Shohei Ohtani (大谷翔平)'s translator fired over allegation of 'massive theft' due to gambling debt
Спорт
Ben Verlander discusses the recent news that Shohei Ohtani's translator, Ippei Mizuhara, has been fired by the Los Angeles Dodgers after an allegation of 'massive theft' due to questions surrounding at least $4.5 million in wire transfers sent from Ohtani's bank account to a bookmaking operation set off a series of events.

Shohei Otani is a pure baseball boy.
From what I have read from the ESPN article, I think this is what happened (which I believe all is very reasonable and plausible and probably what transpired): 1. Ippei started betting with upfront money, which is legal (although I am not sure if it's still legal to bet in California, even with upfront money). 2. Somewhere along the way, Ippei starts betting on credit, which apparently is definitely illegal and does so with an illegal betting organization. 3. Ippei gets way in over his head and finally confides to Shohei, who being unfamiliar with gambling, agrees to pay Ippei's debts, not knowing this could technically make him by association a conspirator in an illegal activity. It's very possible Shohei had no idea what he was getting into, as I myself who has lived in the United States for nearly 60 years had no absolutely no knowledge about gambling laws. 4. Either Ippei by himself, or with Shohei alongside him, pay off the debt online and the bookie tells him (or both) to put "loan" on the memo. 5. Ippei gives an interview to ESPN to admit his guilt and exonerate Shohei to let everyone know that it was Ippei and not Shohei that was gambling. 6. While Ippei's intentions were good, he did not realize that even if Shohei simply wanted to help pay off his friend's debt, Ippei had unintentionally implicated Shohei in the whole mess. 7. Shohei's attorneys realized the severity of this and so they now say Shohei had no involvement and knowledge whatsoever, in order to totally distance him from the whole matter. 8. Ippei realizes he had compounded his gambling with further putting Shohei in hot water and now is backtracking what he stated in the original confession. The feds are investigating now and I think the truth is very close to what I have outlined above. I am fairly confident Shohei never gambled and the investigation will prove this. His whole character, actions, behaviors and lifestyle would point to his disinterest in gambling. Whether or not Shohei tried to pay off Ippei's debts is the real question. If he did, technically he violated the law, although it was out of naivete and ignorance of the gambling laws. Even if you did not know the speed limit but drove above it unknowingly, you are still guilty of the offense under the law. It sucks but that is our judicial system. Still, I do not think that is an offense worthy of suspension, perhaps a fine. Of course, there is a possibility that Shohei was in the dark about everything and Ippei was straight up accessing Shohei's account without his knowledge. We'll find out, of course, but I think this is much ado about nothing.

Hello Ben-san, I've been watching your videos from Japan. Sorry for my poor English. Most Japanese don't think Ohtani is a gambler. Some people including myself first believed in what Mizuhara said in the interview and the team meeting and thought Ohtani had paid for Mizuhara's debt. But hearing what people who have experience in dealing with gambling addicts say, I start to think Mizuhara actually lied about Ohtani helping him with his debt. I also think Mizuhara lies that he didn't know that sports betting was illegal in CA. If Ohtani knew about Mizuhara's problem, I don't think he would have taken photos of themselves with their wives in them. He has been very careful of showing their family members to public. The first thing he does is to protect them who are 'civilians'. I don't think he would show his wife or Mizuhara's wife to public knowing that it could affect them in some way.
The thing is Ohtani is to nice, first he deferred money just to make only $2 million dollars for the better of the team, and now lending his buddy Ippei money to help his debt. And Shohei get's the blame for both of that generosity.
I don't think Ohtani is a gambler. Nothing in his public or financial personality says he's a gambler to me.

I agree, and Ohtani does'nt need money to gamble, he makes a hundred million dollars in endorsements alone. And even if Shohei knew and lend his buddy Ippie the money what crime did he commit. But when a player is as great as Ohtani is there'll be haters, we saw that with Micheal Jordan and Tom Brady, trolls coming on knocking them of anything.
@omgbygollywow

Yes. Unlike Michael Jordan, who was a notorious gambler and was fine with everyone knowing his gambling tendencies. He would even bet people on personal card games and golf shots. Michael Jordan had that dark and hyper-aggressive side to him that was very much in your face and he even fought his own teammates not to mention his opponents. Shohei Ohtani is the anti-Jordan in all respects. He is quiet, mild-mannered, unperturbed, polite and his lifestyle, behavior and actions have consistently been antithetical to gambling or anything of that nature.

