Shooting SUBMACHINE GUN Rounds in a BOLT ACTION Rifle

Спорт

This is a remarkably cool carbine and it is much more modern than the more classically stocked rifles I usually prefer. You'll like this Anschutz 1771 in 4.6x30 which is the same PDW round that the H&K MP7 is chambered for. PDW submachine gun rounds being fired in a bolt action rifle is not something you see everyday. Enjoy and thanks for watching! Check out the links below.

I have never seen a rifle like that. It truly is beautiful. I bet the actual woodwork is gorgeous as well. I've not heard of the 4.6 x 30 before. But to be honest, I have not been looking for another caliber to load for. I load for everything I shoot, except my 16 gauge shotgun. I just do not shoot it enough to make it cost effective to hand load it. Thank you for sharing such a beautiful alternative styled rifle. And for informing us that such a cute little cartridge even exists.

Amen. So refreshing in a sea of ill informed and ill-mannered presenters. T'would be an honor and pleasure indeed to make your personal acquaintance as you are a true gentleman, Mike, and I would add altogether too humble in proclaiming your inadequacy to the task you have so generously taken upon yourself. I think I have learned more of value from your offerings than any of the dozen or so other serious firearms channels that I follow, good though they may be for certain purposes. Thank you sir. I too have to say that the 7x57 is my favorite all around center fire rifle caliber. The only detractors for it now a days is the lack of factory loaded ammunition and components for reloading. I don't hunt and shoot as much as I used to for other reasons but it is still frustrating to not be able to get ammo and components. And who doesn't want a sub caliber submachine round in a precision bolt action rifle. I've always admired the "miniature" bolt action rifles just for the novelty if nothing else. I'm thinking that the skeleton butt stock helps to balance the carbine and keep the muzzle heavy feel of a rifle. Apologies for the rambling. Great episode.

I really liked the idea of the 4.6x30 in a bolt action as a varmint round. Paticuarly the 17 Wildcat version, 17 VHA. Close to 17 Fireball velocities in a far more efficient package - less powder, smaller case etc. Also easier to reload for than the 5.7 counterpart.

Every rifleman should have at least one Anschutz in their armory. At the tender age of 15, during a small bore 3-position rifle match, I fell madly in lust with an Anschutz. A fellow competitor let me try his. There's just something about precision engineering, blued steel, checkered walnut, and the heady aroma of gun leather and Hoppe's. Nr. 9 on a fine rifle...I was never the same.

Most interesting cartridge as is the Anschutz rifle and stock too. Another reason why I watched intently was the fact that I am thinking of buying a GRS stock for my Tikka T1x rifle, and with it's sorter barrel ( 406mm / 18 inch ) I was wondering how it would look on a 'regular length' stock; looks just fine to me. As a further note, I am not a hunter but merely a target shooter for my own enjoyment. ( even though some in Ottawa seem to think that ALL gun owners have other ideas ) I did also look up the 1700 series Anschutz rifles that are available as well, as I am also contemplating buying a more accurate rifle. Thank you once again Mike for a most enjoyable video and commentary.

@@ronsindric4241 I have a few Boyd's stocks on different rifles, and the At One is on my Savage Mark II, but what rifle is attached to that particular stock is not important. It's just that I would rather have a stock that is 'crafted' like the GRS stocks seem to be, and made ( so it seems ) for the shooter's hand and shoulder which enables better accuracy. I say this as it's my opinion. Time will tell.

Interesting firearm! I'm both an Anschütz & Nordic Marksman fan having acquired a model 1416 in .22 some years ago. They're one of the few official distributors for Anschütz in Canada & great supporters of Biathlon Canada. I 1st became aware of Anschütz when I purchased a vintage .22 youth rifle at a local gun show. That got me researching more about the brand & coincidentally a backcountry ski guide & mountaineer that I know is/was a Biathlete & pointed me towards Nordic Marksman as a source. With regard to that thumbhole stock, it's not only a work of art but also ergonomically right on point. Ergonomics in Biathlon is huge & Anschütz is one of the most successful firearms in the sport. I'm sure that experience has a lot to do with the thumbholes they offer for other firearms. Having purchased my 1416 with a conventional stock I kept admiring the thumbholes & finally ordered one. I also fitted a bipod to the rig & wow, what a pleasure to shoot off the bench at the local range. Probably not the best for carrying as a hunting .22 as it's on the heavy side.

Hi, I'm a Belgian hunter and sportshooter and in my country when something bad happens with a gun (which is most of the time an illegal gun), they immediately target all hunters & sportshooters. Yet there's so much red tape for us and with every little thing our licenses get withdrawn. Unfortunately missinformation of the people leads to gunfobia, and apparently not only in Belgium but also in Canada where hunting was quite mainstream. We really need people like you to step up and defend our rights. If you should ever decide to take on politics, I'm sure you'd make a lot of votes.

Zinngeschoß means tin bullet. The lead core is substituted with a tin core, since lead is more and more banned in Germany.

