Shockingly Thrifty Antiques & Vintage at Community Garage Sales!

We've waited all year for this weekend of antique and vintage hunting at two annual community wide sales in Florida! Anything could find its way to these, and there's much more than just pretty porcelain and sparkly glass to consider.
Beyond the vintage kitchen and decor buys-a Pyrex Tulip bowl for $5, Neil the Frog canisters for $10, Holt Howard candle climbers for $1-we find some things that are really fun but "just not right"! Naughty novelties, bawdy bar songs, and a last-minute find on wardrobe challenged head vases (a $75 value for just $2!) make this an excursion of unseemly delights.
Community sales give the chance for thrift store prices on fresh finds from people's attics and garages, and we're lucky to have two good ones to share here. Add in an impromptu garage sale that no one knows about, and we're raking in the goodies, at prices that make it worth digging through every box!

Dear George , The Redd Foxx album brought back memories. My mother in law caught my husband and I listening to her album and chewed us out . We were adults with a child and she thought we were too young, I think she was embarrassed . That was one of the albums considered " blue" . The actress who played Aunt Ester Luella Parsons on the Redd Foxx show had albums to that were very blue. She did a skit called Pipe Laying Dan that was more than P.G. Those comedians played the Chicken Circuit back in the day. I love collecting them and they are still raw comedy , even today . 😂

I found all 4 Neil the frog canisters along with the creamer, covered sugar, napkin holder and two of the large spice shakers at a church thrift store. The whole set was priced at $25 and I couldn't get them in my cart fast enough! When I went to check out they told me housewares were half off! I really only wanted the canisters for myself so I sold the other pieces for $45 in about a week. Basically got paid to have my childhood dream kitchen items 🤣

I'd have investigated the blue and orange vases at about the 13:00 mark. Chinese maybe, but the colors were great. Those clear glass candlesticks are great for photographing jewelry. The candle cups are good for holding rings upright, or earrings. Some of them have flat spots for bangles. They're vintage and as clear glass don't get in the way of what someone is supposed to look at. They also usually go for cheap these days.

The glass rabbit is absolutely from Sweden. But the company was called FM not EM. Spelled out it's Färe Marcolin Konstglas (art glass). Founded by the two brothers Josef and Benito Marcolin who came to Sweden in the 1950's from Murano Italy, and later on started this art glass company. :-)

I think all the threads are silk and very delicate and subject to moths and such. The two I have are slightly damaged. But they are so beautiful. I found the horse first - in a haunted hoarder house. Then a month or so later I found the elephant at a Savers in a donated elephant collection. Crazy Lamp Lady has a huge bull. I just think they are so Boho looking - which is my style completely. I call it Eclectic Boho. I am a believer that you can never say "it doesn't fit my decor" - anything can fit if you love it as long as you aren't sticking to a certain style. I am NOT a fan of "living room or bedroom sets" - and the people I design for appreciate that. A room should be a conversation piece - wherever you look. I am looking for more of those Rajastans.

George, where do those oval shaped aluminum measuring spoons come from ? My Mother & Grandmothers had those. Wondered if they came from a store, GreenStamps or something boxtops where saved for. I'm 62, an they where before me.

I assumed they were just commonplace at the local grocer's but I'm not positive

Some of that stuff, not my taste, but I'm collecting for me not to sell. I have to remember that. I need to go through my mom's stuff. I know there are mcm items. But hard for me to sell her stuff, since she is not alive. When I retire I want to work at an antique store in Holly MI maybe. I've been around antiques with my mom since I was 7 in the 60s.

I figure it's not everyone's nostalgia, depends how and where you sell...plus they are really flimsy and have to be used with caution!

I picked up a older makeup case similar to one you showed at 17:30. It's visually clean but smells like foundation or some other product was left open in it for an extended period of time. Any tips how to remove the odor?

I saw you pick up the faux boat propeller. How often do you sell real ones? I'm assuming the material matters? (Like brass).

Ha ha - it was Ted Williams' head - and I think his daughters got custody of it and had it buried with hs body. Mickey Mantle is buried in a beautiful crypt in Dallas - I am friends with his son.

@@TheAntiqueNomad That made me giggle actually. Mickey's son David did a voice in an animated movie I worked on and we actually got to spend time together at the red carpet in NYC, but I had known him for years online. Very nice man - looks like his dad. The story of Ted's head is pretty horrific. First of all, he was supposed to be frozen whole. The head was cut off in error. There is a crack in the head and there was a tuna can that was used as a pedestal frozen to it and they used a hammer to knock it off, missed and hit the head straight on. Parts flew across the room. His daughter gave up trying to get it back - I just looked that up. Horrific story but one that I actually used in a bizarro short story once which I sold to some anthology for a nice chunk of change. Seriously sometimes you cannot make stuff up.

Does anyone actually use perfume bottles? Perfume today comes in beautiful bottles that are unique to the brand of perfume. So there is really no reason to transfer it to another bottle. I have my mother's collection but they just sit on a shelf empty.

I do great with Yearbooks. 5:00 Usually pick them up for $3.00 and sell them for $29.99 to $39.99 (ships Media Mail $5.00 thus "free shipping" is not outta the question) . I charge higher if they are NOT SIGNED. Sadly , the older ones from the 1940s and 1950s do not sell as well as the 1970s and 1980s now . Even creeping into the early 1990s . If you have a chance: LOOK at a contemporary High School Yearbook; they look HORRIBLE , poorly laid out , all in color , and lousy portrait photos. And the photos are too small . One thing that they do that is interesting is, they now dedicate 5 or 10 pages to "currently going on this year" in news and pop culture -- oh the poor kids of the past 3 years -- your poor lives in the shadow of a train wreck . 😔
