Holy cow! This is EXACTLY what I want, but I can't find a stylist who understands! The last time I got a great, layered/feathered cut like this was more than 20 years ago! Yes, it's "outdated", but it is so ME, and now I can show my stylist niece (age 34) this video, hoping she will understand and learn to create this cut for me. I feel you. I've been trying to find someone to do this for years and no one understands me either. I show them pictures (of when I wore my hair like this in high school) and they still do it wrong.

I have been asking my stylists to do this for years and they just don't get it! I had this haircut in 1985 and I don't care if it is popular or not. I love it and I want it!

Incredible! Every instructor that's tried to teach me how to feather always used thinning shears or cut into the hair with scissors and it never looked like the feathers you made. Truly feathered hair! It gets requested more often than expected, mostly by older clients that miss their feathers.

They think you have to comb it the direction you want it to dry, but you dry it forward, like he did. Then comb it back after dry.

The good schools do teach this. Not all licenses are equal.

I had this exact cut in 1982 and I STILL love it! I also remember that I had my large comb in the back pocket of my Levi's, used "Gee, Your Hair Smells Terrific" shampoo and always had Bonne Bell Lip Smackers in my pocket. True, we called it "feathered" and sometimes I've heard stylists call it the "Gypsy", like Farrah Fawcett had in 1976-1980.

Thank you for sharing the so called ( feathered cut ) yes that was the cut in my day as a hairdresser. I still wear it that way . I can wear it in so many ways. @@amandabowman-dors-2941 I usually ask for lots of face-framing, graduated layers. It also helps to bring a photo so your stylist can get a good idea. Of course, it's all in the styling too. I also thought of more shampoos like: "LEMON UP, "FLEX" and "AGREE", do you remember those too? I haven't found anything close that smells as great as they did.

I am a product of the 60’s and 70’s and absolutely love this hair cut!! The only problem is I can’t ever find anyone who knows how to truly layer and feather hair, they think they do but they don’t. And I end up walking out disappointed once again. Really enjoyed the video

Beautiful...I got my first feathered haircut back in the late 70's. I wore it that way clear through the early 2000's. But then I found that when I tried to explain how I wanted it cut, it was like I was speaking a foreign language to the stylists. Either they wasn't sure how to do it or they tried to talk me into a "modern hairstyle" which really pissed me off. Over the past 20 years I have had such bad haircuts I just gave up on explaining what I wanted and said just make it easy to take care of. So I have had short hair ever since. I was pleasantly surprised when I came across this video. You are so right. With a good cut you can let it grow longer before the next one. I wish I knew where you were located. I would love to have you cut my hair someday. Watching this brought back such good memories of when I was proud of my hair.

I tried to tell the guy that I wanted it feathered but long 9n the sides. He told me it was impossible. I want this haircut but a longer version is all. I bet this Guy could make the impossible look like childs' play. I'm gonna fiddle around with it on my own. Can't go anywhere and it'll grow back by the time we're released. Wish me luck.

Totally agree! I really don't even enjoy getting my hair done much anymore. I am deciding to let my hair grow in silver and just concentrate on getting a good cut when it's a good length. I have middle of my back length hair brunette with a lot of silver growing in but as far as stylist knowing about these particular haircuts they have no idea and it's like you said speaking a foreign language to them.

And most likely they won't even though they say they know how. I'd imagine that's a very difficult aspect of the hairdressers job, at times trying to figure out exactly how the client wants it. We can all be hard to please when it comes to our hair.

Years ago, a stylist at a salon cut my hair in layers like this only it was much shorter. Afterward, she curled it to give it more body. It looked like a vintage Liz Taylor hairdo, and I absolutely adored it. I felt beautiful. The next time I returned to the salon, the woman who had cut my hair was gone, and I tried to explain to a young lady who worked there what that style had looked like, even showed her some photos. She didn't come close, didn't even layer it, and screamed at me when I told her it was not what I wanted. It was such a horrible experience that I haven't gone to a salon since. I'm going to try to do this to my own hair. I don't even care if I mess up as my hair grows super fast. Thank you for this video!

My hairstylist closed up during Covid well I'm sure he retired. I have been with him for nearly 40 years. It's so hard to find a stylist who cuts a good layered, feathered cut like this. I take a picture with me but still never looks like his haircut. Yours is very much like my cut that I want. Love the video.

An easy way to make sure you're pulling the hair at the right angle, for beginners, is sectioning the top, middle and bottom. Start with the bottom and work your way up remembering not to cut into the bottom length. Then section crossways to make sure of a nice clean feathered cut. You can wear this cut so many ways! Love it!!! 35 years here... ✌️😁

European hairdressers are usually very good, I haven't had a bad haircut there in more than 40 years. I came to Canada and had one bad cut after the other. In Europe you can't practice without a 3 1/2-yr apprenticeship, no salon would hire you.

