Datsun 1600 SSS, one of the best cars ever made
Those little Datsuns were phenomenal cars! I had one when I was a boy racer, and these cars cemented Datsun's reputation in South Africa - national champs a couple of times.

The 'SSS' was a giant-slayer. My father and his friend drove one from Windhoek to Keetmanshoop in 3hrs10min. That was in the mid-70's.

They cemented Datsun's reputation here in Australia too 👌 Not a lot of Datsun left in Brendo's one here in the video, it's practically a Silvia wearing a Datsun shell, but it sure is quick.

I owned several here in Canada and 1 when I lived in Australia. I sure miss not owning one

The incredible thing is even with the modern motor it still sounds pretty close to the old L16/18/20 with a cam and DCOE Weber’s. It’s surprising since the engine configuration is quite different (SOHC 8 valve non cross flow vs DOHC 16 valve cross flow), seems like the only similarity is the make (Datsun/Nissan). Are they somehow making their engines still sound the same 50 years later?🤔
gentleman and gentlelady, truly the most awesome video /...bugger is footage i have witnessed. absolutely amazing.
It is just 💪! Cheers from Finland!
Bought my Datto new in july 1971 in Taree NSW. Incredible performance from that 1600 engine, still miss it after 52 years.
What a great steer......and the Datto is on song....brilliant 👍
Amazing roads. Nice to see a 1600 win events even at 50 - Go the senior citizen classic !

Yep we thought that’d get some support. Some of the parts aren’t 50 but the shell might be.
Grew up in the backseat of a couple of Datsun 510s. Owned a few myself and can probably repair one with my eyes closed. Seeing this somehow brings a tear to my eye. Phenomenal.
Congratulations! 16's forevermore...
Great watch and well done on the result team 😎 - Taz.
You know how too dig a corner...Thanx for the nice ride😁
Hats of to you Bulls of steel to race in that event. Cracking little car
Awesome. So great to see, brings back great memories!
This is great! Didn’t even know we had this here, now I have to see it live!
My dad used to be a rally driver in Australia and when he rallied in late 1970 and early 1980 he fell in love with the 1972/3 Datsun 1600
Hell yeah! AWESOME! Real car/Real driver 👍🏻
Sick 510!!! 👍🤙👍🤙👍🤙👍🤙😎😉🥰🥳😁
Had a Datsun 1200 as a first car then a 180B SSS, fitted extractors and a free flowing exhaust. Kept the SU Carbs in tune and she surprised many a V8 owner from the green light.
Amazing car, amazing roads, and amazing driving! Well done team! Actually....... amazing camera work too. Love it all.

Totally agree! I was just watching this for the second time and halfway through stage 2 it hit me, these guys have the most perfect in-car camera setup. Most (even the supposed top professionals) have them mounted too high or low or too far forward or back. I suppose I helps the Datto doesn’t have the massive “A” pillars of the modern cars. Always loved the vision I had in my Datto. Haven’t sat in it for a while so I kinda forgot.
Great job guys. Awesome taking home the chocolates against that field and 4wd cars
I've watched a lot of rally videos. That was one of the most enjoyable of them to watch.
The 510 was a fantastic car as a rally car or a track car . Handling ,could be controlabe both under and overstearing or neutral handling . Good engine ,easy to work on . Miss the 5 that I had .
well done you kept it LIT throughout
Well done on the build. It looks like a dream to drive! Glad you kept a Nissan lump in there as well:)
That’s an insanely fast Datsun and you ooze talent with nerves of steel, I love driving fast but I don’t think I could push that hard 😮

Also congratulations to Kate as Well you guys are on to something I'm i impressed well done to the Datzilla crew
Well done Brendo/Kate and team
I freaking love Datsun 510's! Way to go sir, fantastic stuff!!!!
Great result! The Datzilla has to be one of my favorite builds. Those roads looked amazing! It would be amazing to see it compete in the US.

What a gutsy little car! Definitely punches above its weight. 👍😃
My aunty had the same model Datsun when I was young. I used to put my surfboard in the boot and head to the beach. Great to see one has survived after all these years.

Fabulous driving, the hairpins were nailed. A beautiful little car, to be so very competitive is astounding!
Congrats and well done to you both!
Every Aussie kid needs a practice circuit out home to rip around and hone their skills. Another great drive and team effort, glad you got the chocolates this time. That's why Beckham is a soccer player, he keeps bending them, Datto's rule

Thanks you. The build up and result of this one takes the cake. I don’t know how we can top it.
That motor sounds dialed in. Bravo.
What a great result. Excelent footage from inside and outside the car.
Love it! I used to have a ‘72 510 with head work, a carb and good rubber. Lovely little car, and a ton of fun.
Datto power all the way to the finish line 💪
Good God! Phenomenal stuff
Great result Brendo, absolutely love the datto.awesome cars the old 1600s.great driving as well.

