Shōgun follows the collision of two ambitious men from different worlds, John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), a risk-taking English sailor who ends up shipwrecked in Japan, a land whose unfamiliar culture will ultimately redefine him; Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada), a shrewd, powerful daimyo, at odds with his own dangerous, political rivals; and Lady Mariko, a woman with invaluable skills but dishonorable family ties, who must prove her value and allegiance.

Madam Izu was telling Toronaga she knows he has a plan (his secret heart) and that's why she was making future plans. She knew he was going to win. Remember what Mariko said - "my lord is famous for his trickery"

Let's be honest his tricks wore dumb. Dressed up as a woman and hid in a carriage which if it wasn't for John he'd of been caught. Keeps changing John's agreement untill he gives in. Well after you know who's death. Let's his best friend die, to make everyone believe he had given up. Yet the very next episode no one brought it, so his death was in vain. Using his sons death was grim. And ep 9 ending. Will admit was a little clever but still lacking. Then learning of the secret spy wasn't really trickery.

I agree. It's the narrative to see him as a bad guy. But I can see both sides. I find it laughable when reactors get mad at Buntaro for not wanting Blackthorne around his Mariko. As if they would want their wife flirting/sleeping with another man.

I don't think they are 'misreading' at all. The show has all the cues we are used to in media to signal action is intimate. Its done on purpose to build that tension, and then doesn't deliver the expected release so you remain tense and expect something has to happen soon. They are reading it as designed I think.

@Baddmedicine, 30:00 Oak, are you thinking about this from Lord Toranaga's point of view or yours? Toranaga, and everyone around him, is in lockstep with the rules and conduct of Japan. Everyone stays in their lane...well, almost everyone--we just saw what happens to someone who stepped out of it, and it didn't end well for Yoshii (Toranaga's eldest son). In any case, this episode showed us what Lord Toranaga was like when he was 12 years old, and I think you'd agree that he's the same person now. Change, drastic change isn't a thing here. Fuji, Buntaro, Mariko, heck even Yabushige, they all stay in their lane. They might speak of doing other things out of frustration, but they are all tethered to their culture and social roles. Fuji wants to play her part and join her late husband and child. The only thing stopping her is her duty to her lord. Mariko wants to join her late family, but she can't either. She told us in this episode that her life belongs to her husband and that she cannot die unless he wills it, and even then it isn't that easy since her newfound religion forbids it. Buntaro was to kill John something fierce, but he can't because his lord forbids it. No matter how badly Buntaro wants to kill John, he will not go against his lord's will. Everyone has a role to play; they will do as their culture dictates because everyone stays in their lane. The biggest difference between Japan and Western countries is that Japan is a homogenous country; its people are united by history, culture, and customs, one that is thousands of years old. Japan's only real outside influence before religion entered the country was China, and even that was minimal as China didn't really want anything to do with Japan at the time. Filial piety is a Chinese import and it still shapes Japan to this day. Men are at the top of their family pyramid, the father followed by the firstborn son--if the grandfather is still living, he of course is above the father, as we see here with Buntaro's father and Fuji's grandfather, Hiromatsu (Toranaga's right hand). Fuji obeys the command of her uncle, Buntaro, until it goes against norms. Hatamoto is a rank above Buntaro's station, which is why Fuji was allowed to speak to her uncle the way she did two stories back when she told him that she had been ordered to serve John while refusing to answer his question. Buntaro, in turn, knew not to take the matter any further, as well. A person's family is their first pyramid, and their family are members of a larger community--there is always a more noble person sitting at the top of that pyramid, and they will give that person the respect he deserves while following his decree. For this village, that person was Yabushige, but the person above him is Toranaga, which is why he's the one pulling the shots here. John sees things differently, as you do because he is from a different world which was influenced by wars and the mingling of other cultures: the English, Spaniards, Portuguese, etc. They have things in common with one another, but they are all at each other's throats. That isn't the case in Japan. Religion in Japan is anything like what John has experienced. Religion is more like culture/customs then and now. One's lord feudal lord is who brings everyone together, and they all live by his command. Sure, we see the regents plotting to reshape Japan, particularly Ishido, but we also see others slow-walking those plans. They agree to a point, but they all don't want the same things and that's playing out in the open. Still, we see the regents following protocol even while they plot to take control--everyone, even when seeking power--stays in their lane, lol. Yoshii, Lord Toranaga's son really wanted to make a name for himself. And why wouldn't he? He's the son of a war hero, and he's got big shoes to feel. Society expects great things from Yoshii; the weight on his shoulders must be crushing. Look at the late Taiko's son, Yaechiyo, he's only 14 and he's expected to do what his father did and then some. Everyone in society knows their place, and they don't step out of it. Without a grand intervention like Ishido promoting an actor to Regent or Lord Toranaga making John his Hatamoto or the like, you are stuck in the role you were born into. Everyone in this period stays in their lane, including Lord Toranaga.

I only realized buntaro gets defensive as soon as he says your first kill is better than your first woman since he really loves Mariko and can’t take any form of disrespect to her. Also just to be sure buntaro’s problem stems from the fact that he loves Mariko but all she ever wants is to be dead and keeps asking for it ever since they got married so he can’t take it anymore and is breaking. He can’t leave her since he doesn’t know what she will do, can’t be with her because she is not happy so he does only thing he knows best as a warrior brute force the problem away.

