When I started medical school in 1995, we were taught that one in four people were likely to develop cancer in their lifetime. Today, that statistic has changed to one in two - a rapid rise that can’t be explained by genetics. But if our modern diet and lifestyles are the cause, we have more control than we might think.
That’s the message my guest, Professor Thomas Seyfried, has worked tirelessly to prove and communicate over his four decades as a cancer researcher. Professor Seyfried is a professor of biology, genetics and biochemistry at Boston College, Massachusetts, and author of more than 150 peer-reviewed publications, as well as the 2012 book Cancer As A Metabolic Disease.
Through his research, and in this conversation, he sets out to explain how it’s a malfunction in our mitochondria - the energy powerhouses in each of our cells - that’s at the root of every cancer he’s studied. Normal-functioning mitochondria, he explains, use oxygen to make energy. In cancer, this process is disrupted. Cancer cells cannot use oxygen, so they fall back on a primitive form of energy creation known as fermentation.
It follows then, explains Professor Seyfried, that if we can somehow stop this fermentation process, then cancer cells will die. Cancer uses glucose and glutamine to fuel fermentation. While we don’t want to block glutamine, as it has other uses in the body, we can drastically lower our glucose levels to stop driving cancer growth.
We discuss some of the ways in which we can start doing this - for example, using specific low-carb diets and nutritional ketosis. Professor Seyfried also talks us through his ground-breaking ‘metabolic therapy’ protocols for treating cancer - sometimes, alongside conventional treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Professor Seyfried has spent decades researching and proving a metabolic cause for this devastating disease. This a compelling and optimistic conversation, packed with actions we can all take to reduce our risk not just of cancer, but all the chronic conditions driven by metabolic disruption.
CAUTION: This podcast discusses ketogenic diets and water-only fasting. Always consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before making any drastic changes to your diet or before going for prolonged periods without eating.

My 80 years old brother was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma in the pancreas in April 2023. I am a not practitioner MD and when I saw this professor's explaining the metabolic approach of cancer, it made perfectly sense to me. I suggested my brother NOT to take radio nor chemotherapy and follow professor Seyfriedt instructions + turmeric + berberine. In August 2023 he took a new PET and the cancer was gone. His doctor couldn't believe the result of the control PET and ordered to review the biopsy from April believing there was a mistake in the biopsy report and that it has not been a Ca, but a pancreatitis. The review of the biopsy confirmed it was an adenocarcinoma. Many many thanks Dr. Seyfried 🙏

