Shoei X-14 Helmet Review
www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sh...
The Shoei X-14 Helmet is the latest, top-of-the-line offering go-fast motorcycle helmets for professional riders and ardent track day enthusiasts. Crafted to exacting specifications that set it apart in the world of high-end race helmets, the X-14 stands at the front of the pack when it comes to premium quality and precision performance. The aerodynamically optimized outer shell is one of the smallest and lightest in the industry for more stable riding in a deep tuck. At the same time, features such as a max-flow ventilation system and 3D Max-Dry interior work to provide a comfortable experience within the helmet itself. Designed specifically for the leaders of the pack, the X14 from Shoei is an apex juggernaut that will firmly hold its place at the top of the podium for years to come.

    I am currently using X12, rocking on it every single day since 2012. Had been commuting with it, the canyon with it, doing multiple track day with it and I have to say it is the best 700USD I have ever spend for motorcycle gear. I feel like the helmet is a special design just for me, it fit me so well since the beginning until now. Can wait to touch my hand on the new X14 and dreaming of swapping out my X12 as well. Great job, great review Revzilla.

    Thanks Anthony, your the best reviewer. I've done 12k miles in an X-12 with stock pads and it, for me, is the best helmet I've ever ridden in. Never noticed the visibility issue when maxing out my blade. The only issue with the X-12, I found, was the spring that seals the visor relax after about 6k miles which lets is a wee breeze at speed and it really needs the air mask to get the best from the anti fog in all weathers. Compared with the X-14, the X-12 has better ventilation over the top of the head but the cheek vents in the X-14 really do work well, maybe too well, especially when I go beardless. Much prefer the visor latch on the X-12; the vents are so good I ride with it locked all the time. The difference in buffeting between the two is somewhat noticeable but really only after about 150mph but then again the X-12 was so much better than anything I had before that I never noticed what buffeting it did have. In the end I never bought one, only tried it for a weekend, I preferred the X-12. There's still life in her and I really didn't like the current range of colour schemes. In my opinion, if you find this helmet fits your head then the X-14 is the one to get.

    City riding with even an empty backpack I feel a lot of buffeting the side to side swing catches air weird in the upright. 3/4, full tuck or in a race suit this thing is solid best way to describe it with track or canyon riding is I forget it’s on my head. The cheek vent isn’t enough to feel the breeze but it’s enough to not sweat kinda just don’t notice it which is better than noticing heat. Also if you ever debated the transition lens do it it’s amazing been riding with it for a good amount of time now

    just bought this helmet and simply the best helmet i ever put on. it,s so comfortable and flow a ton of air to the helmet. i live in indonesia which hot as hell but i still can feela breeze of air flowing inside the helmet. compare to my other helmet (corsa r, corsair x, rpha 11, x802rr) X14 beat them all for both comfort and ventilation. my only complain is the cheekpad are a bit loose for me. it,s not as snug as i want it to be

    Awesome review! I'm seriously looking into the X14 in a solid color to replace my EXO R2000 I purchased 3 years ago. I'm just curious/concerned about fitment from a size point of view compared to the X12. I tried on and walked around in a Medium X12 and I had a massive pressure point in the brow area. I tried on a Large and it fit perfectly. According to their size chart I would of been a Medium in the X12 and I'm wondering if it's more of the same in the X14. As a reference, my R2000 is a Medium.

    I ride a 2015 Multistrada 1200s. Sport touring with a sport windscreen. I do a lot of weekend canyon riding as well as thousands of miles of touring. Currently have an RF-1200, but am really thinking of moving up to this. I plan on doing some track days in the future with the multi haha. I love the black/red color scheme and the looks and features of this new helmet. Is it too much for me though? Is it going to drive me crazy sitting in an upright position for thousands of miles? Appreciate the help

  • @RevZilla

    @RevZilla

    8 жыл бұрын

    +CaptainBeard714 Frankly, you're probably better off with your RF-1200 for touring. The RF-1200 is even a great track helmet, but it really shines as an all-around helmet. The X-14 is a bit heavier and really intended for the 3/4 to full-tuck racing position. It won't be that great for the Multistrada. -DrewZilla

    Sure, but that doesn't give the whole picture of field of view. What really matters is where your eyes are in relation to the edges of the eyeport. All three have a similarly tall and wide field of view, but the Bells have notches in the lower corners to extend visibility for head checks a bit more (Both Bells use the same "Panovision" Face Shield). -DrewZilla

  • @RevZilla

    @RevZilla

    7 жыл бұрын

    No, it isn't intended for auto racing, and while it's Snell-rated, that's the Snell _motorcycle_ standard. There is a separate Snell safety standard for auto racing helmets, and I know many racing organizations require Snell Auto-rated helmets. If your racing organization allows this helmet, though, then it would be fine. The RF-1200 would be better for upright to 3/4 riding though. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/shoei-rf-1200-helmets

    Don’t understand how SHOEI still not using any slip plane or multi density materials like MIPS or Bells Flex system. I love the look of the x14 and would have purchased it. I just felt the bell Race Star Flex offered more in terms of safety, and for the same price. Plus, shoei makes you pay $200 for their photochromic visor and Bell gives you one along with a clear…. Unless your racing with an organization that requires an FIM helmet, there is no reason to choose the x14 over the race star.