Go Datsun my first car was a Datsun 1600 I also did a bit of rallying cheers legends ☺️
Well done. Fantastic results. Fantastic team. Great chap!
Imagine having all that technology 50 years ago & being twice as fast as the rest of the field!😳
@BrendonHart1
Жыл бұрын
I don't think that technology was available 50 yrs ago...gearbox being...one item that engine appears to be pretty punchy as well. Not sure what it actually is. Not to take anything away from Brendo was a fantastic drive!! Oh...btw i do rally myself, and use to race an old Fiat 131 and was right on the BDAs and RX7s tails. They were a bit pissed as i had 70hp less than them. Currently run an Evo 3.
Following team Reeves from Kenya right from car build! Congratulations and may the Datsun and crew keep winning.

Cheers for that. The roads were sensational.
That little Nissan gave its all and was enjoying it to the LIMITS but fantastic driving young man, you realy understood that baby well.
The thing that is amazing about the Datsun 510 is that it was competitive road racing and in rallying. Thank you for making a well produced video and sharing your win!
I had one back in the 80s it was a 510 model . I must have jumped it 200 times and it always landed flat never bottomed out.👍
ダツィラ - a weapon of science, a great battle of wonder and terror! A violent monster exhaling radioactivity plunges Gippsland into the depths of fear!
Man you are smashing!
What an amazing car youvé built. Nice driving on fantastic roads.
Nice Driving. Just keep it on Song AND the rest will come Along.
Well done to you all. Great effort and achievement!
Awesome! The car may be in some parts 50 years old but it has been "updated" a lot. Great drive, good video production, subscribed to see more good stuff!
Remember watching Geoff Portman in the Alpine Rally out of Bright in a Datsun 1600 winning, think 1982. Your car has a lot of tech his car would not have had. The 1600 was once the car to beat. Congratulations on your win.

'Go tha mighty Dato'!
Soon Happy for your win. All your smart work paid off. Rare is the " boot strapped " ( as we say in the states ) bringing a car on an open trailer able to take a home built car to victory against other teams with far greater resources. Great drive !
Awesome driving mate
Awesome job well done for you and your team
Well done to you Brendo, Kate and the rest of the team. Great footage/camera work and editing on these videos as well, top shelf!
Well done people. Amazing little car you have there. Had one that I played with in that area about 30 years ago when I was in the Pakenham auto club. Great video work too. Brought back a lot of good memories.
Baller!! That is absolutely awesome. I was a Subaru driver and did fairly well in the states for 8 years, but I always wanted to drive a proper Datsun. So nuts in the hands of a driver. Dude you crushed it.
Very enjoyable, you were making it look easy,
What amazing stages. Such an awsome part of the world. Keep up the good videos.
Well Done, Brendo!!
Brilliant result! Great video too, congrats.
Great video guy's
14:35 my fav turn. Awesome car, awesome driving! Great job of you two!
I built a 72. 510 in 2001 For the California Raleigh series still haven't Great job
bloody rippa
Beautiful car and excellent driving congratulations-i wish mine had a sequential 5 speed!
@brendorally

Yep mine is a 6 speed 😜
Wall done,, but the car is basically a 1600, everything else is far more modern or aftermarket. The same as most old shape rally cars though no aftermarket shells yet like Escorts and Minis etc.

Yes club rally car we can run an sr20 and upgrade the rest of the driveline if you want. If not you run in classics.
Congrats to all that datto sounds awesome and a menace on the road!

Awesome! I followed the early clips Brendo posted as he prepped this Datsun and he is an immensly talented engineer and driver too. The 1600sss was a very popular rally car in Kenya back in the seventies after the model won the 1970 East African Safari Rally. Like the Ford Escort Mk1 and Mk2, these cars are ageless. I wonder if Brendo's Datto is on a traditional Weber fed L16 or a fuel injected SR20.
What a great video
Go the Dato!
GO DATSUN! (I got 68 1600)

Very well driven. We still drive a Nissan although it's a Micra 1400. Goes like stink. Congratulations.
Smoooooth
Looks like you must have sorted out the brake problems you have been having! Car looked perfect (except for the wheel LH down....)
@brendorally
Жыл бұрын
Yep the brakes went pretty well. Yes the tow in on the left side and wheel down on the second pass made it a bit interesting to drive. 😂
The Datto 1600 has always been awesome on rallies. My parents bought one brand new and sold it 21 years later and made about a thousand or 2 on the new price. Only replaced the head gasket in that whole time. Great car.
Mine was lime green....still miss it
