Heads up. Remember in the Blue Eyed Samuri, When the ladies in the brothels always took pride in the way they poored the tea to clients? And notice how lady Kiko positions herself behind Mariko as if she was talking through her and not at him. Right before that encounter, she educated the assistant on the meaning of empty space with the tea pots. Game recognize game.

The cheapest rice near me works out to £7.125 per 5KG -> divide that by 5 = £1.425 to get the 1KG equivalent and then times that by 150 = £213.75 to get 1koku of rice; multiply that by 600 to get 600koku works out to £128,250 per month worth of current day rice market values

It all made sense. Like she said, Toda's name is worthless at the time. But it would also be the last name that would place her the furthest from her father.

Regarding Toranaga's rewards for John. Koku is a measurement of wealth based on volume of rice. 600 Koku = enough rice to feed 600 people for 1 year.

Lad's, Fuji almost stole this episode with 1 scene. Lady Kiko, she could read the tension between Blackthorn and Mariko. Yes Toranaga layed the seeds so Mariko's father would kill the regent. Crimson sky, note Toranaga never said,when will it be, tomorrow, next week or next year. Cheers, Chris Perry.

Ochaya ("Tea House") sometimes don't serve tea at all. It is a place to entertain guests. Ichiriki is a famous ochaya in Kyoto. It is one of the oldest most exclusive clubs in the world. Some of their clientele have ties that date back generations. The Akechi Jinsai storyline is inspired by a real 16th century rumor. IRL Akechi Mitsuhide betrayed Oda Nobunaga. Some thought it was Tokugawa Ieyasu who incited him into it because a personal grudge. Toyotomi Hideyoshi (later Taiko) killed Mitsuhide and seized power before Ieyasu could return to Kyoto.

Also Mariko father knew when she was married she belonged to Buntaro so they couldn't kill her.

This episode is so emotional 😢 I’m happy we finally learned Ochiba’s motivation for why she hates Toranaga. So much for my theory he was her baby daddy 😂

Ok, ill drop a wild theory chew toy for the show here: Ochiba wants Ishido dead. Thats why she has been manipulating him to act more rashly and brutally: what he is doing will eventually turn the entire council of regeants AGAINST HIM. Either Toranaga is the father of the heir or he knows who is. And Ochiba is playing a higher level game that what being depicted on screen. (Thats scenario 1 out of 13; i have not read the book, watched the 85 minisiries, or directly comparing it to the historical stuff at the end of the Sengoku Jidai)

@@khaii13 she definitely has motivation to see Toranaga and Ishido perish together ,because her son is still a child, can't protect himself.but we don't know the show is gonna goes by the book or references the history,like I said,the whole skull winebowl thing is much more dramatic

I'll just up and say it: Young Mariko was a delusional Disney Princess who wishes to be married into a family of a much higher station than what she got. She held contempt for Hidekatsu Toda-sama even then, and i didn't know this until this episode, she views him as beneath her station, or beneath her in ranking, as evidenced by her comment in the flashback about how her father is discarding him; also telling Ruri-hime (Ochiba sama) what a joke and worth less alliance it was to marry her off to the Toda family;and also by his comment to Toranaga about how his father should have married her better. This puts Hidekatsu Toda-sama in a more sympathetic light, though of course, we still disapprove of the Domestic violence. Put yourself in the man's shoes. Mariko looked down on her and that marriage even before they were married; Hated him for sparing her life, which, it turns out, is apparently her father's plan for marrying her off to him in the first place; and have been ice cold towards here for the length of their marriage, he probably only ever got the occasional pillowing because of obligation. That would drive any man bitter and resentful. which brings into question whether or not the physical abuse is a more recent occurrence or not (still not a good look and not something to be condoned either way); and if he had always acted harshly towards her in turn from the start or not, or if that was his defence mechanism towards mariko's cold treatment towards her. And so, when Toranaga revealed truth bombs to her, clearing up her misunderstanding, i was literally shouting at the screan “YES! THANK YOU!” So much so that the next door neighbour knocked on my door to check if i was OK. Lol Afterthought: though her words were subtitled “i have failed my father”, it could have also been translated as “I have betrayed my father’s trust” as in she betrayed him for wishing for death instead of noticing the great plans and hopes she placed on her when he married her off to a lesser house.

I love Fuji's look in the Tea House. Like butter wouldn't melt in her mouth.

I like that Mariko’s husband is an asshole, but we understand a bit more about him and why he’s still around. Just like all of these characters, he doesn’t feel two dimensional which a lesser show or movie could have easily done