Thank you. I never expected to see a 4.6x30 bolt action being shot on KZread although I had seen the option in an Anschuetz hunting catalogue. The way that you are able to hold that rifle reminds me of the Steyr AUG, a rifle that unfortunately renders main spring unserviceable at a ludicrous rate and has 50mm @100m sight adjustments! The 1771 appears to be a very nice piece of kit. I know what you mean about trigger pull. I used to have a CZ 527 in .223 and one day, with a cold wind coming from the side, I tried the set trigger on our club sight-in range. It went off as soon as I touched it, thereby confirming my prior decision never to use the set trigger in cold conditions. The unset trigger pull was perfectly adequate for close standing shots at game but too heavy for deliberate practice with such a light rifle at 75 to 100 metres.

Thanks Michael - and fine point about the cold. I hope people think twice or a few times about lightening and tinkering with triggers; I find that it is better to get used to any/all triggers than to try to make all triggers seem the same. IMHO. I like the 4.6 more and more. The velocity gains in the longer barrel are substantial. Those tiny bullets slip through a lot more than one thinks. I now understand why the Germans wanted minimal frontal area and high velocity - the mesh of body armor is not compressed by the frontal area of the bullet. Very interesting.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns Makes sense. I gather that the whole concept was to create an M1 carbine type rifle for: drivers, mechanics, HQ and Q staff, etc, as opposed to pistols and submachine guns that tend to cause accidents and soak up disproportionate training resources in military service. Primary adopters of the 4.6x30 and 5.7x28 appear to have been bodyguards and people who like exotic range toys. Another example, I suspect, of (military) politicians failing to appreciate that the proposed option is cheaper and safer than giving 10-12 pound toys (by the time you include rails, grips, battery powered sights, bayonets, magazines and spare packets of ammo) to people who might do 3 days of Infantry Minor Tactics (IMT) in a five year period. So, the cheaper, safer option gets canned and too many soldiers are lumbered with essentially useless pistols or heavily kitted out rifles that constantly get in their way. One of those small carbines can easily be slung across a soldier’s back without digging in OR catching on every bush. It also negates the need to send service arm NCOs off to do machine gun courses and keep them current. Too obvious and too sensible.

Cleaning that tight of a bore is a task. Even .22s are almost to small for ease of scrubbing etc. Super fast light needle rounds are ok I guess if you hunt varmints. Having more fun with sub sonic .30 cal stuff. Lob a biggie instead of zip a teenie. Now anything in 22 Hornet would get my attention for some reason. I digress. Thanks for the look.

Very good Daniel - I agree - they make the same rifle in .300 Blackout - far easier to own and clean - and I like those 220 grain subsonic rounds. Still, the 4.6 is electric to own and shoot. I glued a bunch of electric cover plates together and the tiny bullet made it through 8 plates at 50 yards - not bad. All the best to you.

I looked up the 4.6x30 online, and it gave velocities of 2000 to 2400 fps with the various bullet weights, something similar to a 22 magnum, or just a bit more.

Hello Fed Up - Thanks for sending. I had a P90 for a time and the 5.7 is interesting as well. Most people view the 5.7 as the superior cartridge. The short barrels of the P90 and the MP7 in 4.6 x 30 seem underpowered for sure. I shot some electrical cover plates epoxied together and I guess the bolt rifle barrel makes a difference. Surprising penetration - quite impressive actually. Maybe the German's knew what's what after all. All the best.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns I wasn't complaining about the cartridge, I was just reporting what I had found about the cartridge. The 22 LR can produce some pretty good penetration itself, and I am sure the 22 magnum can do so also, depending on the bullet used. From what I read, the 4.6x30 uses a purpose built bullet for penetration. I personally think that the 22 mag is a pretty effective round itself, I'm sure the 4.6x30 will deliver what it was designed to do.

Another excellent video! Lovely little carbine, from a great Canadian supplier of superior firearms. As for the 7x57 and cartridges like the 6.5 CM, they may not be "V8's" like the 300 WM or 7mm Rem Mag, but they sure are easier to shoot well. The bottom line is being able to hit what you're aiming at. Lighter recoil and reduced muzzle blast helps to make the shooting experience more pleasant. This cartridge is fascinating. Is there any connection (in terms of design) with the 7x33 Sako?

My personal preference is for the 5.7. Every gun I shoot has to be reloadable and it's 224 dia. appeals to me for that reason. The reason they generally advise against reloading the 5.7 is that the available carbines are blowback and bad things can happen if the pressure curve is a little long or if chamber pressures exceed factory specks. The 5.7 holds about a grain less powder than the .22 hornet and in proper locked breach actions it would be closer to the .22 Hornet than the .22 rimfire magnum. The problem is finding a suitable action for its length. The 5.7 has much better brass than the .22 Hornet so it makes it a better choice than the .22 hornet. That said you have an elegant and flawless example of the gunmakers art. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you - sound and informed comment. The 4.6 does offer one special thing - with the non softpoint factory bullet it penetrates even steel in an astonishing way. I didn't have a way to show on the channel - maybe soon. All the best to you.
