternation into this, and we can never underestimate the horrors he endured under Stalin’s reign… Young Hilary Hahn did so well, having memorized all of this and performed it with passion and vigor 👏
