This cello low notes sound like a powerful double bass. This is impressive. Also the horn player did a really good job, its not that usual to hear it played so well.
This is exactly how I want this concerto to be played. Wide, solid sound with tons of friction.
The music of Shostakouich speaks to the soul, gently, solemnly, , and sorrowfully
Capuçon is an exceptional cellist and I love his attention to articulation and precision. It's just always so clear in his phrasing where many just ram through those passages. Also, being quite of a short and light stature compared to some other top cellists, he needs that cut-through sound, his cello is formidable and set up for soloist action, I'm sure it can mellowed out for different purposes and sound a lot sweeter if needed.
Quel virtuosité, c'est magnifique, un immense merci à Gautier Capuçon. Que du Bonheur.
This and Elgar's have to be the most beautiful, powerful pieces ever written for cello

I love Dmitri's sense of rhythm, quirky sounds and somber yet sweet moods, played beautifully by Gautier & company. BRAVO!
I had the privilege of seeing Rostropovich play this on two separate occasions.
By far my favorite recording of this piece! I've been looking for a performance that was executed with such friction and force, the way I have been wanting to hear this piece, and I feel Capuçon has emulated that and more. Absolument spectaculaire!

How is this a major piece? Shouldn't it be C minor? I know I'm wrong but I'm struggling to understand how something as melancholy, isn't written in minor? Is avoiding the flat third that important ? - the internal dialog of a non-classically trained guitarist trying to catchup and understand.
@Spark-pv9js
Жыл бұрын
hi, thats actually a pretty valid question considering that we are often taught that major keys have to sound cheerful Since Shostakovich is a neoclassical composer of 20th century this concept wont really apply to him. Subjectively in his music, if a piece starts and ends on a note or chord (E-flat major), it can be considered Concerto in E-flat, even though everything in between is almost atonal. Take a listen to the start (0:49) and finish (6:59) of the first movement, and you will see that there is in fact a clean E-flat major chord. In short it has more to do with music theory than just feeling like a major key. Also, you can take a listen to Prokofiev's sonata no. 6 in A-major which is supposed to describe world war 2, similar story there
Whenever I’m practicing and my mom asks me to play something slow and melodic I always enjoy playing the last page :)
I wonder what the cellist's dynamic marking is at 2:11 ...? forte? It sounds like a hive of bees down on that C string...

To be fair, it's almost 500 years old at this point haha. It's been around a while, but it was made by a Luthier by the name of Matteo Gofriller, who is pretty famous for the quality of his cellos, which would explain why it sounds good still while being that old haha. It was not a memory slip, he went a little bit off with the tempo, so he had to adjust. It was a live concert after all. My concern is about the sound quality, it's his way and I'm sure he likes it, but sometimes he press a lot and some notes are so short and with so little bow that it's hard to recognize any sound at all. My teacher would say: "it seems that he is playing inside a telephone cabin". But of course, one has to be in the room to appreciate the whole thing. Imposible to know from a video. Open question: Who can understand what Gergiev is conducting with that shaky hand? 🤔

Rostropovitch le faisait beaucoup mieux. Ce n'est que mon humble avis. Valery Gergiev - the best.
Pretty good - sticking so close to the frog to conserve energy and keep your bow arm from fatiguing is cheating a little no? Hard to follow in Rostropovich’s gigantic footsteps, but one of the best performances of this piece for sure.

I completely agree. There are other approaches to this piece (Gabetta, anyone?) that employ those techniques, but don’t push too far into discord that the cellist does a disservice to the mixture of pleasure and dissonance integral to the intended sound
Don’t like the sound of his Goffriller - too rough - and not his staccato very near to the frog - too sharp. Prefer the performance of Johannes Moser and the HR Symphony with a furious final!

Honestly I rather dislike Mosers performance. The notes are just off in some sequences, and it feels like he put speed over accuracy. Also the horn player is in parts slowing down and playing the wrong notes, it's pretty irritating.
Мда... Тяжело, однако, бедному французику Шостакович даётся. Внешние части звучат отвратительно. Много интонационных оплошностей. Про тембр инструмента и говорить нечего - кряхтящее бревно. Крах, одним словом.
