Shock Tuning The Ranger - Reckless Wrench Garage

We are finally getting some shock tuning done on the Ranger! We spent some time with Dat Suspension here in Albuquerque, NM dialing in the bypass shocks and front coilovers on the truck. The rear suspension is a trailing arm 4 link suspension and the front is a 3 link setup. After a couple tuning sessions and some shock surgery, the ride quality was improved tremendously and we can go so much faster offroad now!

    The proof is in the slow motion footage. Shocks and suspension working hard while the vehicle body/chassis stays almost flat. Nice work. Nice tuning.

  • @RecklessWrenchGarage

    @RecklessWrenchGarage

    I would try softening the low speed first and see how that feels. I like to start from all the way soft on the clicker so you can feel one extreme then work firmer from that

  • @coldie5445

    @coldie5445

    So on my DSCs I have the adjusters all the way soft.. low speed and high speed.. But My bypasses are mostly closed. I opened the rebound 20 clicks, and the first compression tube 20 clicks.. Left the 2nd bump tube at 4 clicks so its still mostly closed and Ill use that as my "bump zone" since I dont have air bumps in the front yet.. Rear is a different story.. Working on perfecting those bypasses and I have air bumps back there so that helps alot. Im just having a hard time on knowing what the vehicle should feel like versus what I like. I dont care about how I like it.. I want it to preform exactly how it should and how its supposed to. @@RecklessWrenchGarage

    Nice job highlighting why tuning is important at higher speed. Are you tuned to crawl also or do you have to play with your compression adjusters? I usually have to change my compression adjusters.

  • @RecklessWrenchGarage

    @RecklessWrenchGarage

    If I was getting into a big slow rock section, I would probably loosen up the compression a bit with the adjusters.

    With the advances of ORI struts and all the trouble you've had with tuning valves and getting the right spring rates if you could start all over would you just throw on ORI Struts?

  • @RecklessWrenchGarage

    @RecklessWrenchGarage

    3 жыл бұрын

    No, I would never run ORIs on anything honestly. I think they are a cool concept and good for rock crawlers. IMO they can't keep up with a coilover at speeds over 30mph

  • @RecklessWrenchGarage

    @RecklessWrenchGarage

    3 жыл бұрын

    Not saying they don't have their purpose or do what they need to do, but I think a coilover is a better all around option

  • @RecklessWrenchGarage

    @RecklessWrenchGarage

    3 жыл бұрын

    Although I made a lot of changes to the truck when I swapped the radius arms out, I think this is the better version. I do believe that I could have made the radius arms this good in the high speed stuff though, I just prefer the "looser" feeling of the 3 link in the rocks.

    I think it would be great for rockcrawling. You can use a shorter shock and get more travel compared to mounting it on the axle. And for very lightweight vehicles, a trailing arms allows you to use heavier, more common springs.
