That true story is probably the most benevolent; one where Ohtani was a dumb and naive but trying to help out a friend but in the process of doing so may have crossed a legal line. There's been no reason to believe Ohtani knew of the gambling nor was participating in it in any way (that we know of at the moment).

My main question is who handles Shohei Ohtani’s finances on a day-to-day basis? Does he not have a professional doing this? If he has a business manager handling his finances, there’s no way that person was unaware of these massive money transfers. ESPN reportedly looked at 2 $500K payments from Ohtani’s account that were last Sept and Oct. Are we supposed to believe that no one except Mizuhara knew about this until it popped up during a Federal Investigation? Others are clearly complicit based on common sense.

  • @hh.3727

Fact 1: Miauhara started gambling since 2021, after he met with this illegal booker in San Diego. Ohtani wasn't aware of this for the whole time, until Mizuhara confessed his gambling habits and apologized to the teammates at the clubhouse, and Ohtani didn't understand what Mizuhara was talking about, so Ohtani asked another interpreter about Mizuhara, then Ohtani discovered that his account was used in September and October, when he was just starting the healing process after the surgery. Ohtani asked his attorney to investigate, and the attorney discovered that the transfers were made to the illegal booker. That's how it went. In Japan, Ohtani's finances were managed by his mother, and here, his finances were managed by Mizuhara, especially when Ohtani was healing from the surgery, when Mizuhara handled Ohtani's bill payments during the healing process.

For me who don’t gamble, I don’t know the difference between legal and illegal gambling!? From a normal Japanese perspective, the many laws and rules in America and what is concider felony is so complicated that they thought this was a private friend matter to ask for help and Ohtani, being kind hearted, especially to Ippei who has done so much for his career, though expressing disappointment, he agreed to help him. IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE SIMPLE AS THAT.. Ohtani is the opposite, don’t smoke, drink, no night clubbing, probably never seen inside of a gambling hall, doesn’t even go out in New York(admittedly), total strict discipline since his high school days…There is just no addiction at all. (Maybe baseball) Remember, addiction is a behavioral disease and nobody abandon an alcoholic or drug addicted friend when it comes out..this is complicated because of the law in the west is black and white. If you helped, you’re GUILTY. IF YOU DIDNT HELP, YOURE INNOCENT! It’s a cultural thing. Japanese will see that way that, West: you are you, I and I. East: For the sake of mutual peace..

What about scenario where games are being thrown? Throwing games could explain why the payments were so big because the bets made would have been so big (to make the juice worth the risk) the book wanted a large part of the bet down. Worst case scenario since you would have been betting on MLB+ throwing game. "The money was stolen" seems like such a drastic reversal of the story that this worst possible scenario should be considered. Why use an illegal book unless trying to avoid being tracked betting on MLB in legal online betting apps.

As an American, I am so ashamed of Mizuhara. Mizuhara is from Diamond Bar, CA, and he was Ohtani's trusted shepard in this country. It's disgusting how he either took advantage of Ohtani, or failed to steer him clear of the illegal bookie. All Mizuhara's claims about his credentials have been revealed as false, in that he never worked for Boston or NY Yankees or attended UC Irvine. He hooked up with Ohtani in Ohtani's teens, befriended him, and it looks like he replaced Ohtani's family. Apparently, all this happened while Ohtani was with the Angels. But the team knew nothing about the illegal gambling and massive amounts paid to that OC illegal bookie by Ohtani? How'd the Dodgers find out so quick and fire Mizuhara? This guy really appears to have taken advantage of his trust with Ohtani.

For Ohtani, whether his intention was good, out of kindness and friendship or not, the fact as of now is his name got involved in an illegal gambling operation in CA. From what I've read somewhere (I don't remember where.), this guy's operation is legal in 40 states, and CA is not one of them. For Mizuhara, It was naive or ignorant not to check whether the bets were legal in his state. I don't gamble, so I have no idea how this betting works, but did he just trust this guy and place a bet over the phone or something? No matter what kind of addiction, it'll be hard to kick.

@mirikaku5811 10 years ago, sports gambling in the U.S. was pretty restricted. There are some jurisdictions that don't allow it; most that do allow it because they can charge a tax (or receive some amount of money) from gambling. Good grief. The story was changed to protect Ohtanis reputation in Japan because in Japan, Ohtani is a larger than life from a cultural standpoint. Here in America, he is just a really tall Asian dude who plays baseball.

    1) Here in America, he is a Cy Young AND Silver Slugger candidate when healthy. But because baseball is possibly less popular than the NBA right now (& much less than football), he can fly under the radar. 2) Also here in America, you can be suspended/banned as a MLB player for giving money to a bookie. A different commenter pointed out that if he broke a federal law, he'd probably be deported.
