Shoe and Laundry Storage Bench

At our carport door, we have our laundry room and storage for things that we use when going outdoors like shoes, coats and backpacks. It was not very well organized. The project is to take down the existing upper cabinets and build a storage system for the outdoor things and the laundry. The storage system consists of a horizontal piece with shoe storage inside and a bench on top, and a vertical piece with adjustable shelves for laundry storage. The cabinets are made from prefinished birch plywood and the bench is oak.

The Russian doll animation and the shoes walking away are the little things that make me watch every single one of your videos as soon as they pop up in my feed. Each video is WAY more than just 15 minutes of somebody cutting and gluing wood. Genius.

When I was a kid, I lived for shows like this old house, and the instructional VHS that came with our Kirby G4. This guy is talented in so many more ways than just woodworking. His videography skills are on point, editing/stop motion is amazing. Even had a sense of humor! Fascinating channel - can't wait to watch more!

Thanks Frank. Of all the woodworking videos on KZread yours motivate me the most to get out in the shop and make something. I think it is the way you show how you attacked the build instead of trying to teach me how to build it your way. It is funny to me that kids shoe storage is the exact problem our house is having to deal with this week. Must be a common thing in households everywhere.

haha! Build around an electrical outlet and water line! My philosophy is that electricity isn't a hobby. I totally understand, but man--our projects will come out better if we fix the mechanical problems first, like you did with the smooth wall surface. You're putting the sexy stuff over what needs to be fixed which is to bring that duplex electrical receptacle out flush with your cabinet. Just my opinion. Beautiful work as always and even though you're not too keen on that high shine for the bench, I think it looks amazing.

If you don't like the shine of your finish, you can use fine steel wool. You'll get a flat finish. For a semi-gloss finish, use steel wool, then wax. I use carnauba wax, but bees wax works although. I tried flat or semi-gloss finishes, but there is 2 thing I don't like about it. You have to use gloss finish for the first coats, and the semi-gloss or flat finish only on the last coat. And secondly, they put some flattening agent in the finish, and I guess I tend to push the flattening agent away as I'm brushing, so I get an aneven "flatness". That's why I like the steel wool trick better. Thanks for the many videos you make. I just dicovered you channel and it's one of my favorite.
