well, i made this one for 20$. There is no reason other than trend that makes the rollers so expensive.

no lol, they were the cheapest around.

I made a similar speargun but I used teak because it’s way easier than coats of epoxy. I have a ton of cedar though, I’ll have to give it a try.

Yeah, I normally go towards iroko but good luck finding dried iroko that will not twist all to hell. Also I use epoxy on all guns because I literally destroy them by diving five days a week, on guns I rarely use, I'll lean towards oil.

@@wafflebeaver I dove a lot in Rhode Island before the pandemic. I competed in that region for about 20 years. Last four winters I spent in Baja.

i use "0840UU" rollers (8x40x20.7mm) which you can find everywhere online which comes with a 8mm hole which means you can just use a stainless steel screw/nut to attach it. it does however use ball bearing. as for improvements to your gun in my opinion the rubber should never be loose it defeats the purpose of a roller gun you are supposed to attach it on the bottom then it always stays there with tension. at the end of the rubber you are supposed to have 2 strings. 1 that gets stuck on the metal distances preventing it to hit the shaft and 1 longer that you can easily grab with your hand while the rubber is under tension to load the speargun (if you search for roller guns you will notice most have 2 threads on the end for this purpose). It does however come with a hug security concern if done wrong since the thread could throw the spear backwards. otherwise nice looking gun

It seems that no one understands the two stage loading... the elastic is stretched at 50% umder the gun. Much much much morr than normal rollers. I have tried four different rollers, one with ball bearings. I find that larger weels work best (simple physics)

The rollers you mention, I searched for them, but all the ones I found appear to have a metal bearing(skateboard type) that would rust out in a second. Were you able to find any of the rollers seen here? I've searched all over for clothes line roller tensioners no luck.

@@DarenFentiman Look for stainless steel (all bearings are however made with high chromium steel) which means that they are corrosion resistant. Just pour some tap water when you get to land and the salt will wash off. Just like the spear and flopper.

@@DarenFentiman I made a 120 cm version of the cedar roller with 16 mm bands. It works better with 14 mm. I had some problems with the bottom holding pins, it's back in the shop. It shot great, but I really prefer a traditionnal 2 band speargun.