In mouse studies, fasting greatly extends lifespan and the main mechanisms is preventing cancer! Some benefits of doing occasional extended fasting: High blood pressure is lowered to normal levels very quickly while fasting. Fibrosis/scarring is reversed over time, including in the heart and lungs. Vitamin D plasma levels are increased as fasting improves metabolic health, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy. Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of bacteria, plaques and viruses by the immune system. It will also remove any 'foreign material' like spikes that are not supposed to be there. Whether natural or unnatural in origin.. Blood sugar and insulin are lowered when fasting, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job. Fasting increases nitric oxide release. Fasting restores NAD+ to healthy levels. Blood clotting is reduced and blood clots and arterial plaque are reabsorbed into the body. Fasts from 36-96 h increase metabolic rate due to norepinephrine release! Telomeres are lengthened and fasting also increases anti-aging Yamanaka factors. After 72 hours or more fasted, your body recycles up to 1/3 of all immune bodies, rejuvenating your entire immune system. This helps prevent the onset of new autoimmune conditions, which develop through a leaky gut and damaged immune system. Fasting can help with MS, Depression, BPD, Autism and seizures. Thymus is regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system. The thymus also plays a vital role in fighting cancer. Weight loss from daily caloric restriction has 1/4 to 1/3 of the weight lost as lean tissue while many studies show fat loss from 36 h fasts without losing any lean tissue! The obese will lose extra tissue like loose skin while fasting, but the skinny or frail will have increased growth hormone release than the obese, which helps to make more lean tissue and reduce frailness. When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell required for viruses to replicate. The hunger hormone ghrelin also lowers with extended fasting and rises from dieting. What breaks a fast? Anything with protein or carbohydrates in it will break a fast. Most teas and herbs are OK. Most supplements and meds will either break ketosis directly or contain a filler that will. Many meds are dangerous to take while fasting. Does fasting lower testosterone? No, it raises it when the fast is broken by increasing lutenizing hormone. Fasting also increases insulin sensitivity, which helps with muscle building. Fasts of 36-96 will not affect short term female fertility or affect menstrual cycle. They also may increase long term fertility, especially in women with PCOS. Fasting reduces pain and anxiety by stimulating the endocannabinoid system in a similar way to CBD oil. One day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again! This reduces leptin resistance, which impairs immune function. Stomach acid is reduced over time while fasting and can allow for the healing of treatment resistant ulcers. Some patients may need continued acid reduction medication while fasting. Does the body preferentially prefer glucose as a fuel? No. Except for brief periods of very intense exercise, your body mainly burns fats in the form of free fatty acids. Your brain also prefers to burn ketones at a rate of around 2.5 to 1 when they are available in equal quantity to glucose. Fasting stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle foreign matter such as viruses and kill cancerous and senescent cells Lowering insulin via fasting virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body. It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism, fighting infection and cancer prevention! Fasting releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth. This can help a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers. When not in ketosis, the brain can only burn carbohydrate, which produces a great deal of damaging ROS the brain has to deal with. When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells, destroying them. Senescent cells are responsible for many of the effects of aging and are a root cause of the development of cancer. A fasting mimicking diet for 3-5 days in a row also provides many of the same benefits as water fasting. FMD usually has 200-800 calories, under 18 g of protein and extremely low carbs. Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia. They also help with dementia and many other issues even if you take them while not fasting! Glycine and trimethylglycine can also be useful supplements while fasting that won't break ketosis and have many benefits. Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or certain forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness or tremors, then simply break the fast and seek advice. I've just breaked my 72 hrs fast now. I run 72s rolling fasts. In january i had a diagnose for a very rare lymphoma. 8 cm tumor, not operable with surgery. Doctors were optimistic, but they gave me NO therapy in that moment (4 months of diagnostic tests to confirm the diagnose and exclude other forms of cancers). I went on a fasting cycle since january. When the tumor was 6 cm - on april - my oncologist whispered to me: "Keep fasting". Now my tumor is 4,5 cm of maximum lenght, less than 1 cm in thickness (it's a plaque). I'm waiting to talk with my oncologist for a new reasessment. Fasting is a precious skill but it has some dangers if you go on to far. 3 things are to avoid for very long fastings or repeteated fasting cycles: - hyponatremia, that is salt deficiency DURING the fast; TAKE your SALT if your fasting is a long one. - refeeding syndrome, that is a reaction when you BREAK a very long fasting, and it is potentially letal; eat very tiny meals after the end of a very long fasting, take potassium, phosporous, magnesium and vit. B1. Refeeding syndrome is the cause of death for people who do very long fastings with no experience. It causes a strong electrolyte imbalance. - Vitamin and mineral deficiencies. I'm in the fasting thing since 2014. I was obese, now i'm very fit. Still i had to learn A LOT about vitamins and minerals, ad i've supplemented every time was necessary due to the fasting cycles. I had deficiencies with vitamin A and C (yes, the scurvy), with zinc, potassium, iron, and yes, i've been SALT deficient (non optimal, salt deficiency is soon letal) for months in the last years. Now i've eaten 3,5 cm of my lymphoma in 8 months, and i'm going to fast till the end of it. To be diagnosed with cancer at 43 is an HARD TIME. BUT seems that the hunger game is a lot harder for the tumor. [Docs do not know the WHY i had a rare form of lymphoma: it's probably due to some form of intoxications (metal? chemicals?). My long term fasting regimen could not prevent this thing, with autophagy, AND probably my body had not the proper nutritional state to fight the cancer in the first place - i was deficient in vit. C and A last year, when the cancer came)]

