Shoei just released the RF-1400, their update to the legendary RF-1200. How does the new lid stack up against the classic 1200? And how noticeable are the improvements? Brandon takes the RF-1400 for a ride to see for himself.

    I wear glasses. A thought: you can jam thicker framed sunglasses into almost any helmet. It's a lot harder to get thin framed seeing-eye glasses, which are a lot more common now, into a helmet. Thank you for the reviews

    I bought a Shoei RF1400 in the summer of 2022. In October 2022, I was hit hard and fast from behind on I-44 between Springfield and Joplin Missouri. The car hit me so fast and so hard... it came right up through the tailpipe, bending the middle of the frame upwards, throwing me skyward and sideways off the highway. I don't know if I was rendered unconscious or not, it happened so fast. I found myself lying a few feet into the grass off the shoulder. My lower body was broken pretty bad (three months later, and I'm just now transitioning from a wheelchair to a walker), but somehow my head and shoulders were not injured! This helmet took a number of impacts, as it had damage in two or three locations (front and back). Somehow, God blessed me that this helmet protected me... I'm writing this review for Shoei and placing it in a number of popular online locations to show my thanks for the RF-1400! And thank you God! Additionally, this helmet was super comfortable and fit my head snug as a bug in a rug! (P.S. Don't ride your motorcycle on highways at night)

    I think a lot of people don’t realize why there is a center lock. It is to provide equal tension to the face shield across the seal as opposed to lopsided tension. Allows for a cleaner and tighter seal. They made some big strides with this face shield over the 1200 it seems. And I think that goes under appreciated. Now if they just have a transition shield for this helmet, it is a total win for me.

    They do offer a transition shield. I used it over the 2023 season. It adjusts quickly. My only knock is that it doesn’t get as dark as I’d like it to, or as dark as a dark smoke shield for example, in direct sunlight. But if I’m riding into afternoon sun I put sunglasses on.

  • @elindenstein
    @elindenstein Жыл бұрын

    Just picked this up this morning, coming from an RF-SR. I think it's a very similar feeling helmet to the SR. I was a little disappointed with the venting of this helmet; the brow vent is really nice on the 1200 and the Hornet, so kind of a bummer that it isn't in there. The inside fit is really plush and premium-feeling. I tried on Scorpion's carbon helmet, the AGV K6, etc - nothing felt more like putting my head between two pillows quite like the Shoei. It seems like maybe this helmet isn't as impressive for a sport touring and ADV rider like myself, because my head tilted downward just a bit makes the helmet vent a lot better; upright riding position doesn't yield as impressive of results. But overall, I think of this as an $850 (I got the transition shield too) investment that can be spread out over 4-5 years.. Basically the safest helmet I could buy for about $200/year.

    How well do you think the new RF1400 will work on the track? How well do you think it will work for club level racing? I see it has some more vertical visibility as well?...think Shoei is trying to bridge the gap between the 1200 and the X-14 a little bit? Do you think a more track oriented helmet such as the X-14 or Bell Race Star would be better for a club racer/advanced level track riding or will the Rf1400 do a good enough visibility/ventilation job at a more budget friendly price?

  • @jamest5149

    You cannot feel 3 ounces… you can swap a lid for one that is 1/2 pound difference and not feel it while wearing it, probably would notice a full pound heavier. You will changes in feel from wind resistance and buffeting and any ‘pulling’,when looking around. So adding 3 ounces to make the helmet safer and quieter is a great trade off.

But most say the 1200 is very quiet, depends on a person's headshape. Fit and finish on Shoei's are too notch and the wind resistance on the 1200 is amazing, I'm sure the 1400 would be as well.

    For me, the RF-1400 was on par with the latest lids out there that utilize a pin-lock insert. It can fog a bit right in the center on the lower part of the shield and build up around that a bit but it generally never fogs the entire shield. The only time I've experienced fogging to be an issue, even with a pin-lock, is when it's cold and rainy. Even then I've never had the entire shield fog up on me but I will crack the shield open from time to time to clear any fogging that was present. If you've been using an older Shoei, I think you'll enjoy the latest pin-lock system. Cheers! -Brandon

    Definitely a couple of months. Shoei focused on getting the helmet to market as the first priority during COVID and with factory shutdowns. Also, I'm sure they don't want to run into any issues with the RF-1400 transition shield like they did with the RF-1200's launch. The shield was delayed for nearly 2 years after being announced bc of issues. They worked all the issues out, but I'm sure it made them more cautious.

You should check ears area from the bottom if you can easily touch your ears with the finger if yes this mean that shape of the cheekpads are not for you and air was comed from the bottom to yours ears and make noise buffering.

    Hey Brendan. I have an RF-1400 in size 3XL, and I really need the optional thicker interior liner. Shoei customer support tells me I have to get it from a dealer, but my local dealers are telling me it's out of stock and not available to order. I haven't found it for sale on the internet, and I get the sense that most web sellers don't understand the part or never added it to their catalog. Can RevZilla order that part for me? I think the PN is simply "XXL9". If not, what am I supposed to do? I bought one of the finest, most expensive helmets on the market and I'm feeling like I made a mistake because Shoei is not supporting the product.

  • @patrickmchugh8039

    @patrickmchugh8039

    11 ай бұрын

    Sorry - I wanted to hop on a call with some of Shoei's US reps to make sure I had the right answer for you before replying. I checked and confirmed that there does not appear to be any thinner liner for the 3XL in the RF-1400. Every list from Shoei (in the owners manual on their site, as well as the replacement pads sizing charts etc) stop at the 2XL. So I did some digging and the 3XL only has the interior that comes with it. The XXL9 you referenced is the thicker size for the 2XL if you wanted to make it tighter, since it comes with the XXL5 already installed (numbers indicate mm thickness, same with the cheek pads). According to their teams here in the US, there isn't a replacement liner that would work with your size unfortunately. Most liners break in about 10-15% after about 20 hours of use, but idk if that will help at all. A smaller liner might not help with hotspots either, if the shell's internal shape just isn't right for your shape though. Again, not saying that is what your experiencing - but just throwing all the info / tips I have out there.

    I have this helmet in the matt blue. I have ~8 Shoei lids, several Arai, Bell, HJC...most since 2008. This is the worst paint I've seen, on any of them. It is soft, and seems to get marks in the paint if you look at it sideways. I don't remember how my glasses fit in the RF1400, but my Neotec II, X14 and J Cruise all lift my Oakley frames up off of my nose. If Shoei had fixed this common problem, I wouldn't have just ordered another Arai.