I love this. I did similar haircut in the 70's and 80's. Of course I was taught on the 45* cutting not 90* which I wish I would have know back then. BEAUTIFUL ART. Again, like you said, this cut and a lot of other cuts depend on the client....my hair would NEVER do this as I have a shitty hair line. Thank you for this..I am 65 years young and can always learn.

This is how my hair was cut for years at a local salon but then I moved and sadly my haircuts haven't been the same. I have wavy fine shoulder length hair and my waves would spring up when air dried and looked amazing, plus the bounce in my hair was fantastic. Now I know exactly what to ask for. Thank you.

Very nicely explained indeed. This is a great look that won't ever go out of style altogether, esp. for people with thick heavy hair like myself. The blunt cut makes me look like I'm wearing a helmet on my head. Lots of layering works for me, love the feathered look which is a bit more complicated but will last a long time, as per The Salon Guy.

I'm fascinated by all the comments! With the amount of people loving and wanting this style, why would the schools not go back to teaching this style to its students? It's truly a beautiful, classy style that is easy to care for. What concerns me is there are far too many comments from people who are NOT satisfied with the cuts they're receiving from their current stylists. Even to the extent that the stylists are not being honest with their clients by telling them they can cut it the way they asked, but end up cutting it completely different. If there are this many women who are wanting this style back, it appears to me the stylists need to up their game and get back into training. Fully agree with you. Most beautician's today try to do 2-3 cuts/ colors at a time so time is money. Not all but most!!!!!

Your good! Honey where are you located? I can't find anyone worth a crap to just shape my hair right an if I do they don't cut it right. I've paid 70.00 an 25.00 . I've just about figured that I can save money an cut my on hair an mess it up and I don't have to spend all that money. Wish you were near me I would definitely have you do my hair. People just don't care anymore like they used to. I have unrulely curly hair. I don't like it curly so I blow it straight which is a chore cause I haven't mastered the straight iron. Thank god, I found this!! (and finally NOT A BOB!!!) That said, I absolutely love this style. I used to cut my own hair this way, in my teens (in the late 70's). It's soft, so easy to live with, classy and sporty, and great for thinner hair, as well as long. Thank you!! Problem is, I just can't explain it well enough to any stylist. I end up with a straight cut (cuz I said NO BOB!) with lame bangs and a straight-scissored downwards pull cut to frame the face. So frustrating.

This was exactly what I was looking for! I am tired of the bob and wanted layers but was afraid I would not find what I wanted. Enjoyed your explanations and banter too.

This was how I had the top and sides of my very long mullet in the 80’s and early 90’s. Thank you! You just gave me a wonderful flashback to the best days of my life.

The one thing about this kind of look (which is my go to look when I want to cut my hair short) it grows out beautifully. The layers stay in tact and all they do is trim the layers as it grows. It gives nice dimension to long hair. At least to me.

I'm old enough to remember feathered hair. I'm also old enough to remember David Cassidy. He had dreamy hair 😍. I always envied the girls ad and boys that could wear that style. Half of my class mates had feathered haircuts. My own hair won't feather because I have naturally curly hair. When I was younger I didn't know how to take care of it. By the time I was old enough to go to beauty school everyone wanted perms, and I got better at my own hair care. There were a lot of hair products in the 80s that worked...albeit they dried out my hair...at least for awhile curly hair was stylish. But as they say what is old, is new again.

I'm a professional stylist, we're longer on one side because we drop out elbow on the side that's less dominate. I've started remember to lift my elbow and my cuts have been so much more balanced. Beautiful hair cut! I've learned a thing or two from you! Thank you!

I’ve never had a haircut that wasn’t longer on one side. So sick of it! I cut my own hair now with the kitchen scissors. It doesn’t look great but it’s free, and it’s level.

Sir, you call it outdated, I call it versatile. There are so many styling options with this haircut. I would personalize it with height at the crown and a side part with a thin bang. You could also face frame wearing it forward. Or a Lisa Rinna look with the spiky flipped up ends. I love this cut and your teaching method!

I don't care if people say it's outdated or not, it's probably the most beautiful haircut you could ever have. The feathered look was the best look. The "Dorothy Hamill" look I always said, or the "Farrah Fawcett" do. Why do you know how to do this but many hairdressers do not ? You don't look that old, 🤷‍♀️🤔

I can work on men. Some men who wear their hair this way prefers it to be shorter in the top and sides and longer in the back. Hence, the "mullet". In beauty school in the 80s I was taught that this this type of haircut is called, a bi-level haircut.

I love it! Wish I could find someone to cut my hair like that!

I am a professional stylist for 30 yrs. I train a lot of apprentices. I ask them to watch your videos because you and I cut almost the exact same way. I call it my frame I almost always do it first all the way around and make sure I do an excellent job and if you are not spot on in the interior of the cut no one will even notice because you have that super well defined outer perimeter of the hair. So essentially I’m too lazy to make my own videos lo! You do a great job. I also often don’t get it right first shot when trying to match up the sides of the face on those cuts but I have learned over the yrs that I have my one side that I always tend to be longer on and I train my apprentices that they always have to check their cuts. Don’t assume they got the length or the angle right. Make sure!