Guy TENENBAUM's case about cancer and his protocol : - a low-carb diet outside the fasting period (total elimination of carbohydrates/sugars) and eating OMAD (One Meal A Day) crucifers, garlic, onions, avocados, walnuts/almonds, olive oil and oily fish to avoid losing too much weight (avoid meat and cheese) - taking specific food supplements that Guy TENENBAUM has called TCC (The Cancer Cure) which correspond to his 5 essentials, with the dosage he took: * High-dose melatonin 30 mgr before going to bed (Phycocyanine or Lithotamne, but the most powerful would be melatonin): inhibition of SCOT (to use pure phycocyanine and lithotamne to increase the volume of SCOT inhibitors in addition to melatonin) * Allicin (either as a 2400 mg quality concentrated pill, or with crushed raw garlic): up/down stream of SCOT * Matcha green tea (with turmeric and ginger): up/down stream of SCOT * Metabolic treatment (metabloc): Alpha Lipoic Acid (or Sodium R Lipoate, 600mg 3 times a day, 1800mg in total) + Garcinia Cambodgia (Hydroxycitric Acid, 600mg 3 times a day, 1800mg in total) + CoQ10 (the transporter, 100mg morning noon evening) * Omega 3 in a DHA - EPA ratio (500mg DHA/200mg EPA): to fight keto paradox during ketogenic diet or the fasting phase * Bromelain (850mg to 5000 GDU) and Quercetin (500mg) for nodules * Berberine and Curcumin to block additional metabolic pathways - Alkalinise the body with a combination of baking soda and cider vinegar - if the body allows it: long fasting then the following month by short fasting and intermittent fasting + taking nutrients and minerals to avoid deficiencies (vitamin D3, Magnesium Bisglycinate and multivitamins)

When I was a child my mother would buy large packs of sugar. I would add copious amounts to my breakfast cereal. I just loved sugar. But there were some major downsides to eating sugar, decayed teeth, acne and cost. So my father banned sugar and sweets and 'candy water'. So I had to eat the same foods my dad ate; meat, eggs, and fresh vegetables and drink the same liquids eg tea and water. When the experts (confectionary industry) were saying at the time 'sugar is good, fat is bad' my dad would say 'That's rubbish, that's their job to say that'. Dad believed sugar was the worst thing you could feed your body.

My friends 26 year old granddaughter recently died of bowel cancer. One died at an early age and another battled it for 25 years before finally succumbing to the disease. However, only one member of the family was ever diagnosed with cancer and he died within two years. So far, and I have known this family for over 30 years, no one else has had any issues with cancer. Something important to note is that they all were born and raised in central Mexico and generally eat a traditional Mexican diet with very little American-style "fast foods".

My daughter was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer at the age of 28, died 3 months ago at 32. I watched and shared with her "Cancer As A metabolic Desease" interview the Dr had with another KZreadr. I don't claim to know why but I was certainly concerned about her nutritional choices and her weight. Her cancer was hormone positive (eastrogen) related ( I wonder about contraceptives) she had deep seated anger and resentment inside. I believe all this culminated into cancer. After she passed I discovered insulin shots in her apartment, she had kept this a secret from me 😢

As a matter of fact, she had decided to dismiss that entirely and wrote a new prescription to increase the current dosage of a pharmaceutical that wasn't working. I tossed her prescriptions and finished my keto goal of 90 days. No issues ever since, I don't take as much as one pain pill, I've even gotten rid of any antihistamines, too. That was right around this time of year, 4 yrs ago...the prescription she gave me did damage my bone marrow, so there's that.

Our body has a tremendous adaptability and healing mechnisms to withstand this longstanding insult. When cancer is recognized, our body is screeming for a change. Poverty is no excuse for poor food choices. But at food banks I still see families choose sugary cereals, drinks, snacks, etc especially for their kids (who are often overweight at a young age). My wife used to be a WIC nutritional counselor, but after making recommendations people would just go home to old habits, including smoking and drinking while pregnant. Its hard to change even if your health and life on the line when your environment continuously triggers unhealthy choices.

This gets back to the ongoing story about the power of Pharma over the treatment of all disease states. Oncologists and other physicians are not being trained in any alternative treatments, they are solely being trained by the pharmaceutical industry who they are beholden to. We saw this in a most glaring way during Covid, so this discussion on cancer and ketogenic diets does not come as a shock either.

