basically if you're mostly mowing with a little bit of loader work then the hydro is the pick, but if you're mostly plowing and ripping and dragging heavy loads then go for the direct gearbox with clutch .

I agree, especially with your thoughts at the end. I'm on 5 acres in KY and use my tractor pretty easy...basically as a powered wheelbarrow. I have hydro and have no regrets- I love it. For larger property, ground engaging, field type work, I think a power shuttle would make sense.

I fully agree with you I grew up driving gear tractors and I went with a 2610 koiti I mow a lot of grass do gravel work brush cut never had an issue shifting sure its slower but I have this tractor for 20 30 years

I follow you specifically because you have a Workmaster. And specific to this video, it's interesting that you're talking about the WM35 being plenty as a gear drive. I can confirm what you're saying. I have a gear drive WM35. I'm super happy with it.

As far as longevity is concerned, I have Kubota 2320 hydro with 1000 hours and no signs of any issues or concerns. Mostly mowing 6 acres with some loader work here and there.

I own both a gear and hydro. They both have there place. Loader work is better with hydro, plowing and really hard pulling work is better with gear. When I buy a tractor I always try to get the maximum HP for the frame size that I want. I've never once heard anyone complain that they have to much power. They both have there place that's for sure.

I find it’s the same for our farm size tractors, I like the cvx drive for yard work and gear drive for out in the field or hauling a big load.

Thanks for the great videos. Very informative. I'm getting a tractor and undecided between geared and Hydro. The fear peddled by H-proponents is that you will wear out the clutch and have to split the tractor to replace the clutch. Some say geared lasts longer, others say hydro lasts longer. If you use the clutch correctly it should hold up ok right?

I agree that it's personal preference. I have a hydro and I love it. I do use my tractor for Bush hogging for the majority of it hours so i do second guess my choice of a hydro. But I do have a cruise control on my JD 3039r so it works.

I went with the hydrostatic transmission on my Workmaster 25. I like it was delivered on Monday and I moved a ton of snow with it.

Gear drive pushes and pulls three times more.

I like both transmissions. I have used Ford 1920 and 2120 with gear drives and I now have a New Holland TC29D hydro. I will say that yes you do put more raw power to the ground with the gear drive transmission but going from forward to reverse and just general work around the yard the hydro is easier to use. I would disagree with you on the longevity of the gear drive. Because you can put more power to the ground the chance of breaking a gear is higher along with the fact that going forward to reverse requires a clutch application, you will eventually need to replace the clutch. A hydrostatic transmission allows the hydraulic fluid to be the weakest link with the oil going over relief essentially protecting the components from catastrophic damage.

yes but there some bearing inside to convert movement... so im not sure about hydro being better on longevity

@@YoxStudio the bearings inside a hydro very reliable. Can they fail, yes. That said, a manual transmission will be guaranteed to be apart because of clutch wear which is considered true wear item. This is if a tractor is used with a loader.

My John Deere is a 1984 , my dad bought it brand new , been mine the last 20 years , it is a hydro i pull a double moldboard plow , a box blade a disc harrow , 52” front blade for dirt gravel and snow, 200 foot driveway. And cut grass on my 1.5 acher property , move trees around etcetera .. it still looks brand new and operates like brand new. I change hydro fluid every 200 hrs and filter.. so i have to tell ya 38 years later that tractor has never not once been to the dealer or broke.. i have done nothing but fluid changes and filters… belts typical wear items and it gets used pretty hard.. so the worry of hydro not lasting is a non issue it properly maintained they will last forever..