Ohtani will give a press conference before long. The most probable story at this stage , in my opinion, is that Ippei asked Ohtani for financial help and Ohtani being a nice guy accepted it because Ippei is his best friend and the money asked was relatively small for him.
Ben looks so sad
I can't get my head around why Dodgers would allow Ippei to do interview with ESPN, when this investigation has been going for months?
@KramericaIndustries7

This. Though technically it was Shohei spokesperson who 'presented' Mizuhara for the interview. For an Ohtani camp that keeps everything tight lipped and so carefully orchestrated, it seems baffling why they would encourage anyone speaking out beyond a simple, to the point generic statement ("no comment", "shohei has no knowledge of involvement"). Doesn't matter that it was his close friend giving the interview; just a bad idea for any potentially involved party in a legal/criminal investigation to be talking at length with media. I don't see what Ippei thought he had to gain saying anything, however truthful or dishonest it may have been.. either way he admits to what he did, loses his relationship, connection, reputation, employment and financial support from Shohei.
Say it ain’t so. I’m an Astros fan and I hate this. A once in a lifetime player entangled in something that could go really bad is terrible for the sport.
Thank you for covering this story responsibly, with compassion and nuance. So much noise going on.

I doubt Ohtani can name 10 NFL teams or any college football players let alone bet on them.
Don’t think Sho is that stupid. The only gamble he would make is stealing base. Everybody should know how an addict works, gambling, drugs or alcohol. They are masters of lying and hiding their addiction even from their family and spouses!!

Sports betting is illegal in California, so it is the heart of the problem. If sports betting is legal in CA, then neither the bookie, Ippei, or Ohtani would be in trouble. It would also not be illegal for Ohtani to pay off a friend's gambling debt. Gambling is legal in California, such as State lottery, horse racing, casinos, etc... just not sports betting, which is stupid. I guess as long as the state gets a cut, it's fine.

11:53- This isn't Shohei's first encounter with adversity. When he first started with the Angels, it took him some initial time in his rookie season to find his footing, and not long after he had to face Tommy John surgery and a long rehab. Currently, he's been going thru his 2nd major rehab on his throwing arm.
Thank you Ben.
You both are absolutely correct, let the information develop and release before jumping to conclusions. Most of the comments I have seen on Social media are alleging Ohtani was in on this are being irresponsible. Perhaps it’s the government making it a big deal. Think about it. Shohei’s mega salary is mostly deferred helps Shohei avoid paying mega taxes. I’m sure that makes both the state and feds very unhappy. That’s just an interesting twist that comes to mind.
Ippei probably didn't enroll in math courses in college like I did. I learn, the odds of a gambler making money is low. You're better off being the House/Casino. Tip, gamble only to enjoy watching a game.

If the interpreter was truly set as a fall guy, It would be more well-crafted scenario and they haven't must let the interpreter change his talk or Shohei wouldn't claim interpreter's lie which get the stuation more complicated and lead himself to suspicion from people like you. Ippei was not only Shohei's interpreter but almost his manager. Shohei has some different bank accounts and he delegated Ippei to handle some of it. Also Shohei has must need Ippei's help when he open a new bank account. So it's not strange Ippei could access to Shohei's account. But anyway it's difficult to send such big money without nominee's recognition. At this point, unless the interpreter or Shohei bet to baseball game, Shohei will not face big punishment even though Shohei knew the debts was from illegal betting or he literally bet to there.

Without a doubt this is the greatest betrayal in professional sports, Ippei Mizuhara had ONE JOB and got paid around $300K+ a year so how could he be so stupid as to ruin his life and friendship with the biggest baseball player in the world? I basically read the ESPN article like 5x and the more you think about it the more you realize Mizuhara is one sleazeball POS. He basically waited for Ohtani to be a FREE AGENT and asked Shohei to bail him out of his gambling debts. What better f'king time to ask someone for a few million when he is about to sign a $700 million contract? Just imagine if Ohtani had said NO, not mine problem, what do you think Mizuhara would do or say to the media? He basically cornered Ohtani or Blackmail Ohtani into loaning him the money. This looks bad for Ohtani from a PR point of view, he made two payments of $500k to Bowyer's associate from his bank account, why didn't he just wire the money to Mizuhara's bank account so he could repay his debts? (Yeah I know it's dumb) it's the kinda strain that probably won't go anyway even if he is 100% innocent and I am convinced Ohtani is 100% innocent. I know gamblers, especially addicted gamblers, they always have a history with gambling, it's not something that just happened once or twice? it's for life until it destroys their family. Ohtani does not have a history of gambling, this is not something he could hide for years especially if he's using his money to make bets in other sports, and he definitely didn't decide to take a risk with his future and his career in MLB because he wanted to see what would happen if he placed some bets? Ohtani is guilty of naiveness and foolishness. He basically allowed Mizuhara to take advantage of him, he should never sent $1 million from his bank account. It's stupid. As for Mizuhara, I full-heartedly despise people like him, they're fake all on levels, he ruined his life and now he may have ruined the most gifted baseball player to ever play the game. Mizuhara shame on you, you disgusted me.