00:06 Cancer rates have increased dramatically due to changes in diet and lifestyle. 02:58 Obesity is replacing smoking as the major risk factor for cancer 07:46 Change in diet and lifestyle is responsible for the onset of chronic diseases 10:18 The modern lifestyle and exposure to various chemicals and pollutants pose a significant risk to our health. 14:56 Cancer originates from dysregulated cells caused by various agents and risk factors. 17:31 Disruption of energy metabolism in the mitochondria is a common pathophysiological mechanism in all cancers. 22:07 Cancer cells rely on non-oxidative energy metabolism, known as fermentation. 24:20 Targeting fermentation metabolism and transitioning to non-fermentable fuels can kill tumor cells without toxicity 28:28 Anaerobic exercise generates energy without using oxygen 30:32 Taking action is necessary for change in life. 34:43 Cancer cells survive on fermentation and can be managed by restricting fermentable fuels in the microenvironment 36:44 Genes play a crucial role in cancer development 41:01 Cancer mutations are caused by destabilized growth due to somatic mutations from dysfunctional oxidative phosphorylation. 43:13 Diet and exercise can significantly reduce the risk of developing cancer, even if you have the gene. 47:31 Ketogenic diet is an effective treatment for seizures in children. 49:24 Ketogenic diet shows promise in managing epilepsy and cancer. 52:59 Studying cancer for 40 years without a direct strategy for management 54:52 All types of cancer have commonality in their energy generation process. 59:10 Therapeutic ketosis is beneficial for health and can prevent chronic diseases. 1:01:24 Nutritional ketosis and plant-based diets have both been reported to have positive effects on cancer risk. 1:05:26 Radical changes in diet and lifestyle can lead to remissions of cancer. 1:07:32 Using a ketogenic diet and measuring the glucose ketone index can help manage cancer and achieve metabolic homeostasis 1:11:28 Metabolic therapy should be used at the beginning to eliminate cancer cells 1:13:23 Targeted therapy can be effective in managing cancer, but it needs to be used in conjunction with an understanding of evolutionary biology. 1:17:19 Ketones gradually increase and glucose drops during fasting. 1:19:12 Hyperbaric oxygen combined with ketosis can be used as an alternative to radiation for cancer treatment. 1:23:03 GKI values can be used to determine the effect of different diets on the body. 1:24:46 The treatment protocol for cancer involves a zero carb diet and water-only fasting. 1:28:35 Metabolic therapy is a viable alternative treatment for cancer patients. 1:30:25 Cancer patients want to be active participants in their healthcare. 1:34:37 Radiation and chemotherapy are not effective in treating glioblastoma. 1:36:44 Improving diet and using metabolic therapy can be safer and more effective in treating cancer 1:40:40 Sugar is not a carcinogen but it causes systemic inflammation and contributes to the obesity epidemic. 1:42:42 Access to healthy food and poverty contribute to obesity and related health issues. 1:46:45 Obesity is a major risk factor for cancer. 1:48:40 Reducing cancer risk through exercise and diet 1:52:31 Four common causes of decreased longevity

Too often, stress drives poor choices in nutrition, and this interview helps motivate a behavior change *before* some catastrophic change in my health. Thank you for this in-depth discussion. Dr. Seyfried has motivated me to check out the keto mojo meter, which I blew off because I already have a Ketosis meter and glucose meter. What he describes is a better tool for monitoring staying in ketosis, and I shied away because of the cost. His guidance has helped me understand it will be worth it to switch, given my goal of being more metabolically flexible and having a better understanding of how my body reacts when I stress eat. Thank you for this great interview Dr. Chatterjee. You are saving lives for those of us who cannot afford specialist care or preventative care.

Some European countries take naps in the afternoon. Then they return to work for a short bit. The USA slaves are indeed “stressed out”

You can diet and exercise all day everyday. Something will eventually get you. If it's not Cancer. It's something else. My grandfather was a health nut. My grandma ate sugar drank Pepsi everyday. Ate candy. Lived 10 years longer.

This was so good. Thank you both so much. I met my current doctor about five years ago when I got in touch because I wanted to make sure I had everything in place for MAID when the time came. We did the groundwork and lucky for me I am so old no medical interventions or treatments were considered BUT I got serious about nutrition and exercise, meditation, quit sugar, took up a couple of different breathing practices and hey, I just keep feeling better but I do keep getting older so, a couple of months from 80 I'm just enjoying the day. Enjoyed this. Thanks again.

Do you use red light therapy? It is just great! I hope you continue an active & healthy life. If you should ever have health issues, please look into stem cell therapy.

@@miaash3870 No, but thank you. What I will continue to do is look after myself, enjoy the days I have and be just fine with the inevitability of death. Yikes, the 'D' word.

I am one subject away from completing my graduate diploma in lifestyle medicine. I was a nurse but saw that our healthcare system was more of a sickness management system. I am currently looking for a scholarship and funding to do my phD in LM focusing on families and LM interventions. I went plant based in 1981 and am on no medications nor have any health issues.

This information is vital for me as I have recently been diagnosed with eye cancer. I considered myself healthy with a vegetarian diet eating organic when possible and a Mediterranean diet. I believe that I consumed too much starch because of a sweet tooth. This condition may well have bee sparked by prednisone medication prescribed by my kidney transplant protocol.
