Shnootz - Reaction Video (Pet Shop Boys - I'm Not Scared)

What's up, folks! I'm back with another Pet Shop Boys reaction, and this time we listen to "I'm Not Scared" from their Introspective album (1988). This is another top track that blends stylings I've come to associate with their music with some outside-world sounds and notable flourishes. So join me for another ace PSB track, and just so you know, the video cut out on me during the outro but I felt compelled (and had the time) to shoot an add-on, so don't let the edit-flash throw you. Cheers!
Also I recently set up a Patreon, so anyone interested in supporting what we do on this channel through donation can go here. Cheers! / shnootz

Back in the 90s, I listened to this song hundreds of times while living in Bay Area, CA, but almost always during the cold, wet winter months, probably as close as CA gets to English weather. And it fit. The combination of a melancholic and driving-clank sound together with Neil's ironic, reproachful, demure, acquiescent voice was addictive. My brain wanted to comprehend everything that was going on, yet no amount of listening would get me to that point.

This is a cover but of one of their own songs that was performed by a British pop group called "Eighth Wonder", fronted by actress and socialite Patsy Kensit. Patsy started as an actress in commercials as a child (Garden Peas) and various TV shows later (soap opera "Emmerdale") and films ("Absolute Beginners" and "Lethal Weopon 2"). The main difference between the PSB version and the EW version is that the EW version has a sample sound "OW-OW-OWOW- OW" underpinning the track (similar to but faster than the one in "Love Comes Quickly" ) . Also although the EW version was a proper band with drums, bass, guitar and keyboard player , however despite that their version seems to be entirely Chris Lowe playing the music. It sounds like PSB with Patsy Kensit singing over it. The PSB one is more military like in pace with a heavier plodding drum with the French military band sample flowing into the beat. The EW does not have that using the "OW-OW" sample instead. Also the EW version has spoken French language in the bridge, and the B-side was sang entirely in French.

This is in my mind the best version! It's got a subtle epicness about it! Orchestral elements, the march driving rhythm and great singing by Neil! Great reaction as always and really like how you notice all details in your first listen!

It’s such a melancholy masterpiece!❤ Matt, my advice for the next tune, which is their famous cover of “Always on my mind”, one of their 4 UK #1s. IMPORTANT, pls listen and react to a 7” version before this - as they released it first. It will really do a favour to get this album version and make more sense of various bits of the track, including the famous riff of their version! On a side note: You love Shep Pettibone’s versions/remixes from the 80s. He did some for PSB after Please as well - some from Actually and Introspective!😉

Oh, okay, cool. I'm guessing one of the friends of the channel will have the 7" Mix, so I'll ask around for that and react to it first if possible. Thanks for the tip! And yes, looking forward to more Pettibone Master-Mixes! :D

Neil & Chris wrote this for the singer Patsy Kensit but much to their chagrin she released it under her band’s name Eighth Wonder. The riot featured is the 1968 Paris student protest.

The song is basically about a person in an abusive relationship where the other person is intimidating them , so the lover is getting away and fighting back. The dog theme repeats itself here (the mention of dogs and dog barks in "Suburbia", "I Want A Dog" ) and in the Eighth Wonder video the male members of the band look like gangsters with intimidating dangerous dogs.

Hey, Izzy! I'm going to piggyback onto your comment about the abusive lover and even how Eighth Wonder did a video dressed like gangsters. I was getting mafia vibes from this, if not some other sort of gang. The lover is a liar, hiding things from his past. But then the lines "I thought that if you paid, you'd keep them off our backs. Where do we have to be so I can laugh and you'll be free?" Just what is this guy involved in? Being blackmailed, surrounded by "dogs." I do love the turn song takes, becoming darker, when the narrator does decide, as you say, to fight back. It seems he's learned a thing or two and may have some "connections" of his own. Maybe he knows enough that he can expose this abusive lover himself. Anyway, I love your take on the song, and all the background info, too!

Already some great comments on this, and info from Izzy. It's a cool track especially as it takes a turn into darker territory. Someone who lies and hides his past, who has done things he has apparently been blackmailed for, has pushed his lover to the point where he may exposed...or worse, by his lover. The sonics change as the lyrics get menacing. I do have to say, I had a silly thought at the beginning of this: During the March I was waiting for Python to come on with News of the World. And I had to laugh at a startled Lucca as Matt announces the song I'm Not Scared. Yes, a video entertaining in more ways than one! 😸

I’m probably getting the quote wrong. I thought it was you who provided the quote but I could be wrong about that too. I know it was in relation to “That’s My Impression,” so I’ll go back and look later today
