    Even though some people seem to think the horse is suffering, you can see that it's not. It's relaxed, you can see it chewing and licking its mouth. It's also standing with a relaxed posture. No horse in distress or pain would do that.

    @horsesaremylife31899 yes it should smoke, the reason for hot fitting a shoe is to seat the clips of the shoe, it also helps level the foot and shows how the shoe fits the foot

    The use of stocks can be a little controversial - critics typically argue that if a horse is well-trained and the owner works with a horse’s feet, stocks aren’t necessary. I know there are many draft hitches in the country that are shod without the use of stocks. However, many drafts are still shod in stocks, and when used correctly, they’re a valuable tool that saves a lot of wear and tear on your farrier. (Many farriers refuse to even attempt to shoe drafts without stocks.) The concept is simple: the stocks keep the horse still while providing a place for him to lean. The foot on which the farrier is working is restrained and supported, preventing the farrier from needing to hold up the horse’s leg to work on it. (From my recent personal experience of trying to hold up a draft hoof while applying a poultice pad and vet wrap, I can say first-hand that stocks would have been extremely helpful, if perhaps a little bit of overkill.) Horses need to be trained in the stocks as much as they need to be trained for the farrier, but when the tools are used correctly and horses are well-conditioned to being in the stocks, they make the job of shoeing a one-ton animal a hundred times easier for the farrier.

    If I can contribute, hot shoeing is NOT for leveling the hoof. As JCaizn said, it's very helpfull, if you use 2 clips, it has to be flushed in the wall. Also it burns of bacteria, but the shoe doesn't need to burn the hoof for like 20 seconds. 5 seconds is more than enough to check the shape, leveling and the fit of the shoe. Leveling of the foot is work for the farrier, not hot shoe. Also, the hot shoeing is sort of "cleaner" way to shape the shoe without any bumps, scratches and you can level the SHOE much more easily.

    There is nothing in this process that causes any pain to the animal. The restraining frame is just a precaution so that if the horse spooks, it doesn't accidentally injure the people around it (or itself). The foot is secured to the support post just enough to be firm so the horse doesn't pull away and cause a tool or a hot shoe to land in the wrong place. The parts of the hoof being trimmed off do not contain any nerve endings. Cutting the frog away (the center triangle shaped bit) is like cutting off a callus; it's dead tissue. The hoof itself is like your fingernail. The farrier knows where and how much is safe to remove. This horse is perfectly calm and has obviously been through this process before. He seems more interested in chewing the farrier's shirt. Looks like this horse's front hooves were overgrown a bit, and had chipped out bits on the front and sides that required a shoe to cover those spots to protect them. That's why the shoes have metal parts curved up over those places on the hoof.

    In captivity, even if kept in a pasture, the feet don't wear down like they would in the wild. My horse is a BLM feral mustang and even on the hard clay dirt his feet need trimming at least every three or four months. Also, many hard-working horses need shoes to keep their feet from spitting or wearing down too quickly. A shoeless working horse can go lame very easily. When shoes are worn, a horse needs to be trimmed every 6-8 weeks.

    Actually there are a lot of people who do rode work that are natural and barefoot. A hard hoof is not bred, it's made. The shoe inhibits circulation, hoof mechanism and flexation. The hoof actually flexes, look at shoes after being on a horse, there are grooves from the hoof trying to flexing. The hoof wall isnt designed to bear all the weight. The quarters are naturally designed to be raised and the passive wear being the frog and sole. The toes and heels should bear the majorty of the weight.

    You're absolutely right. Unfortunately, many horses with good feet still must wear shoes because their work requires them to be ridden on hard or rough ground which will cause cracks or over-wear without protection. It's better if the horse can go barefoot but it's not always possible.

    People need to chill out! Do you know how heavy and hard it is to hold and keep up a draft horses feet?! Really fucking heavy! Most farriers wont even touch drafts because of it. The frame is there to stop the horse from moving around and to protect the farrier and others if the horse decides it doesn't want to be there anymore, they tie the legs to the metal frame to hold the horses foot up so they can work on each foot. the hoof wall constantly grows like your own hair or nails, no part of this hurts the horse, its just like cutting your own nails. You shoe hot as the metal is easier to bend to make it shaped right for the horses foot, and they place it on the hoof to mark the hoof so they can tell if the shoe is out a bit on a side of the toe, completely safe. The then dunk the shoe is cold water to keep it in the shape before nailing it on. The horse is calm and the feet are well done by the farrier. Because drafts are often shied away from they don't always get the foot care they need as many farriers say no to doing them, only a handful of people do and then they will have a tight schedule to keep to as it can take up to 3 hours to do all 4 feet on a heavy horse. And before anyone says "you don't know what your on about, your no expert, you are stupid they are cutting the horses feet" I have a 17.1hh Clydesdale mare aged 17yrs old called Claudia, we are lucky enough to have a farrier who makes sure to keep a almost clear day to come and do her feet, trimming and shoeing them all round. We are very lucky to have him and he definitely gets his pay for it as he charges £130 to do her all as he has to get the shoes in and nails in from a separate company.

