I had a KMC HL1 Wide half link on my EVIL DJ .. really smooth riding chain and it looked really cool, but snapped after 6 months .. I watched this video before buying a new chain, about a month ago.. I got the shadow supreme chain and it’s just super tough! I feel way more confident on my bike now! Thanx doods! 🤙🏻 much peace and respect from the Southern California desert ✌🏻🤘🏼

Overbuilding bikes back in the mid school era taught me I needed none of that overbiilt stuff. I wasn't easy on my bikes, but never as hard as the dudes that went way big. I run a combo of race parts on a street frame now, closing in on a 21 pound BTM and I love it. I'm old and ride smooth tho, and don't ride pegs anymore..

Dude is spot on. If your breaking chains you need to dial-in your setup. Your alignment is off, your sprocket is warped etc, something is off, it's not the chains fault. Full half-link chains are 2x as heavy 3x the cost and stretch easily..

Chais are plenty strong. They break more easily as they get worn-out . Because they don't fit in the teeth as well. I'm not sure if the chain pins are peened over like a derailleur chain, since the straight pin can open. Bringing up another problem is not getting the connecting pin in properly. That was the main problem with derailleur chains and the connecting pin that Shimano designed that got pushed through had tiny ribs that outer plate rested in and the guide portion was broken off at the end. Your BMX chains need this and they will break less frequently. Anyway you really should consider the chain disposable and replace it as it starts to become 0.75% worn . Your cogs and chain rings will last longer too. Once the chain gets past 0.75% it starts to wear the system exponentially and left to go past 1.0 you will be best to replace everything.

  • @paulsomero

The thickness of the chains doesn't indicate strength. The Z510HX is the only chain I've never broken. It has heat treated side plates and the pins are mushroomed, so it's crazy difficult to get the plates off even if you're using the big park press tool Do the modern half link chains still stretch worse/faster than the classic side plate style chains? Tried the OG half link chain (was it shadow, don't remember?) And it rode like crap because it stretched so bad.

I used to use the other chains, at the time I snapped it I was riding up a steep hill and in a hurry, I weighed only 185 at the time. when I switched to the shadow interlock I had no more issues, no more stretching, bending or breaking...Though to be fair, as the chains age after a couple years or so of daily abuse if your not cleaning it and lubing it properly eventually it's gonna break regardless.

What was that fat ass chain that needed the ACS fat claw? Wasn't that like 415? Could practically steal links from my motorcycle for it.

Probably a KMC 415. They were super popular in the beefy midschool days, right before shadow dropped the Interlock v1, which you can’t get anymore.

I have that cheap KMC chain and it is constantly breaking and has caused my sprocket to get chewed up. No I don't stunt my bmx at all but I ride a lot.

Either your front sprocket is not aligned or your chain is too tight. It should not be eating sprockets, even aluminum ones last me a few years.

If you bust a chain from peddling it ain't the chain, it's your wheel being pulled back too far causing your chain to be too tight. I was recently 250 lbs(I'm 215 now), never broke a chain from riding. I broke hundreds of chains when I was a kid and I was probably 150 to 160 lbs, all from grinding.
