Shooting the H&K MP7

/ forgottenweapons
Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
Thanks to H&K and Trijicon, I have a chance to do some shooting with an MP7A1 PWD today. The MP7 is unusual for a gun of its size and configuration in having a fully locked operating system; essentially a G36 scaled down to 4.6x30mm. This allows the gun to be lighter, as the action is not dependent on bolt mass to delay the breech from opening.
I was expecting the MP7 to be extremely soft shooting, and was rather surprised to find it with more pronounced recoil than I expected.

It actually would be totally possible to finagle a compact grenade launcher onto there. The foregrip would have to be removed. And that's the real-world version I'm talking about. Some modders have actually improved the in-view weapon model in Half-Life 2 by giving it a visible grenade launcher. Personally, I think S.T.A.L.K.E.R. had the right idea about how to handle grenade launchers in terms of control scheme. If you bind a key to toggle between the launcher and its host weapon, you can then have two different sighting systems. Of course, that only applies to FPS games that have ADS.

Also the rollers can wear down in the magazines. Only people who have issues are mg rentals because they do 10k+ rounds a year. I have around 6k though mine in 2 years, and have put over a thousand rounds in a day though it on two occasions. Never had a single failure. It goes ~2k rounds better cleanings.

@@ionstorm66 Yeah, I'm with you. My PS90 runs a Dan Haga forend and cheek riser, best two additions money can buy. Zero reliability issues in 2000 rds. Light, fast, and low recoil. Remarkably accurate, even with rudimentary irons, amazingly so with a red dot. Compact, much more so than an MP7, also ammo is broadly varied and easily sourceable. Get the upgraded trigger and it shoots as good as any other rifle, better than all other bullpups I've tried. Throw on a light and a shorty grip out front, along with the larger charging handle. Now you have the modern M1 Carbine. Pricey? Maybe, but for what you get, the whole package is still much smaller, lighter, and handier than an AR platform by far. Maybe not apples and apples, but look how much use the M1 got? I'd say it's a very viable compact weapon system, equivalent to the best sub gun platforms available. Two mags equals 100 rds. Consider that amount of firepower in such a relatively small package, especially if you have to use your hands for other things. Pair that with a FiveseveN pistol, and you have a remarkably good deal of capability pound for pound. There's a lot dumber ways to spend two grand. Food for thought...

I know very little of firearm technology but as far as I understand, the rechambering of rounds in this weapon is executed by the escaping gas of the ammunition. So would a slightly higher load of a cartridge cause the handle to extend further back than normal maybe?

"That does not recoil like a .17 rimless at all" - Yes Ian, because it has the energy of a .45 ACP Federal Hydra-shok bullet. ;) 540J for the 4.6x30 Black tip vs 559J for the .45 ACP. As you said it was designed to counter Russian bodyarmor. The specification for the 4.6x30 is penetrating 1.6mm titanium (Ti318 alloy) and 20 layers of cevlar at 200 meters.

Bullet recoil impulse is not an energy equation equation, though. It's simply momentum. So while HMR is a lot weaker with half the bullet weight, 45 ACP at the same energy (nevermind that modern loadings have more) has far more recoil than 4.6. This ignores muzzle blast and bolt impulse, of course.

  • @johndavidwolf4239

    1) Bullet Energy is proportional to mass (weight) times velocity squared. 2) Felt recoil (on shoulder) is a function of bullet energy and mass of the gun, assuming a non-sprung stock.
