Shorty 6.5 Creedmoor (16”)- Real world performance

Спорт

Often times you hear that a shorter barrel 6.5 creedmoor rifle will not be able to consistently shoot long range due to the reduced velocity from the shorter barrel. I decided to get myself a 16" 6.5 creedmoor barrel and hit the range to gather real world performance data. Join me as I document my experience pushing a 16" 6.5cm barrel out to and beyond 1000 yds!

I’d be interested to see what it looks like on the chrono after some more rounds down the tube. That said we really developed that 135 a tip for longer barrels. Thinkin we can get those numbers better with a short barrel optimized offering. Regardless fantastic shooting and great content as always.

The 135Atip is magic in my 65CM. 26” barrel pushing them around 2860. It seems to cheat the wind and stays supersonic to 1400+ Cool video

Great shooting. There aren’t many videos about 16” 6.5cm so I appreciate it. Just recently ordered a Howa 1500 16.25” 6.5cm with heavy bull barrel a couple of weeks ago and that thing is incredible fun to shoot. Planning on removing the original hogue stock and putting on a xlr elemental 4.0 chassis and make it my primary backpack rifle for hunting.

Your channel kicks ass bro, it has quickly become my favorite shooting channel on youtube. I recently gained access to a range where we can get out to 1350 yards. I see a big difference in bullet selection with my 6.5 CM at extended range. The 135 A-Tips are on my short list to try, so far I'm most impressed with Berger 140 Hybrid Target bullets. Regarding the Hornady A-Tip, I like that as a handloader, I can likely gain some speed by dropping down to the 135's. I'm currently around 2,800 FPS with a 24" barrel using RL16 with the Bergers. As you said consistent velocity is huge. I'm trying to keep my SD under 10 FPS, still a work in progress.

A friend of mine was trying to zero with the same Winchester ammo. The projectiles they use are pretty awesome. But upon looking at the ammo, you could physically see that the ogives were sat at different depths. The groups were well over an inch and a half. i gave him four factory Hornady140gr ELDMs and they went into the size of a nickle. Winchester is coming closer to making good ammo (using a good projectile) but they still have some work to do. Nice to see the pristene getting some love as well as finally seeing an outlier barrel. Thank you sir.

I actually had a 16 inch 6.5 creedmoor Howa barreled action from Brownells. The velocities I saw weren’t as low as I thought they’d be. With handloads I could get a 140gr up to about 2550-2600. I ended up taking the barrel off and using the action for something else but I’ve thought about building another shorty Creedmoor.

Great video man. I used a 21" .308 SAKO 75 with a BR Tuote reflex suppressor for several sniper instructor courses in Finland. Overall length of the rifle in a McMillan A4 was the same as yours. I had to unscrew the can to install or remove the TRG bipod. They had cut a TRG bipod receptacle into the front of the A4, which was cool. The overall rifle was actually really lightweight since it was a true featherweight barrel, but it maintain POI all day, day-after-day in defiance of all that I thought I knew.

I preferred my 18” 6.5CM barrel to my 16” because the longer gas system helped a lot with such a high pressure gassy round. I can get 2600 fps with a 140 eldm out of my 16” using staball 6.5. The ballistics are silly good for such a short barrel

I love your channel and am really glad that I subscribed to it. This was an interesting one. I have four 6.5 CM guns, two bolt guns and two LR308 platform guns. One of my LR308 guns is a 16” with a Faxon barrel. I built it with the idea that it [c]ould be a do ‘most’ rifle. I learned a lot from building and shooting that gun and I won’t build another one. I really like your gun, but for a precision rifle I don’t see any advantage to it. I think I will be sticking with my 24” gun. Thank for making the video I learned a lot.

Thank you for this video, I have been looking into a short 6.5 creedmoor and this convinced me. I would recommend a Burn Proof Gears suppressor cover. That would help with the mirage you're seeing

Standing out in a Dry wheat field shooting long Range with a Bullet too small, and a Barrel too short.........Liked & Subscribed... and your Microphone worked very well in the wind 😃

Very good presentation with some interesting results. The only additional thing I would have liked to have seen is the same shooting without the suppressor to see what the difference would be, if there is a difference at all.

I've been looking for a set up like that in 6.5 prc with a 24 inch barrel. Great job!

6.5 PRC with a 22" pipe is plenty. Great cartridge with shockingly-low recoil for what it does.

Love to hear you’re enjoying the content! A shorter barrel 6.5 is such an epic rig…. Handy and maneuverable while still being impressively capable at distance. This setup made me a believer!

Great video. Short barrel hunting rigs are the only way to go, even my PRS switch lugs are 20-22” barrels. I shoot the 110g Atip in my custom 6 CM 3050 fps. It flies good. I’ve connected at 1800. Single digit SD tuned load with 12-15 extreme spread. It also performs very well on game. Penetrates 6-8”, then explodes. No exit.

I’m impressed! I’ve been torn between a 16” .308 or a 16” 6.5, I run suppressed and like the options for 308 but this might have swayed in my favor!

Great shooting once again! Yes, Titanium cans get hotter faster. And they can be "sparky" under low light.
