@@chiefschicktx Somewhere in Season 2, there was a meeting with Shmuel and his new and rough friend from Jerusalem (I unfortunately forgot his name - Hannan ?). Hannan said that the Ethiopian woman was from the desolate backyard Capernaum, whereupon Shmuel pointed out to him that he was insulting the place where he (Shmuel) came from.

The very best line for me in the scene with Shmuel and Jesus is when Jesus says "she is preparing my body for burial". Shmuel and Judas don't pay any attention and fly off the handle, and then there's this little moment where Yusuf looks at Jesus and says "for burial?" he was the only one really paying attention. The look Jesus gave him was heartbreaking.

However, the information you listed about this Roman soldier actually comes from “the gospel of nicodemus”, which an extra-biblical source (ie. a source outside the Bible), and is not considered canon (and it wasn’t even written by Nicodemus, and was actually penned about 500 years later). Really? Chosen fans are still pushing this theory? Paul, the most prolific writer of the Bible, would have not only seen Jesus preach, but had direct interaction with him, rejected him to his face before meeting him on the road to Damascus? And never mentioned it? Never once thought to tell Corinthians or the Romans this little fact? Paul talked about everything and used everything at his disposal to convert the world. Talk about taking the teeth of what happens when he coldly watches St. Steven stoned to death. Not only would this theory be a terrible twisting of Paul's background, but it would be lazy, fanfic-level writing. "Everyone is someone else" level of poor writing. I would hope Dallas is a better writer than that. It's not clever or smart.

Well and if you read Acts, it is not until Saul hears Stephen that he starts his engagement with the matter of Jesus of Nazareth. He just happens to be present, hears about it, and begins to work against it. So it would not make sense that he is someone else, from a different background, already acquainted with the man before his death and angry at him, and not bothering with it until Stephen says something. It is likely they are old friends though, why not? They are both Pharisees. But not the same person, no.

Shmuel has obviously been written as a character from the theoretical 'opposition' that we have to love in spite of ourselves because of his dedication and genuine devotion to God. I can't see him not having a significant role to play in the future. His character arc is slow burning, I can't see it coming to a sudden end. I think he's too close now to be Saul, but i can't imagine him ending up as a minor character. My main observation is that by this point, he is probably hurt, resentful and feeling let down after putting down his defences and believing in Jesus.

No mention of Gamaliel, both of which Saul (turned Paul) was zealous, he was proud of his links with Gamaliel, and there’s no hint of this with Shmuel. Also, the elephant in the room is, why on Earth five gun a different name if this is the case? Why not keep him anonymous if this was their goal? We all have different ideas in our head how things could be or should be written, produced. Why don't you write your own story, film. @TheChosenSleuth Interesting theory Brandon. My gut reaction is, i dont think so. Saul persecuted his own people. He had a bitter, driven, angry edge on him. The Jews feared Saul and rightfully so. Shmuel here seems stunned and certainly dismayed in those final moments with Jesus. His Jewishness could not grasp the "new" testament. Shmuel will probably bring about Judas' final tragic decision. It remains to be seen how he reacts in knowing he helped set up the crucifixion of a man he wanted to understand. Its a big leap from the Shmuel we see here, and the terrifying persecutor that was Saul. Great call either way!

Your broadcast is a very helpful discourse to explore the various factions, as the established religious culture struggles within their world view, which Jesus has upended. It is not only the powerful religious leaders who struggle to understand the new perspectives presented by this culturally radical teacher, but also his own followers who are baffled as they grapple to understand and overcome cultural givens- the politics of holiness within a Roman occupied territory. We can understand with compassion that the religious leaders were both altruistic and self serving as they tried to protect the status quo, while trying to sort out the genuine from the false. In this century we have the knowledge of the bigger picture. We cannot imagine the first century mindset of how radical and revolutionary these new concepts were for the Jewish people at that time. We must allow the first century peoples the confusion, the fears, the misunderstanding of Jesus' teachings, as well as honour their courage and belief ; although they did not understand, they were willing to suspend their expectations and walk in faith although encountering tremendous obstacles and fears.

