idk, about the dream, mariko's medal wasn't unique, in fact I imagine the Portuguese priest would give her one fairly common back in his homeland. Plus, we come back to the dream, it's more than one scene. And when have you ever dreamed yourself to be very old? No dream I ever heard of includes the dreamer being old. Perhaps the scenes are meant to be ambiguous. You can think of it as a dream if you want. Maybe?

Given that Clavell's material is finished and the general track record for creating new material based on previous work isn't good, I'm fine with wishing there was more instead of regretting a bad second season.
"Ultimate excellence lies not in winning every battle, but in defeating the enemy without ever fighting". -Sun-Tzu Torunaga embodied that perfectly. He sacrificed as few pieces on the board as possible and ensured their deaths all served a greater purpose. The other members on the council of regents threw away the lives of their subjects like they didn't matter and gained nothing from it.
As much as I loved the show, I don't want them to extend it making a second season.

I think the finale is superb even without a huge battle scene. The title of the book is Shogun (将軍 which means general in Chinese) and the finale really shows us how brilliant Toranaga is as a general. He fought using clandestine and covert strategies. Almost Sun Tzu like. He said, he does not control the wind, only study it. He did that brilliantly as a military leader to a point that the final outcome of the battle was already decided.

"Shogun" emerges as a captivating journey into the heart of medieval Japan, showcasing valor, intrigue, and cultural richness with unparalleled finesse. The series not only transports viewers to a bygone era but immerses them in its intricacies, thanks to its meticulous attention to detail and historical accuracy. One of the standout features of "Shogun" is its breathtaking cinematography, which beautifully captures the essence of feudal Japan. From sweeping landscapes to intimate character moments, every frame is a visual feast that enhances the storytelling experience. Opposite ending grade from me. I gave the finale a 3/10. I read the original novel as well as watched the 1980 show, and while I thought the first 9 shows of this new series were outstanding, the last one just left me feeling disappointed based on what I have read and have already seen. I mean, the whole "dream sequence" diversion at the beginning did not appear in either the book or the 1980s show. Why not just bring the 1975 novel to life like Peter Jackson did with the "Lord of the Rings" series? After all, I don't want someone's additional "creative" intepretation or input on a beloved work, I just want some literary work to be brought to life. Why is that such a hard thing to understand? Watch the "Lord of the Rings" series or the awesome Granada "Sherlock Holmes" shows from the 1980s as proof as to what sticking to the source material can bring.

The dream scene with Blackthorne on his deathbed back in England makes no sense and does not advance the storyline. They would have been better to have kept in Mariko's funeral scene, but they keep changing things. This episode was better than the last, but if you want to watch a better Shogun series watch the one from the 80's with Chamberlain as Blackthorne. It was much better.
@samlanganke1262

It was good for 1980 and founded my interest for Japan then. But in retrospect it was way too "Hollywood". Blackthorne was the white adventure superstar which Chamberlain was in these days after doing the 1970s versions of Count of Monte Christo and Three Musketeers. But that is NOT John's role.

8:40 I love it when Yabushige said that. On earlier episode he said that cracking your head is much more lower than boiling to death, he also states that its not worse than being dogs eating your body. Edit: I don't think there is a need for season, its just the series ended in a hypothetical ending. I'd only 1-3 episode short for an actual ending for it
Perhaps when John says, Unless I win, it inspired Tokunaga to realise he took could do the impossible by winning, having felt defeated up till then. He did quote him after all at the end.

I remember reading about the history of this period and remember of being disgusted with just how vile a person Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toranaga in the show) was. So seeing this show portray him in such a positive light up till the very end was strange. Ieyasu reminds me so much of Octavian, almost like they were the same person reborn over a thousand years later into a different culture. I can't help but feel bad for Ishida Mitsunari who tried desperately to stay loyal and do his duty, only to fail at the end. That said, neither of them were likely very good people. Its just that one has more noble traits than the other, at least from what we are told.

Incredible show
Knowing one month later the battle of Sekigahara would take place. Tokugawa Ieyasu was out numbered 75,000 to 120,000 and only lost about 4000 warriors compared to west that lost about 32,000. Therefore winning the war and becoming Shogun.
A season two would be weird. Almost every major character died. Excpet John, Torunaga, Omi, Buntaro and the Portuguese Catholics. I wouldn't be opposed to a season two, but it would be very bittersweet
I loved it!
Captivating series and engaging characters. Torunaga is charismatic and powerful. Mariko-sama is so captivating. She reminded me of Daenerys Targaryen. This series has a much better ending than Game of Thrones. It's much better overall. I wish there would be season 2.
Yabushige was a great character, love how there's no rightgeous party, all of them human. I wasn't rooting for anyone, just enjoying a delightful drama.
It stayed true to the book, at most. Everyone just wanted a big battle scene. Even myself 😆.
Having watched the original series in 1980 and having read the book prior to that, I was not especially impressed with the 2024 version. So much was changed without any real purpose. The conflict between Blackthorne and Father Alvito, the relationship between Blackthorne and Rodrigues, the fact that Blackthorne was a highly educated man who rapidly became fluent in Japanese (the character was a polyglot: fluent in English, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin), the dynamics of the relationships between Obi, Yabu, Kiku, and Blackthorne (Kiku eventually became Anjin's wife much to Obi's dismay). It was Obi who stopped Blackthorne from killing himself over the threat to Anjiro based on an order from Yabu. Even the Buntaro archery scene was dumbed down. The rescue of Yabu after his being washed overboard was completely changed for no apparent reason. It was just a jarring experience for someone who read and loved the book.

