Shop Organization - Part 2: Tool Storage

This video is the second video around Shop Organization focused on Tool Storage and how I have chosen to store my tools in a small shop. My goal is to help you think outside the box to make the most of your space, especially if you are in a small shop.

Most I had seen had always been individual, and granted it’s easier to move individual holders around than that massive thing, but the point is to rearrange individual tools, not holders. So this allows a lot of that. One piece of advice, use your miter saw to cut the grooves, not table saw. Too long of a board to use miter gauge, most miter saws have a depth stop. Made it really simple.

This brings back some memories! I ran my furniture making business out of a one car garage back in the late 80's and 90's. I had stuff mounted everywhere! I had a panel saw that took up an entire wall, and even had pegboard behind that! I built some massive furniture in there, but it was definitely a dance 😉The very first iteration was an unheated 2-car that I had to share with a car so I feel your pain. Everything on wheels and stowed away when not needed! I and finally getting my dream shop now, but it's been many years!

@@RingsWorkshop Could you do a tutorial video on how you actually designed and assembled some of the components for hand tool storage (starting at the 11 minute mark in this video)? On some, once the cleat is cut, you attached boards on top. And what is the spacing between your cleats? How did you know which tool holders would need to hit two cleats? I have everything purchased, but my cleats are not cut yet.

I'm busy setting up my small shop at home, in a small space in South Africa, initially as a hobbyist 'after hours' space where I can indulge in my passion, but the hope as I think many of us have is to permanently do what I love whether its woodworking, metalworking etc etc but working with our hands, stimulating our brains and doing something that gives us peace and joy! Your series of videos are by far the most helpful and structured that I've come across, and you offer great advice (through trial and error I'm sure 😂). Thanks for sharing your expertise some of your ideas in your Shop Organization vids have resulted in that 'the coin just dropped' moment for me and been a huge help! Also what you've learnt doesnt work is a huge help, crosses out all the Don'ts and explains the Do's so that I don't have to go through that, keep that up man! And magnets...I'm getting some asap

Outstanding comment !!! I'm in the process of doing something very similar, in central California. I love practical information and a practical approach to organizing and streamlining a work space, most commonly a garage. I love good ideas and what I call "actionable intelligence." What I mean by this, is that sometimes people make suggestions that are far too laborious, time consuming and EXPENSIVE !!! Actionable ideas are things that one can actually do in THIS lifetime, that really work, and that DON'T require a second mortgage to finance. Kudos to you and the author of this video !!!

I like the idea of the magnets for the hand tools. I think I'll be getting rid of a tool box and freeing up some space in the shop.

This has got to be THE most organized shop I have ever had the pleasure of seeing! You take it to a whole new level and helped give me some great ideas. It's also impressive to see that since your first video, posted five months ago, that you're already up to almost 14k subscribers (now including me). I checked out your blog on your site and would love more info about your Shop Dashboard...that thing is just sexy!! Thanks for the videos and I'm looking forward to seeing more! Tom

Thank you! Yeah I’d like to do more info about the dashboard at some point, I wish I would have recorded it, but since most of what makes it work is programming (which I’m not very good at but it works for me), I didn’t think I’d have much to show.

I love pegboard. Love it. Much smaller location unit, and fully flexible in two dimensions. You get more in a smaller space, so they are closed. Hand tools only! - but you can group by use, not size. For bigger stuff, you need ply (or OSB) walls. Putting a couple of screws in is fast, and you save all the time making cleats. Moving is simple, and you can locate them more accurately (not limited by cleat spacing). Totally agree with cubbies (moving divider shelves). Also consider duplication- I keep three sets of most popular drill sizes, one by the lathe, one by the drill press, and one by the hand drills. Saves a lot of walking and takes very little space.

Keep it up. I'm continuing to enjoy all of your videos and these in particular are very useful as my workshop is still in that newly finished "everything is everywhere" state. I had fallen into the trap of making lots of custom holders for lots of tools and then you showed me I was a moron and used the big bar magnets. I managed to get 8x 45cm (18") ones for about £23 that will more than suffice for most of my steely tools.

Love the shop ! Thank you for the vid, about to embark on a hobby metal workshop, late fathers Workshop, declutter and reorganise, as its become a little bit of a catch all of late. And trying to attack small projects at the moment is a bit of a frustration. Having spent most of my life in the Hospitality trade so stealing and living the magnetic Knife rack as the perfect tool holder! Thanks for all the inspiration. Happy working in your most organised Workshop..

Thank you! Only thing I’d be careful with is using the magnet holders for tools used with metal, the magnets will pick up all those shards and be a pain to get them off. Other than that I absolutely love them!
