    The black thing is a float so when sucking up water it'll float when full and block the suction to prevent damage to the motor, not necessarily to block it incase it tips although that might be a secondary use.

    Helpful video. My Shop Vac instruction booklet mentions that there are two suggested ways to clean the filter - bang it against something or rinse it from the inside, out. I've seen a few videos that use an air compressor, like you also mentioned (I don't have one). Have you tried rinsing it? Does it take forever to dry? I mainly use it for my car but did vacuum a dirty boiler room floor. The filter definitely has dust on it but you can still see much of the white paper as well. What do you suggest?

  • @AroundTheHome1

    @AroundTheHome1

    @Andrea L. thanks for the question. I have not washed this one, but I have washed others similar to it. And yes, it does take a while to dry out right. Also, sometimes it's just not quite right after you wash it. The paper doesn't always get it's shape back all the way. My number one suggestion is to get a new paper pleated filter and a filter bag and use both. Then, my second suggestion is to invest into a decent compressor. It will come in handy all the time. I don't know if that is the answer that you were looking for, but I hope that it helped.

    Informative video thanks! I just got a craftsman shop vac to vacuum up wet dirt that is clogging up the French drain all around the basement of house I just moved into and also small puddles. It only came with the paper filter thing. Sounds like I need the foam sleeve for the puddles but what abt the dirt. Should I get the bag or just the foam sleeve is fine?? Sorry this is all new to me… TIA!

    When you have a situation like that I would suggest the foam sleeve with a filter over it. Like this one www.amazon.com/Shop-vac-9010700-Reusable-Filter-3-Count/dp/B00002N6RV?crid=2HOF3FYYYWZLD&dchild=1&keywords=shop+vac+filters&qid=1633552007&sprefix=shop+vac%2Caps%2C203&sr=8-7&linkCode=ll1&tag=greatwhitenin-20&linkId=9ecb962d1fef58457b22440d538d6401&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl At least that is what I would suggest for that specific situation.

    I’ve had 2 4 gallon vacs and they used a sheet of paper like material and a rubber ring to hold it around the cylinder. I figure many home owners have them too because they are the cheapest kind. I use the bags most of the time because my type of filter does a terrible job.

    That is what I do. I have two shop vacs and they both have a foam filter and a paper filter. However, one shop vac I use for dry pickup and the other one for mostly wet. The one I use for dry pickup has a paper bag as well. The paper filter in the one for wet pickup can be used wet or dry, because it was designed to repel water.

    Don't have to use the filter bags, but they are awesome. If you are sucking up finer dust like sawdust, drywall dust, ect they actually let you fill the vac up and still have suction. If you suck up finer dust, and only have the cartridge filter then it will clog up and you will loose a lot of suction.

    @Chad Jazeera, I might have been partially wrong. I have seen people use that sleeve over the cartridge filters to help keep them clean, but I was using my daughter's Hyper Tough little 1.5 gal vac and went to clean it out. It has no cartridge filter. It has a foam filter then that sleeve over it to filter out the dust. So I imagine that you can use it just fine that way if you like.

    I meant the filter is unaffected by water. The diverter on the tub of the shop vac where the hose goes in pushes the water away from the motor. The water is heavy so it drops down into the tub. Now some water vapor is still swirling around of course, along with lighter debris. The foam filter will stop the debris and help catch the water vapor.