This is all speculation...I'm just trying to make sense from different pieces of available information. Here are my two-cents... The way Ippei described it in the ESPN interview is probably exactly what happened. Unfortunately, they didn't consult a lawyer before this mess or the interview, so neither Ippei nor Ohtani knew that paying off his gambling debts could be considered illegal. They thought that as long as Ohtani wasn't the person who bet, he would be fine. This explains why Ohtani used his real name when the money was transferred, and he didn't use a back channel account to transfer the money. The bookie and Ippei never alleged Ohtani ever made any bets. Ohtani's lawyer later explained to them that his action, though selfless and with good intention, can be seen as helping the bookie collect his money, an illegal act. As such, Ohtani can get into trouble with the authorities. It was then Ohtani's camp changed the story and blamed Ippei for stealing the money. The question is whether Ippie reluctantly agreed to go along with the story and take the fall to save Ohtani from further embarrassment and potential trouble.
How do you know there wasn't betting on baseball? You're taking the word of someone who literally just came out and said they spun a lie that lasted 90 minutes long? This also comes from someone who just said we don't know anything yet and shouldn't come to conclusions. You've got to rephrase what you said to "I hope there was no betting on baseball." Dude, the receipts are going to be investigated. MLB is going to find out about every single bet that Ippei made.

I might have bought the "official" story if the gambling debt was $50k but $4.5 million, they've left out a few details. No bookie would allow the debts to grow anywhere near these levels unless it was Ohtani's debt. Should be interesting to see this unfold.

Ohtani just announced a program to fund 100 kids in Japan to spend several weeks in American school. Gamblers don’t do that. Gamblers put every penny into their betting!
Occam's Razor dictates that Ippei is the gambler. Betting on sports is NOT a Japanese cultural past-time whereas in the US, it is -- which Ippei happens to be raised in (USA). Ohtani has no lick of an idea about football, basketball, tennis, etc., and he doesn't care either. All he knows and cares about is baseball (MLB). So the only realistic avenue for him to bet on is baseball BUT that is colossally stupid because -- common sense also dictates -- you shouldn't bet on the games you are scheduled to play and you really shouldn't bet on any other games either because of a conflict of interest -- and, especially, insider knowledge -- will present itself sooner or later when you belong in the same league. It's common sense. Shohei is a world class athlete with hundreds of millions in deferred money set aside for him. Sports gambling is beneath him -- no use (he's generationally wealthy) or time for it -- and is typically reserved for the (not so rich) general public -- which Ippei is essentially a part of. I struggle to think Ohtani can be that dense.

Exactly that part made me say what the heck are you talking about.
I don’t care what Ohtani did, Ohtani is always Ohtani
How do you know it wasn't gambling on baseball
Simply go back and look at Ohtani's worst, out of character, performances going back 3 or 4 years. I did, and it is illuminating. And I'm no investigator. This is easy: the guy bet millions on baseball games with funds originating from his hometown in Japan, then he threw the games. Easy. He probably thought it was funny.
Yo....4.5 mil is ONLY 2 years of Ohtani's contract, why not more? Why isn't MLB involved? (We all, hopefully, know why) Why discredit the original story given to ESPN? This kinda leads to Ohtani doing something he shouldn't have.
Ben is devastated that his boyfriend is in trouble. LOL It's hard to believe that Shohei didn't know any of this and I wouldn't be surprised if he was part of the gambling issue. Plus both Shohei and Ippei were laughing it up before the game. If Ippei stole the money Shohei would be furious at him...not laughing it up.
Not a regular viewer of this channel. But many issues with what they both said. It is a big deal Alex, its illegal in California, Illegal.!! She obviously wasnt aware of that. Second, Eppei was in the dug out as usual for the second game. Verlander said they still have another game to play after the story broke, he wasnt fired yet. Alex, This isnt dominating any channel from what i viewed so far. I watched numerous top of the hour broadcast on multi screen with ESPN and Fox Sports. Not once was this even their lead story, not once. Football and Basketball was..National networks are giving this story less than 4 minutes of air time that i have seen on average..so her dominating the news really is completely wrong..Not very impressed at all with the lack of fact here. But im really not a viewer, just caught them while chanel surfing. But do some homework guys ..!!
Why is everyone so quick to cover for this guy?...none of you know him and what he's into
Alex Curry - 😍
Ben, how can you say at least we know there was no betting on baseball when your taking the word of an interpreter who’s admitted to lying repeatedly. At this point it’s more plausible to believe ohtani was completely aware of these payments given the fact they were laughing it up before game 1.
Believe Ohtani, time will tell.
