This is hair-raising! I saw Grace Bumbry sing Gioconda at the Met several times and Verrett in a number of roles there as well. Both incredible artists!

I didn’t realise ,until I read the description, that Ms Verrett is 6 years older than Ms Bumbry. I always thought it was the other way around.

I really regret that Ms. Verrett never sang the full role of La Gioconda. I think that it would have been a pretty good vehicle for her.

This was great! Also very intense were Millo and Zajick in NYC from 2000. It's on KZread.
It was a really exciting evening. Wish we had singers of this quality today. What has gone wrong with modern opera singing?

Despite being iconic, I haven't found any good/high quality, stereo recording of this concert so far, I wonder if it exists hidden somewhere and when it will be eventually published or commercialized.

I think it was broadcast by the BBC but sound recording wasn't so good in the early 80s.

@@ahogbin2644 The 1983 Metropolitan Opera Centennial Gala sounds magnificently. It was a televised concert.
I’ve always wondered which of the two ladies had the bigger voice.
Se poi pensi che sei costretto ad ascoltare i mezzosoprani di oggi, del tutto sfiatati e senza un colore nella voce e per non parlare dello slancio interpretativo... e come conclude il duetto la Bumbry con un leggero e imperioso alzar di mano...