This is exactly the way I like my hair cut. And yes, there are people who will do it this way. I'm 72, so I remember the old shag haircuts, but this feels quite modern, to me. It's what suits my hair, and a good one lasts for months.

My hair is cut like that except longer. I used to wear it like that in the late 70s, early 80s. I went back to it because I love it and I don’t really care what’s in style. I have an awesome older stylist from California who can do this beautifully. It’s fun when people stop and stare and say they are fascinated by your hair. Rock those 70s! ❤

I can't find anyone that knows how to feather layer and take weight out of my hair, not with the numerous hairdressers I've been too, mind you I haven't paid for a TOP STYLIST, like $500 or more, but I've paid $170 to over $200 including colour, even $90 for a cut

@@leeallen3202 Yes, they aren't taught proper skills like taking weight out and use thinning scissors which are not good. But I'm so over it, I'm just so unhappy all the time. And I have been to older hairdressers like the one I went to last week around my age being 56 and still not right, I paid $145 for half head of foils and cut, just dried off, and I've been crying, colour not great but cut is so unbalanced, which was to start with, I'm so, so, so over it, but when your hair is right you feel good, so I'm forever miserable about it, although of course learn to live with the shit cuts I get. sorry for the saga.

I like how you do it carefully. most of the stylist make it short cut with a thinning scisor and fly aways are all over specially if your hair is natural

Barry Gibbs wore a feathered cut most of his production years- I personally thought it was very sensual on a man. Begging to have fingers run through it. My hubby always kept his hair too short because of his type of work but he would have looked crazy good with feathered hair. Go for it,hun💁‍♀️😘😍❤️🤞🤞🤞

Oh my, I love this‼️ I so desperately want a feathered haircut and can’t seem to get anybody to understand what it even means and I don’t mind the mullet. I want the top middle short and feathered flowing into the long back, but seems like hairstylists just do whatever the heck they want with your hair and do not listen to your instructions. At this point I just cut my own hair, but still don’t know how to get the feathered look by myself . I will be saving this video for an example🥰 thank you so much for this...

Reminds me when I was 12yrs old every time for years this was the style my hairdresser did me. I love it so much I'm heading in for a cut this week.

I love the cut and I've been wearing that cut since the 80's and I can fix it at least 3 different ways and I have a hard time getting someone to cut it just right. Took me 2 years but I finally go a stylist who can do it.

Thank you for your video. I'm glad there's a stylist out there that has a clue about how to do feathered hair. I have thick, coarse, wavy hair and this is the only haircut that worked well for me. I wish there are other stylists that knows how to do this. I've been wearing my hair short for 20 years because today's hairstyles do not have a clue how to feather. I'm also glad that the layered and mullets are coming back. I could be wrong but I think that were u live in America has alot to do with the finding someone who knows how to do this. For example, the latest trends are always discovered in the Northeast of the United States and California then it slowly creeps into the Midwest than finally in the southeast and southwest of the country and that's why a lot if us can't find anyone who knows what they are doing. For the mean while, I'll just let my hair grow out then I will call alot of salons and see if there are stylist who knows how to this and when I do get lucky then I will let this stylist work their magic on me.

I had that cut for a few years, but a little more weight in the back and I had it all flowing forward except the top. It looked really modern and posh. I have a LOT of thin fine stick straight hair. And this cut really helped it have good movement and body. But my hair is super hard to cut for most stylists.

A year later since this vidio was made so greatful I found it. Going to do it on myself. Just like everyone said hairdresser just don't understand. I think me using a two way mirror taking my time it will work out. Thanks so much for the instructions. You're a great teacher.

I loved the feathered haircut and I have been looking for a style with the feathered look. I grew up in the 70s. Iam in my 60s this is very glamorous and easy to maintain. I will get it cut like this. Thanks for posting this tutorial.

NOT outdated. I had a hairdresser for ten years do this cut and I always had great hair. NOBODY knows how to do this now. I have had such awful cuts since. I have thick hair but with this cut it comes out light bouncy curly if I just scrunch blow dry it or use a round brush. I loved it. Its not like we can interview hairstylist because their training and every clients hair is different. Great video, thanks for making it. Now if I can only show it to the right person to cut my hair. Thanks Lynne :)

Gonna get my haircut just like this. Hope the stylist understands. Update- I got it the person who cut my hair tried her best and came pretty close to what this looks like Iam very happy

I see that everybody here has the same problem as me: stylists these days either don't know how to do a proper feathered look, or they won't, and will give you a modernised version. I have taken photos of people in the 70s to so many stylists, and when I finally found one who got it, she retired! Thank you so much for this!
