Shop Hydraulic press, modification, making it rigid.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I box in the main frame to help make the press more rigid. I use a piece of 3/16 steel plate 7 inches by 64 inches and stitch weld it in. Hoping this will make it more rigid for pressing motorcycle crankshafts back together.

Good Afternoon Dale. I took your advice and picked up some equipment for my bike garage/shop. Got myself a smaller lathe with a boring and honing jig, a small plasma cutting table, a horizontal wheel lacing jig and vertical alignment jig and a pipe bender. Still have a little room left for a couple other pieces that I may need later on.

Oh boy, you are really going to start having fun now! Tools are always a great addition to the shop. Glad to hear your into your projects and buying tools to make the projects easier and so you have to send out less for outside work. Good job buddy.

Dale: I bought a Carolina CP400 at Sam's Club in Lewisville TX in the early 90's for around $500. It was heavier than yours with a hand-operated 2-stage pump on the right side. I drug it to Las Vegas with me then on to WA. Somewhere along the line the seals in the pump gave up and I bought a seal kit to fix it. The 5 o-rings were $99 as I recall. I checked back on seal kits and they went up to $150. I found a foot-operated 10,000 pound air operated pump with a reservoir for $110 delivered, Works great.

Nice story John, I have been dragging tools around for years during my 20 years plus in the Air Force. Once I got here, I put down roots and never moved again. These days it would be impossible. It's just insane what they get for parts these days, just prices in general are tuff to digest. I probably need the bigger setup like yours but going to continue to make this one better. If I can't get it done....it might be time for a Dake.

Dale put a dial indicator anywhere you think it might be flexing. Just a thought.

I think you are working along the right lines Dale. As I read it, the friction in the crankshaft does not yield before elastic deformation occurs in the frame of the press. The release occurs as the friction is overcome, which is uncontrollable. My press actually parallelograms under force. The upper beam isn't particularly rigid. I think the bolted construction doesn't help. Yours seemed more rigid when you moved it back so I think you have made some improvement. Best wishes, Dean.

Thanks Dean, I think you are indeed correct, it just seems the pressure builds up and then quickly releases then starts all over again. Can't wait to see if there is some improvement. Sounds like yours may be improved by welding the upper beam in conjunction with the bolts. Mine sure felt more rigid when moved back in position.

I hadn't even thought about that issue on my press. It also has that magical point of stress it reaches, then releases all at once with a big pop. I'm just removing or installing bearings usually, so it's so far not that big an issue, but making that mod would be easy to do!

I have always had this issue with mine. It's cool when your taking things apart and you get that big pow, and the earth shakes. But not when you're trying to be precise on the build. Sure hope this helps.

Really enjoying all your crankshaft stuff. I'm getting ready to start rebuilding them myslef. If you were to buy a new (or used) press what would you buy? I have about $1000 to spend.

Oh man I don't know; all I can suggest is to get the heaviest built one you can find. The one I have was fine for many years but was never like the one I had in the shop I worked at. Dake builds in my opinion the very best, but that said have the most expensive cost. I think 20 ton is enough for this work, but at this point now I have a 32 ton and still have some popping issues, pretty sure it's not the jack though.
