This is so cool! Your opening remarks did immediately raise the question of when you’ll buy an ARRI Super 35, but you kind of answered that later. I shot a little 8mm film using my Dad’s Minolta as a junior high school boy, but I didn’t have the film chops you do, and I quickly reverted back to making 35mm stills. Totally agree about the learning experience from real film for serious aspiring film makers, but, damn… Dolby Vision 10-bit HDR on an iPhone… LOL seriously, I love the huge span of different topics covered in your You Tube videos over time. 🙏

Iv shot a few rolls threw my Bolex H16 and ran it threw Bell and Howell projector and it’s almost like HD in a analog kinda way, It looks way better then any scan. Side note tho consider with the bolex is they do have a much higher standard of build quality, but you can close down the shutter this making a faster shutter speed and a sharper image

Jesus Christ, the russians are essentially committing genocide of the Ukrainian people, and all you guys are worried about are the prices. Also, from what I could tell, this Max guy is russian and still lives there, so way to go supporting the barbarian war. I know Brae mentioned this guy is an important part of the 16mm film community, but there are more important things than that. You know, like human lives, doing what's just and being on the right side of history. This guy pays taxes and supports the economy that sponsor the war, so I'd urge you to get your K3 somewhere else. Part of the reason why there's a war in the first place is this kind of indifference towards the heinous in favor of selfish gains and avarice

  • @BraeHunziker

@@fromanggio You understand that the actions of a leader or group of leaders of a nation does not reflect the ideals, morals, and ethics of the nation as a whole, correct? There are plenty of Russian citizens who whole-heartedly disagree with everything going on right now, as they should. Now, these citizens suddenly don't deserve to support themselves and their families? Good, honest people suddenly deserve to be isolated and outcasted from society? Max is a normal, hard-working guy, trying to make a living utilizing a unique skillset that he has, and just because he happens to live in a country where the president has decided to make a terrible decision, you think he should reap the consequences?

  • @fromanggio

    @fromanggio

    Жыл бұрын

@@BraeHunziker I understand what you're saying but an important point to realize is that this isn't a single man's war. It's not the leader carrying out all these horrifying crimes, it's the people. While you may argue that the actual soldiers comprise a small percentage of the russian population, you cannot ignore the stance of the russian society at large. Sources vary, but one of the latest surveys done by the only independent pollster in russia shows that nearly 80% of the population support the w*r, an increase from the survey conducted in April. Source: www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/ukrainealert/more-than-three-quarters-of-russians-still-support-putins-ukraine-war/ And while I was trying to figure out if Max is russian or not (because you kept it super vague in the video), I saw that some of his buddies served in the army not so long ago, already after the annex of Crimea and w*r in Donbas. I do realize that military service is compulsory there, but what do you think the person is likely to be leaning towards after having been for a year in a highly antiquated institution prone to brainwashing and 'setting people straight'? We can argue all day about the ethics and morality of the world shunning all russians, and there's probably no right answer. I've made up my mind about it, however. This war is as black and white as it gets. If you're part of the state and nation responsible for it, then inaction is complicity. The sad truth is that the percentage of people there actually doing something to make a change is so minuscule that it can be written off as accounting error. Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate the people who are putting themselves out there to make things right. But unfortunately, looking at this from a bird's eye view, it's evident that at least this generation of russains is lost. It just is. Bottom line: whether Max is a saint or not, him simply living in russia contributes to the pointless de*ths of countless Ukrainians. Even if he's evading taxes, he still spends money in the country, supporting the economy and ultimately financing the w*r. Do you really wanna be part of that? I understand where you're coming from, I truly do. But it's not the time to deal with greys. Everyone needs to take a firm stance against russia as the aggressor and russians as the people who ultimately let this happen because after all, a leader without a following is just a man. Going back to the poll I shared, after all that's happened, most of russians still think they're in the right. So maybe, just maybe, complete isolation from civil society will finally get some gears turning. P.S. I appreciate your willingness to have a discussion on this matter. Had to censor out all sensitive words so that KZread actually keeps my comment up

@@fromanggio I gave up attempting to converse with people over the internet about subjects like this because it leads nowhere. So, this will be the last I say on the matter. I disagree with you. I've talked with Max about the issue, he has expressed how displeased he is with what is happening. He is an honest, hard-working man who has every right to make a living and support himself and his family. Just like I do, just like you do, and just like any decent human should. I do not believe outcasting and shunning innocent people who have no control over a very broad situation is the answer.