    Helmets will loosen up a bit, but you should wear a helmet at home or at a store for at least 25-30 minutes. If you get enough pressure for it to feel really uncomfortable or give a headache, then you might want to get a slightly thinner center pad. Luckily, Shoei offers that. It's like going up a 1/4 to 1/2 a size depending on where you need a bit more room. You can swap the front, rear, top, and/or side pads around the crown. See the link below for details. -DrewZilla *bit.ly/3ackJKd

    What size would you suggest for me? With a tape measure per your instructions, I'm right about 59.8cm. With fitted caps, I'd typically wear 7 1/2 when haircut fresh, but pressure accumulates as hair grows so some hats are 7 5/8. My current helmet is an Arai RXQ size XL, feels great still although sometimes feels wobbly? The X14 being a race fit, should I try for the L or would you suggest a XL?

  • @RevZilla

    I would recommend going with the LG. While helmets can be angled for a particular riding position and aerodynamic profile, they aren't meant to be sized up or down. You're right on the money for a LG. Keep in mind, a helmet will always feel snug at first and break in over time! -TeamZilla Chris

    Ok so I've went to a Cycle Gear and tried out a LG. I think my head is more round/neutral than intermediate oval because as soon as I put it on I felt 2 pressure points at the upper temporals. However, all the other head parts felt pretty snug and not overly tight. They don't have an XL but would you suggest I stick to LG and somehow adjust the temporal pads or let it break in? Or should I just go up to an XL?

    That sounds more like a shape compatibility issue rather than size. The most responsible recommendation is to try something like an Arai Corsair X rather than sizing up the X-14. Arai helmets tend to fit rounder heads better. -TeamZilla Chris *www.revzilla.com/arai-corsair-x-helmets

    So: the X-14, the RF-1200, or the GT-Air? I've watched all 3 reviews, and it's hard to decide. :-) I'm riding a CBR1100XX and I'm tall-ish (6'4"). I also wear glasses. I find myself really having to crank my head back to see out my current helmet, and then I'm most of the time looking over the top of my glasses...and being nearsighted, that's no good. I commute about 15 minutes each way 3 to 5 times a week, do aggressive lunch-time and weekend rides, and plan to start doing track days. I don't have dedicated prescription sun glasses; my normal glasses get dark in sunlight...but not behind a UV resistant shield. And...it gets to 105F-110F regularly here. Thoughts?

  • @RevZilla

    @RevZilla

    8 жыл бұрын

    The X-14 will be best for track riding, and you might want to get an additional dark smoke shield for sunny days. You could also get the Shoei Photochromic Transitions shield, which will automatically darken in bright light. For track days, you may want to invest in some contact lenses. That's really the only way we've found to avoid the "looking over glasses" issue. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/shoei-x-14-helmets *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/shoei-cwr-1-photochromic-pinlock-ready-face-shield

    Thanks for the reply! After asking this I continued with my research and found the photochromic face shield, which I would *absolutely* buy if I got the x-14. I really like the idea of contacts for track days...thanks for that tip! I also found the Bell Race Star and Race Star Pro reviews. :-) So next question: same situation, but now: x-14, or Race Star (or Pro)? It seems the Bell's have better visibility, but I'm not sure about how well comms will fit in them...I forgot to mention that I do want comms and am looking into the Fusar comms so I don't have a unit hanging outside my helmet any more. Thoughts? Thanks!

    I too was looking at the Bell Star but when I tried both of these helmets on in the store I found that the Bell's LG size was REALLY tight and the XL was a little loose (on my head anyway). The X-14, meanwhile, fits absolutely perfectly* and is very comfortable (the Bell is comfortable once on but getting it on was a chore). Ended up going for the X-14 which is a little more money than the Star but its a fantastic helmet overall. The best thing is the ventilation and the noise levels which are very high and very low respectively! *One note on size, the helmet fits perfectly but I have noticed at highway speeds that it tends to brush up against my nose which is annoying. Usually I can just adjust it slightly down so that my nose will go over the top of the chin bar in this situation but just thought I'd point it out...

    +XZINO911X Yes, it will work the other way as well. The CWR shields on both the RF-1200 and X-14 us the same QR-E Base plate system. The only difference other than the tear-off posts is the fact that it is a Flat shield that comes as standard on the X-14 to ensure a cleaner fit for the tear-offs once installed.

    +Pillokun We agree that the X-12 (your X-Spirit II) was known to be quite loud. The same was true of the RF-1100 (your XR-1100). The RF-1200/NXR shows that Shoei listened and really made it quieter than its predecessor, and the same is true of the X-14. We really found it to be quieter than the X-12.