    BlackMountain150 Very true indeed! I don't know where you're from but I'm from Belgium and have two (not heavy) horses. Either way practicly every farier will do a draft horse here - since we have many drafts (practicly all Belgian draft horses) - as long as the farmer/owner has a special case like in the video to put them in.

    well they make the shoe hot, to form it. Then they place it still hot onto the hoof. It burns the hoof but the horse doesn't feel it.This burns away any impurities under the shoe and shows the farrier where to cut the hoof away for the clips on the shoe.

  • @genevievegauss2638
    @genevievegauss263810 жыл бұрын

    Actually, they're not "burning away" anything. The shoe is heated so it can be formed and fitted to the hoof. The hoof is shaped by trimming, not burning. When the hot shoe touches the hoof it does burn the hoof material a bit but not enough to cause any erosion. The purpose of putting the shoe to the hoof is to see if the shoe is right shape yet. If the farrier wants to change the hoof shape s/he has to do it with nippers and a rasp.

    @drjohnson98 there is nothing dangerous about the hot shoe. It DOES smell horrible but it doesn't hurt the horse. I've talked to a ferrier who used both cold and warm shoeing about the pros and cons, the only thing was the smell vs. having to hit the shoe harder to shape it. I hope you understand what I mean (I'm from Sweden and can't really come up with perfect translations)

    (cont.) A working horse being ridden or driven daily on pavement or other hard or rugged ground must have shoes or their feet will split or wear down until the sensitive tissue is exposed. Have you ever split a finger or toe nail? If you have then you know how painful it is. Now imagine having to bear weight on it. Or walk on it. Or run on it. While wearing a 20 lb backpack. On gravel. And that's why horses wear shoes.

  • @Oakleaf700
    @Oakleaf70011 жыл бұрын

    I can see the utter sense in barefoot horses, and yes, I have noticed the shiny ''polished'' lines on the inner plane of shoe that touches the hoof. Some East european shoes have terrible high ''heels'' that must surely throw the foot off balance-the same heels are found on ancient [200 yrs] shoes here. Roads were never meant for horses, and are an unnatural environment- and a rider adds weight, which was probably why shoes were invented.

    I hear a lot of grumping about this farrier job, but it's odd to me that living in the states (after growing up in Belgium and having well-trained traditional European farriers who actually do smithing), I am finding it difficult to find a farrier that 1) isn't afraid to do drafts, and 2) that doesn't use pre-made manufactured shoes. I wish could find one of these 'experts' around here who knows so much, does great work and who can smith shoes--let alone one who doesn't charge CA prices

    What is the benefit of hot shoeing a horse as opposed to the shoe not hot? Does the hot shoe help with the infection?

    the travaille is a really common way to use with a heavy draft horse.. they are used to it, and from my experience, a big draft horse usually finds it more comfortable to lay his hoof on the frame. and also, do you know how heavy his foot is ? if he couldn't use that he wouldn't even last 2 years as a farrier because his back would just be shattered.

    All my life I've seen draft horses shoed like this. There is nothing wrong with it. The horses don't mind being tied up or the hot iron. It's tradition, done for ages. Obviously the draft doesn't mind. The travaille(or whatever the english word is) makes it easier for a farrier to do multiply horses in a day. But I do agree that the horse should have gone to the farrier sooner.

    Are most draft horses restrained like this due to their sheer size? I've noticed your normal riding horses (like American Quarter) has the farrier just leaning against the butt with its foot between his legs.

    The stock is most commonly used in Europe, because the draft horse is so damn large. Its to protect both the horse and the farrier. The farrier doesnt have to break its back trying to lift the leg and the horse can still 'rest' its leg on the stock.

    It is actually called, Hot Seating. It does not hurt the horse at all. Imagine a massively thick and super dense fingernail. Same stuff as hair hence the nasty smell.

    I think its funny that people are flipping out over them tieing the horses hoof up to the bar. Id like to see you tie to hold that heavy foot up for an extended period of time while bent over.

    This looked like a planned demonstration. The horse was good and relaxed. A demonstration will take longer because you are showing and explaining to general audience. Different knifing used here, everything else the same. I do notice that the hot shoe was burned in for longer than I would be comfortable with. I know what and why its for, but I have seen hooves destroyed by excessive hot shoe burning. Dries them out, more cracking, hard to keep shoes on, brittle. Takes a year for full hoof grow back. Otherwise, good job. People realize, these draft horse shoes can be the size of a full dinner plate. The shoe can weight almost 5lbs itself. Combine that with the weight of the horses leg, shoe, and the added weight of the horse leaning on you, your back won't last long. Those drafts will lean lazily on you so you almost can't get out from under them. The stocks are necessary when you have them. How long do you think you can hold all that moving weight up and still nail that heavy shoe on correctly? Don't knock it till you try it.