He doesn't care ultimately if Anjin lives or dies, or if he has to kill more townspeople in the search of the "traitors". What he cares about is Anjin's attachment to the people, to Japan and more importantly to Toranaga himself. That's all he wants to see, so when Anjin says take my life but spare the townspeople...he knows he's won, against Anjin. He knows Anjin cares. He knows that Anjin doesn't think the people are all "stupid". Toranaga has a vassal...

And he admitted he'll burn his ship again once rebuilt. He's the biggest psychopath in the show and is enemy number 1.

@@SutterKrump Yup. The whole premise is about what people are willing to do get what they want, and what people are willing to risk to do so. Underlying is the Japanese sense of duty and honor and they conflict with the 1st point. There will be sacrifice, but people do so honorbound. The older general, forget his name, he knew there was a strategy. He didn't know Toranaga's specific strategy, but he knew the end goal and he was honorbound to accept his death was necessary to the goal. Mariko the same. She knew she was a pawn in a larger scheme, but her honor demanded she sacrifice herself to the plan. The ends justify the means. Really deep, well done, enjoyed the show immensely l!

@@mikenunz duty and honor... By murdering your own people not grazing a hair on your enemy's head. I call bullshit and this is a made up fictional story. Also, there's no evidence his "master plan" even worked because there's no season 2 yet and the flash forward we saw was only a vision in this twisted psychopath's head. A "leader" like Toranaga would've been taken out immediately

@@mikenunz how do you know he got what he wanted when the battle between him and Ishido hasn't happened yet? Toranaga spent this whole season killing his own people. I was under the impression you were supposed to kill your enemies, but Toranaga does the opposite.

@@SutterKrump Well, since it's based on historical events, we know Tokugawa (Toranaga) wins the Battle of Sekigehara. But within the framework of the book itself, truthfully the outcome of the battle itself is irrelevant. This is because Toranaga's plans and schemes, how he used people, etc were all about getting a battle at all. That's it. He doesn't become Shogun without a battle. He doesn't get a battle without a plan. This part of the story is about The Plan, not the battle.
Adaptation of Gai-Jin by James Clavell could be a fitting sequel for Shogun
I want season 2 to be “bruh, where’s my samurai sword?”
this series was masterpiece
Toronaga is the Ayanokoji of Feudal Japan 😊
This is the moment Toranaga truly became Heishogunberg. Sasuga, Vince-dono.
Ok so there won’t be a second series, but how about a movie of the battle of sekigahara using all the same actors? Basically anyone who watched shogun would defo watch that.
loved it great finale
I loved the series and hope it gets a 2nd season!

no, it was already stretch enough
The Art of War indeed
This show was brilliant.
I'm shocked people were disappointed. Got season 1 didn't have huge battles. But what made season 1 amazing was political intrigue and character development. So many characters died I expected to live. The reveal he has been wanting to be shogun the whole time. Just all of it I loved. I feel like if you had a some huge end game war people would still hate it. And they tell you where and what will happen. Ishido is going to lose. He won't have the support for the regents due to oshiba aligning with Toranaga. It was a giant chess match. And I loved it. Tho I really would have liked a season 2.

Perhaps you wouldn't be so shocked if you had read the novel or had seen the original 1980s adaptation. Maybe then you would understand why some people didn't view the finale of this 2024 show as the Second Coming of Christ. As much as I admired this new version, the last show was disappointing and left many people feeling unfulfilled (and count me in as one of them). I think they dropped the ball on this one.

@@dmacleod3843 your opinion noted - and now intend on reading the novel. I did see the original, but not with weekly anticipation as this one. as good as he was, he was still 'dr kildair' to me. thanks for your input.

I also feel there had been some people who were not needed for his asencion.
I have been waiting since like episode 4 or 5, for the big ol hammer to drop on a HUGE reveal/twist, of Toranaga talking alone with John, and BOOM, hitting us with English and that he's been fluent in it this whole time Full disclosure, only vaguely remembered that this was even a book, had less than 0 clue this was a miniseries in 1980 or whenever lt was lolol

lol bro thinks exactly the same as me. i always think of characters in the series have a twist and speak englsh lollllll
Sometimes duty is the death of love 😢
Why do some media referred to Shogun as " Season 1"? Season 1 implies there's Season 2, etc...when we all know, it's just a mini'series or limited series.
While I knew that this series would not be able to do the book justice, a few more episodes would have been able to resolve things. Although I can understand not having the battle, just having Toranaga explain himself on a cliffside is just weak. The series has masterfully brought to life fuedal Japan along with its intrigues and violence. The finale was like watching an enormous carnival ride grind to a halt. The power/funding was cut and the producers had to wind it up before it stopped altogether and left too many threads up in the air.
The Lord Torenaga actor is the same guy who was the manager of the Osaka Continental Hotel in the John Wick movies. There was sword fighting in that forth John Wick movie too. 😮
I cant wait for them to show the battle of sekigahara in season 2, that scene just made me lose my shit. also if they show Date Masamune being played by Ken Watanabe, I'm going to be hyped
I manned the rails of a ship in Shimano, during the Black Ship festival. Never really understood it, 'till now. Shogun got me interested and I am sad to see the miniseries' ending. Someone should continue the Barbarian's story... Even if, partly historical.
Shogun is a brilliant masterpiece...enough said
season 2 is possible if they utilize william adams(the real life inspiration to john blackthorne) full story which continues even after shogun ends
I don’t want a new season - but it would be cool if we get a movie based on Sekigahara.
Lol, your pronunciation of Japanese words and names is hilarious, Maeriko and shoguhn are priceless. Lmao.
