Shop built - Cutting board/serving tray

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Homemade Christmas are always a hit! In this weeks video i build a cutting board / serving tray for a Christmas gift. A wooden cutting board of this style could easily be used just for decoration or wall art. It was a super fun weekend project.

    Some commenters have expressed their concerns about boiled linseed oil as a cutting board finish, I personally feel completely safe using it based on my research and i love the look it gives the walnut. but feel free to use whatever you want (raw linseed oil, beeswax, mineral oil) Here is a link about boiled linseed oil as a food safe finish. www.woodcentral.com/articles/finishing/articles_497a.shtml

    Being a Product Design Engineer, I spent my entire working life designing everything in the CAD before they were ever built. However, now that I am retired, I find it a more rewarding and challenging process to 'wing it' in the shop just like you! I find that if I go slower, and think between steps about future actions, the projects come out great! This stop-and-think process allows for refinements along the way, and keeps my mind sharp!

    Fantastic project. Love the recovery from the mistake. Oiled finishes are the way to go for boards, in my view. My favourite for chopping boards are mineral oil with a small amount of lemon oil added.

    Good article on the safety of finishes. My concern is the FDA as they cannot be trusted imho. It sounds as if the manufacturers can run free as few are doing any testing to gain FDA approvals. I will do my own digging now as you have tweaked my interest.

    Man i feel like you took the words out of my mouth about the whole gifting thing. I been stressing for weeks thinking of something to make and always struggle to come up with something. You are right, anything hand made will be greatly appriciated and more memorable than anything you buy. Hearing you say it then make an awesome and unique gift made me feel better. Quick question, this is great for adults but what about kids? What do you make for kids around 8-13 and still feel like you aren't the cheap uncle that gave them a piece of wood for Xmas? lol

    Nice project. Funny, I was just in my basement doing a video on making a wine glass/bottle holder and was wondering if I should just wing it, or draw something up. I have AutoCAD, and I created the template, but I wonder if just free handing would have been better. I should be posting it in a few days. I basically stole from "Make Something, but I used different woods. These will be xmas gifts for relatives, and since none of them know I have a KZread channel, they likely won't see it before they get them. (I intentionally avoid advertising to family, as I really get sort of creeped out knowing they are watching me doing my hobby) Keep the vids coming!

  • @JessCretney

    @JessCretney

    I have a ways to to go before 20k subs, so I should be safe for quite some time :). When I started my KZread channel, I did not give it much thought and I went and used my full name for my channel name. That was not so smart, and I have considered changing it but then I would have to start all over again. I am truly doing my KZread channel for the enjoyment of sharing, so while it is time consuming and you get to see some "strange" posts on your work, it still is worth it to myself. Keep on making and I will keep on watching!

    You should use pure mineral oil...BLO is not actually boiled, despite its name. Instead, it is pure linseed oil that has drying agents (either petroleum-based or heavy metals) added to it to accelerate the curing/drying process. The addition of the dryers makes the product unsafe for consumption and not a food-safe finish.
