This is why I liked the Richard Chamberlain version of John Blackthorn better than the current actor. Not only because in my opinion it was closer to the novel.. But in the 1980 version Blackthorn comes off much more intelligent and willing to adapt and respect the Japanese culture that the current actor, that could be because of the writing. However where in the 1980 version one can see how he would have gained Toranaga's trust and respect, I don't feel that with the current version. Maybe if there is a second season it will become clearer, but as of now, he just comes off as a bumbling barbarian.

There are other outside factors as well on why each person would prefer one over the other: charm vs. grit, ease of storytelling and nostalgia are which come to mind when laying my own critique when comparing side-by-side time periods or contemporary film perspective.
