Seeing the look on your offspring's face when his cool dad fixes something is indeed priceless. Out of your earshot probably he'll be saying to his mates "Yeah... my Dad did this." Take care and be well. Greetings from Glasgow.
Hello James....enjoyed and thanks for the shout out...lol, I will have to get you an autographed photo from one of the scale-holders or maybe time to start filming again...ATB

the last few updates been great to see ya :)
Awesome video thanks and please keep them coming
Love Hilger Watts instruments they are works of art in their own way. such nicely made. Good find Mr K
I worked for AMF at one time. Inspecting oilfield pipe, sucker rods, etc. Since I just received a bunch of horizontal milling cutters, thanks for showing how they are used. ; ) Cheers, Gary
My tried and proven true many times for replacing any item. If you buy a spare then by the time you need it you will not be able to find the spare or so much time goes by that dementia bars you from knowing you had a spare. So you then order another "whatever" and a spare and guess what? You find you now have 2 spares and will lose them both. However, there is rule #2. If you have a spare, know where it is at then the one you are using will never fail again.
When it comes right down to it, family is what it's all about...period.
Gratuitous horizontal cutting ... I love it!
That gunge on the base looks like dried up packing tape that has lost the tape.
Enjoyed God bless ... stay safe
Liked the eBay find, hope you haven't forgotten me on those small taps anyway nice to see you in good health. Thanks

The ferric carbide in "white" iron, AKA "chill", is nasty stuff. As Mr. Kilroy showed, tungsten carbide tooling can barely cope with its hardness. My guess is that a CBN cutter will be just fine, but even that rates to dull faster than normal. Historically, "white" iron was ground, not machined. "White" iron is far too hard for the capability of any steel cutter, including the best HSS.
James. Love it, would you mind a current shop tour?

When I can bring some help back into the shop unfortunately.
Hi James, I love the quality of Hilger and Watts instruments, I have a small collection which is growing when my husband doesn't notice. I have the same inclinometer model you have. I think the flexture fixture on the base is not original. The original company was Watts who made instruments in there own right as was Adam Hilger's company. Later they merged with HIlger, early ones will be labeled just Watts on the instrument (like yours) later ones post merger will be labeled Hilger and Watt's. Even latter the merged company was taken over by the Arthur Rank organisation who also included Taylor Hobson, an excellent producer of optics. The well known (well at least in Europe) autocollimators and alignment telescopes are of course from the same group. Regards Sarah

Great information, you are obviously knowledgeable in the subject area. Do you have a pic of an unmolested version you could share?

Wood would have been fine, but I like to keep the 3d printer busy.
Big slab of 4140! Looks like you started climb milling but changed your mind? You need other people to do big work in the shop??? Going to check the nut size now!

Can't get my hoist moved around right now, so most lifting is done using the strong-back method.