I'm not reading all the comments so I don't know if this has been suggested yet, but... we know that Jesus would repeat things He said. Why would people get upset if here in this scene (44:44) Jesus would say to Schmuel the Jn. 13:34-35 passage, as if Jesus could not repeat it later during the last supper? We're not there yet...maybe they will show that, too? I'd like to see it through and not assume what we don't know yet. This part with Schmuel is fiction. Not all interactions and conversations were recorded. It's amazing that we have the context that we do, and that is the genius of this show... it's giving us an insight, a different perspective on the times, the pressures, the political climate that they lived under during that time. @ChosenSleuth, I love these breakdowns! Keep up the good work!

Me neither. First, I don’t believe he ever met Jesus before the Damascus experience. Second, Saul is referred to as a young man in Acts 7 (Shmuel is in no way a young man!). Third, Saul was from Tarsus, not Capernaum. Also, some commenters have said that the name Shmuel means Samuel. I know the writers take some artistic license with timing of events, etc. But making Shmuel to be Saul would be too much I think.

The tension between Micah 6:8 and the passage of “Fear God, and obey his commandments…”the key is the final part of “walk humbly”. We all know, and have probably had moments if we are honest, of obeying the commandments, even out of fear of God, but with a heart that is not walking in humility. Rather, praying with an attitude too close to the one looking at the poor man praying and saying, “thank you I am not like this publican” (praying yes, in the temple, but definitely outward conformity but lacking humility.). I home educated our children, and am grateful for it as I look at them as adults, yet I observed, sometimes in that community obedience, even fear, but also a spirit that lacked love, that was dripping judgement. The look at me as I wear a dress (or dress modestly) or my kids always say “please” and “thank you”, “ma’am” and “sir”, or I make my own bread, or whatever. The externals are all fine? But the heart is what God cares about. The outward observances without humility (I am a sinner, and deserving he’ll, and without God’s mercy and grace, I would be heading to hell. Nothing I do earns me brownie points, or has anything to do with being born again. It is all Jesus. If we miss our own need, our own lostness, we will get arrogant or prideful in our obedience and it is as “filthy rags” (literally menstrual rags). When we get what our wages/payment is (death) and repent and trust in Him and not ourselves, we obey from a heart of gratitude, of thanksgiving and joy. It is so different than the “strivers” who lack joy, know they fall short, and our only point of comparison is Jesus, not a fellow human. Humility is the proof of genuine John 3, born again transformation. Without it Jesus says (John 3)! You cannot enter the kingdom of God. Even the Faith to place our trust is a gift from Him, nothing for us to take credit for.

I've been hoping for a long time that The Chosen portrays the verse where the curtain in the temple separating the Holy of Holies is torn in two after Jesus dies. I've always wondered how the religious leaders would have reacted since that would have been HUGE to them. If The Chosen portrays that verse, I personally hope that will have a big impact on Schmuel. Between that and hopefully having some time to think about Jesus' words in this scene after the shock has passed of Mary anointing Jesus' feet, I'm really hoping Schmuel changes his mind post-resurrection.

Shmuel cannot be Saul, because there is no way that the name change can be justified based on Biblical grounds. I don't think that Dallas would go as far as to create that alternate reality character. Youssef is Joseph of Arimathea, which is much more plausible. Paul is mentioned by Mary and others in the few fast-forward scenes of the future, and it would make no sense to later find that Paul was once Shmuel, no sense at all. Based on the Bible, when Stephen was stoned, Saul was a young lad who suddenly came on the scene. I believe that he may have been in Tarsus during all the commotion during the time Jesus was on Earth. I believe that Saul would have made waves in trying to stop Jesus had he been present when Jesus was still on Earth.

This would be the same reason why they aren't showing Mathias. The Chosen didn't show the 72 going out 2X2, they are only focusing on the 12. If they end with Jesus ascending into Heaven, then they wouldn't need to show the choosing of Mathias or Saul.