I don't know if things have changed with Pro8mm but I used them for one project. Never again. There was less film on the rolls than advertised, the chemistry on the developer seemed off, the scan had a blue cast to it. Everything about them suggested corner-cutting but they certainly weren't passing the savings onto the customer. I've used numerous other processing & scan labs with better results and often times lower price. I did buy film from them one other time but that's because I NEEDED 7212 in Super-8 and that was the only place to get it. I didn't have them scan it though.

Thank you very much for your videos (the division of Kodak sensitivities is very clarifying) (I bought a K-3 many years ago just for the Meteor lens. The "thread" is a Russian bayonet and my experiment with digital cameras and fusing the meteor with the back of a Jupiter 1 didn't go very well... ) I can't find an answer about the camera. If you can not change the position of the lens. What happens with a super 16mm window in the negative? Is only the vignetting from the Meteor lens exposed? I don't have Instagram, but again, thank you very much!

Question: I'm wanting to use a 16mm camera, say the K3 for some 2D animation. would a +1, +2 etc. macro lens filter work on the native lens to bring down the minimal focus distance to say fill in an area the size of an A4 sheet of paper, or would it just curve the image at the edges or some other crap? Or would a better camera be a bolex with an animation motor, Eumig, revere, beaulieu, Scoopic or whatever?

Do you have any video regarding framing and results for super 16

Awesome video! Yes, a modern lens mount solves the old problem with the K-3: no decent wide angle lenses, other than fisheyes. It's still a challenge, but one can produce pro level looking films with this camera. Roughly USD 3k for the camera and glass is still a very good price compared to the alternatives and you have your light path between the lens and the film 100% clear.

Once you get into the EXR and original Vision era, one stop open per decade does not work as well since the film stock is improved, esp. since 1983/84 and that includes Agfa and Fuji 16mm color. Maybe 1.5 stops open instead, though you have to push and take more control Vision more than Vision2 or Vision3 to get best results. Thanks for the video!

Hey Brae this is such a great video, thank you for making it! I'm talking with Max right now for a K3 Ultra 16 with the canon mount. I typically shoot Sony E prime lenses and have a 15mm 1.4 prime that I think would work for this K3. I have an EF to E adapter for it but my question is do you think that'd be a good idea to use that lens with the K3 or do you suggest getting an EF 10mm for this camera. Just trying to save costs and not buy a ton of new lenses for it but use the gear I already have! Any help would be great, thanks man!

Maybe even try the pentax wide angles? pentax made great stuff for m42 mount. edit: nvm i forgot K3 was m42 initially anyways. my bad. maybe just get a c/y to EF adapter and use some zeiss glass instead. might also be good.

I've had expensive ARRIs and AATONs. Honestly, i can't see any differences between the Bolex and the über expensive 16mm cameras. Switar lenses are as good as it ever gets. They cannot be beaten, irrespective of the price. I have, many years ago, had a Krag, but the chatter and weave and gate register was noticeably worse than the Bolex. If you can afford it, buy a Bolex. An early non-reflex H16 with the modest Switar AR lenses will give superlative results, PROVIDED you use a top grade tripod, fresh film and nail the exposure. (The Bolex accessory shoe mounted exposure meter, (CDS type) when calibrated will give perfectly good results - you don't need to spend any more. Again, i stress the vital importance of the tripod. A cheap camera on a top grade tripod generally gives better results than an expensive camera on a POS tripod. Well exposed film (100asa) can be duped onto 35mm or scanned to 4K and most people will be very impressed. If you over expose or over develop the film, the grain will be the size of lumps of coal. TRI-X at 400 really can only be scanned to 1080p - more than that just exaggerates the imperfections.

