SHOGUN - The Masterpiece You're NOT Watching!

Ойын-сауық

Shogun is a masterpiece. The show (technically a mini-series) is now streaming on Hulu (it is an FX show) runs ten episodes and spans through feudal Japan in the 1600s. The series is based on the famous James Clavell novel that also spawned a 1980 miniseries starring Richard Chamberlain. The series is outstanding, featuring incredible acting, wonderful direction and tense/dramatic writing. Nater Tot recommends that you do whatever you can to watch the show!

Shogun has wrapped me up in a tight bow of awesomeness. I love this series and fully plan on picking up the book to read as well. I apologize for not posting as much as I'm trying to find what works best with my health, enjoyment and attention span. This is a Lost and Found of sorts as I don't really hear that many people talking about it. I hope you check out the series and enjoy what is a truly great piece of television. If you haven't, please check out my new channel with Pop Tot. We are having a blast reviewing Lost and Found films that range from total disasters to movies that needed just a little more love. Hope to see you guys on the next one! - Mr. Tot

I love this show so much! It's perfect so far! Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, and Anna Sawai are amazing as Toranaga, Blackthorne, and Mariko. My favorite bites are when Blackthorne and Toranaga are on screen together. They have such fantastic chemistry. This show will win Emmys.

If it doesn’t, something is wrong. The competition would have to be insane for it to not win big awards, especially in production design.

Great show and analysis. Small correction aroun 2:20. Is not the emperor who dies, but the previous unifier/taiko, based on Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Hiroyuki Sanada is the only one I can see playing the titular character besides Toshiro Mifume. They both draw you in and draw you into the intriguing machinations of Yoshi Torunaga

More of a Shogun of Thrones or that one Tom cruise samurai movie?

  • @NaterTot

I'd say it definitely leans into the Shogun of Thrones. Not in terms of violence or over the top, but how the subject material is. I feel like Game of Thrones requires a bit of a whiteboard and some notes. Shogun, the first episode felt like that just a bit. Of course, the language difference doesn't help (but as someone who has subtitles ALWAYS on, it doesn't bother me). After the first episode, everything connects.

I would agree with Nater. More Shogun of Thrones, especially season 1 of GOT where you understand the chatacters and motivations but dont have as many as families as GOT in the Shogun.

What is interesting is that Tom Cruise's movie happens at the other end of this show. Its around the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate (Toranaga's character) when the Emperor Menji took back control from the Samurais and opened the country to foreigners again. Tom Cruise fights for the last samurais trying to keep their style of life.

I love this series as well. I do wish however that they had allowed at least 16 episodes. It feels rushed and because of this rush, some key character developement is sorely lacking. But over all, this will become one of my favorite limited series. I will rewatch this one.

The irony in this is a lot of people feel it is too slow. I’d be totally okay with more episodes anyway as the world building is so engaging and I love the characters.

@@NaterTot @NaterTot I don't find it slow at all, as it is very engaging in plot and character developement. My "payoffs" can wait as long as the story is excellent. For me this is excellent with some kwibbles about cutting it too short and thereby truncating some of the character archs

Just a small thing, the Taikō was not the Emperor. The Emperor is still alive and well in Kyoto, wielding very little power. The Taikō was a sort of regent for life. This is very relevant in the climax of the book (I'm not sure if the Emperor is going to appear in the show as well, but just in case).

This is the best incarnation of _Shogun_ so far! Most westerners will not appreciate or understand the many-layered omote vs. ura nuances of Japanese culture, and particularly the Japanese martial arts - since the shogun is the foremost bushi / samurai / martial artist of Japan - masterfully woven into the screenwriting and character portrayals. It’s so good!

Cosmo Jarvis 100% looks like Tom Hardy (or at least a brother). Ironically, he doesn't look much like Blackthorne in real life (nor sound like him). He does a great job with his accent in making it feel a lot deeper/gruffer than it is.

It is a great show, and all the japanese actors are amazing. Unfortunately the Anjin actor is pretty bad and totally uncharismatic. The 1980s mini series is still a tiny bit better, especially regarding the lead western actor and the cinematography. The old version also made the IMO genius decision to not use subtitles for the japanese dialog, so the viewer is just as confused and relying on a translator as the main character. This approach loses some context but it worked very well.

The approach with the subtitles allows us to follow along in the non Blackthorne/Anjin scenes. Much like the book, not all scenes and plots revolve around Blackthorne. This gives us a broader context (like the book) into what is happening with the Japanese characters. We didn't get that in the 80s version.

Masterpiece?? Please.... The book sure was, the 1980 mini series was.... but this reimaged "Shogun" on FX is a gutted version of what James Clavell actually wrote! You can see the difference of a true writer with imagination and the will to research his subject vs the FX version of a wannabe screenwriter. What happened to all the characters and their interactions? They butchered the relationships of Blackthorne with Mariko and Rodrequiez. They fail to show what a slime ball Yabu really is and they skip over the the involvement of the church to it's total extent. Most of all they fail to show the shrewdness, manipulative power and intelligence of Toranaga... I prefer the book and the 80's version all day long... Disappointed in this seems they are relying on the shock factor and visual aspects allowed by today's technology..