"Contact" is the sci-fi where they built the 2nd machine in secret. Funny that you mention it. The 2nd machine was built in Japan. They mined the IP instead of submitting a candidate to send on the expedition. A very Japanese way of thinking, they get all the technical upgrades, knowledge of the universe, all the initial testing problems worked out by someone else, none of the bad attention that come with being public. So when it all went to hell, none of the blame comes on them. It is easier as an outsider to their culture to think of how to fix the ending as an outsider, as John. Toronaga has to finish it. 8 fold fence, how many layers deep is the solution?

Ah isn't it cute how deep the white saviour trope is established that even after the show made clear again and again that Blackthorne is a pawn and a distraction people still come up with plans how his "superior" Europen knowledge, tactics or different view on things will win the day. Not saying he won't be useful in the Episodes to come. But so far neither side ever really considered any of his proposals. The main function he had was as a pawn to play with the Portugese and the christian Damios. And let's not forget that Toronaga also has implied to the priests that he can see a future where he hands over the barbarian to pay for his crimes should they convince the christian Damios that Ishido and not him is the one they should oppose.

I agree. I love the reactions to the show but I find myself forwarding past all of John's scenes. Most people don't hold him accountable for anything. It's ridiculous.

  • @golden--hand

To be fair, the show is written to give you that impression. John isn't a side character like Yabushige or Buntaro or something. And because of how media is formatted we expect main characters to play big roles. John is prominently displayed as the 'main' character of Shogun, I'd say he has more screen time then Toranaga, the true main character of the show. So the expectation is there regardless of the white savior trope. I absolutely agree some people fall into seeing this show through that lens, its hard not to considering how media for almost all time has been represented. But I think its fair to recognize the way the show is structured would likely lead someone who has never been exposed to that white savior perspective would still probably expect john to serve some greater role just because of how they chose to represent him as a character. And I think that's intentional. I'd say the vast majority root for John, not because 'white is right' or some kind of white savior brainwashing, its just cause that's how media intentionally makes you feel about main characters, we know them best and want them to succeed. Even shows where the main characters are bad guys who's morals we don't align with we root for because as the main character we know them best. The exact same, but less race/culture thing, could be said of peoples expectations of impending 'action' in this show too. The show makes you think a huge battle is on the horizon quite frequently, there are the narrative cues people have been trained to recognize in media that leads them to expect particular outcomes, but often the action is short lived compared to the buildup in other shows. When i first watched this series wanted John to get more involved not because he was a white guy so therefore knew better, but because I was hoping he was earning respect and could be helpful to Toranaga's cause because John had become actively eager to do so, he had started to assimilate to the culture and felt he belonged. I enjoyed seeing him adapt and find purpose here even if it was misguided. Anyway, my point is, I don't exactly think its fair to assume people who want to see Johns plans work out or to get more involved are entirely 'white savor' mentality people. I have seen others that absolutely do seem to come from that perspective, where they seem to know their modern perspective is best and that the European guy has it more figured out then the Japanese people. I don't think I see that here from this channel...

Instead of reacting to the content of Saeki’s words, Oak only noticed the reaction of the various vassals/mood of the room as well as the filming techniques used to emphasise the change in situation, as Saeki reveals that instead of being an ally, he has betrayed Toranaga. I might be wrong, but I feel like that was ultimately the message of the comment - just that the reactors didn’t catch something important, and only caught on to something of less significance

lol why does Oak keep saying the brother killed the son? The son clearly attached him in HIS living quarters, then slipped and cracked his skull. It wouldn't take an autopsy to figure that out.

Alas, we live in a Marvel world, so DC stuff is a low priority unless it's Batman. Superman and Lois is a spectacular series very truly underrated.

thissss. It’s in the trailer and mentioned in earlier episodes - talking about how the society they live in (feudal Japan) is so different, and how there are two types of leaders. There is one who works out in the open, and one in the shadows. In the very first episode Toranaga discusses the virtues of working behind the scenes and waiting for the right moment, as his falcon hides from its prey using the sun and then attacking at the opportune moment. This message has been scattered all throughout the episodes - it takes a different type of manoeuvring to get by in this political landscape. We as an audience might be more used/exposed to a certain type of leader and hero, but the rules are a bit different here. I wish Badd Medicine could understand this so that they might catch a bit more of what they’re missing, and better appreciate the nuances presented to them in the characters’ words and actions.

The director ended it with a Japanese dad joke. Ishi atama ' rock head ' is slang for stupid or stubborn. Ishi atama Yoshi was literally killed by an ishi atama. Morbid Japanese humor.

I like Bad Medicine usually, one of d best reactors but they seem ill suited 4 this exceptional show. It seems as if they're hoping 2 watch some action packed slapstick comedy or something! Which was fine in d initial episodes but it has been so annoying in d last few episodes when d sory has taken a very serious turn....taking abt more actions & laughing hysterically almost every other scene! Shogun is neither a full-blown action/war show nor is it that funny, even though there're some great fight scenes & hilarious dialogues/moments. It's a complex, serious & profound historical drama where each dialogue/action by characters have deep meaning...which Bad Medicine crew is totally missing in d middle of their inappropriate laughs & wrong theories/discussions.

I never liked the brother from the beginning. I found him rude and disrespectful. Maybe speak like that in private, but not in front of everyone. I found it intresting how you guys all trusted him so easily. Like you haven't been paying attention to what kind of show we are watching.

I guess it was rude from how we had seen people up until that point in the show. But almost everyone we had seen so far was just super duper formal because they are all involved in high politics and customs. He honestly just came off as laid back to me, a luxury of having some status but not being directly involved in the politics of the country, and a guy who casually takes the piss out of his younger brother which just seems like a common brotherly/family thing in some families. At least when they first introduce him I mean. From early in that night scene he seemed more rude I agree.