After spending time with my Bolex H16 non-reflex I really don't understand the aversion non-reflex. Sure it is an extra step to line up your shot, but it doesn't long to get used too. Plus, every old camera bought used will need to be refurbished no matter what, so spending $3k instead of $500 is baffling.

Super 8 film stock is not cheaper. 8mmx50ft is 4 times less Material than 16mmx100ft (half length half width) but super 8 is about 35€ while 16mm is about 55€ (kodak vision3) so s8 is 25% of film but 63% of the price of 16mm. If you would divide the 16mm price by 4 it would be 13,75 or if you would take 4 times the price of s8 it would be 140€. So super 8 is 2.52 times more expensive than 16mm film stock.

The part where you said it would be cheaper shooting digitally for bigger productions...WELLLL....look, aside from audio drifting (which can still be fixed in Post using Fairelight or Pro Tools or even Audacity), shooting 16mm might STILL come out for about the price or even cheaper than, say, investing in like a Panasonic S1H or a Sony A7 IV or something. Let's face it, KZread has hundreds of thousands of videos with people talking about the newest and best gear. "If your a professional Videographer, then you definitely need something that shoots 4K 10 Bit Internal RAW and then you need an extra $500 to $1,000 dollar field monitor like the Blackmagic 7 inch Video assist or Atomos Ninja V, that will allow you to record Pro Res RAW or Blackmagic RAW at 422 and up to 6K!" And of course you need a pro camera cage from like Small Rig, a DJI Gimbal, a follow focus, a V-Mount battery, a shoulder rig, a tripod, and of course, a Sigma or Canon 24-70 zoom, fancy primes, or CIne Primes from Meike or Rokonon. At the end of the day, how much is your digital cinema rig costing you? Like $4,000 to $5,000 on the LOW end, and upwards of $10 grand depending on how expensive of a camera body you decided to get because you just HAD to get Full Frame over APS-C or a Canon Body over a Panasonic because it has better autofocus. Whatever the case may be, let's face it, you're not saving that much money going digital anymore, you're just not. $1400 bucks for a 16mm camera, and $130 bucks to develop a roll of 100ft film...let's assume you're shooting a short film and you planned and rehearsed every single scene. Most you MIGHT be spending is $2000 grand on the camera plus film stock. That's less than a Panasonic GH6, Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 6K (and 6K Pro), Canon C200/R5/R7/C70, a RED Komodo, Sony A7III/A7SIII, and a Sigma FP. Just the bodies, mind you, not even tricked out with lenses and everything else I just mentioned. I guess you can RENT a digital camera for cheap, but that's really it. If you plan to own something, it hardly makes sense, unless you hate the film look of 16mm. Which is totally fine, but then also don't try so hard to get "the film look" on you digital ass camera you spent thousands of dollars on. Someone recently asked Quentin Tarantino how he feels about Digital Cameras can emulate the Film look these days like with the ARRI Alexa being the Go-to for so many Hollywood Filmmakers these days. He laughed and said "If you want the film look, just shoot on film!" Honestly, he's not wrong. And depending on what you're doing and how much you're willing to spend on the best Mirrorless or Cinema camera on the market, heck man, shooting film might just be more cost effective at this point.

Thinking about this more, and not to troll because you are doing great work, but call it what it is - a war. Putin calls it the "situation in Ukraine." I get your take with Max, but Brae, dude, it's a bad look. You can disagree, but it's true. For every K-3 video, you should at least offset it by supporting a Kiev 60 vendor in Ukraine. If you think Max is hurting, my Arax repair guys in Ukraine had their city bombed. They moved to another country, and they didn't ask for that. Unfortunately, complacency is compliance.
