I'm not sure... I have made peace with the fact that I cannot consume all music/bands I might like "at the right time". So there might be more people like me, that are just happy to discover brilliant songs of one of their many interests. Might be that I could catch a gig in nearby, might also be, that the band has long surpassed. Too bad in the latter case, but it's like that.
Shoegaze/Dreampop always evokes that comfortable melancholy nostalgia
The Cure's Lol Tolhurst: 'Goth is about being in love with the melancholy beauty of existence' This is a great soundtrack for that concept.
I am 52 and I will never grow out of dream pop/shoegaze or whatever you want to call it. Going to see the best band ever on 10/6 in Denver. Slowdive! Great mix.

i hear so much of Cocteau Twins in so many of these pieces of music. i feel blessed that i went through my teenage years when C.T's were first appearing and at their height. Their legacy in music is massive. We owe John Peel a huge debt for bringing them to our attention as we do for so many bands

Glad you mentioned the late great John Peel. He should have been awarded a professorship, because he probably educated more people about music than any number of universities. To our lasting pleasure. He certainly added a lot to the sum total of human happiness.

Indeed! Got into CT around '82 and even saw them live in 85! That truly was the best musical era of modern times, not just for goth/sg, but for all the creative genres music of that decade.

Imagine telling someone who's super into MBV and Slowdive in the early '90s that 30 years later this sound is gonna come back, but it's gonna be almost seamlessly blended not just with mid-'80s 4AD Records-type stuff but also things that sound like a less bombastic version of Pink Floyd's "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason"...

It seems to be more of an ethos than a genre. The songs in this mix fit together seamlessly, but I would have a hard time writing a definition for "Shoegaze" music.
