1965 was made even more special because of this beloved little song. I fondly remember the kids at the local soda shop actually singing along with Ms. Ellis when she invites her listeners to sing along with the names: Tony-Tony-Bo-Bony... Billy, Marcia, and Nick. The kids would sing and have a good laugh at the same time. Thank you, Ms. Ellis! You brought a lot of joy into a lot of peoples' lives. Excellent video! Good synchronized hand-jiving ! Yeah, this song has incredibly catchy lyrics, but another reason it was such a huge hit originally is that the music itself is great as well. All the happy people in this scene on "Hollywood A-Go-Go" are able to dance to it, as you can see. That's another reason it still is being revived from time to time in the 21st century.

The name game. Shirley! Shirley, Shirley Bo-ber-ley, bo-na-na fanna Fo-fer-ley. fee fi mo-mer-ley, Shirley! Lincoln! Lincoln, Lincoln. bo-bin-coln Bo-na-na fanna, fo-fin-coln Fee fi mo-min-coln, Lincoln! Come on ev'rybody, I say now let's play a game I betcha I can make a rhyme out of anybody's name The first letter of the name I treat it like it wasn't there But a "B" or an "F" or an "M" will appear And then I say "Bo" add a "B" then I say the name Then "Bo-na-na fanna" and "fo" And then I say the name again with an ""f" very plain Then "fee fi" and a "mo" And then I say the name again with an "M" this time And there isn't any name that I can't rhyme Arnold! Arnold, Arnold bo-bar-nold Bo-na-na, fanna fo-far-nold Fee fi m-mar-mold. Arnold! But if the first two letters are ever the same Crop them both, then say the name Like Bob, Bob, drop the "B's", Bo-ob Or Fred, Fred, drop the "F's", Fo-red Or Mary, Mary, drop the "M's", Mo-ary That's the only rule that is contrary And then I say "Bo" add a "B" then I say the name Then "Bo-na-na fanna" and "fo" And then I say the name again with an ""f" very plain Then "fee fi" and a "mo" And then I say the name again with an "M" this time And there isn't any name that I can't rhyme Say Tony, Tony, bo-bo-ney Bo-na-na fanna, fo-fo-ney Fee fi mo-mo-ney, Tony! Let's do Billy! Billy, Billy, bo-gil-ly, bo-na-na Fanna, fo-fil-ly, Fee fi mo-mil-ly, Billy! Let's do Marsha! Marsha, Marsha, bo-bar-sha Bo-na-na fanna, fo-far-sha Fee fi mo-ar-sha, Marsha! Little trick with Nick! Nick, Nick, bo-bick, bo-na-na Fanna fo fick, fee fi mo-mick. Nick! The name game

This hit by Shirley Ellis hit #3 on the Top 40 charts in February 1965. It also hit #4 on the Rhythm & Blues charts. My cousins had a large record collection and her other hit, The Clapping Song, was one of them.
I wonder if Shirley Ellis knew this was going to be a classic. I love the 60s go-go chicks doing the hand jive in the background.
I ❤️ Shirley Ellis, she’s so smart and beautiful
I'm 65 years old so I lived thru these songs!
Thanks to my music teacher for teaching the whole school this song! This song is so CATCHY! My teacher gets irritated when we sing it!! #LOL NEVER GETS OLD! R.I.P Shirley Ellis
She’s an icon !
I found myself singing this song to my cats earlier this evening and was trying to remember where I heard the song. I've known it all my life but I still don't when or where I learned it. So I looked it up and found this video. It's a fun song to sing and you can use any name, your cats or dogs or anybody. The lady that sings this is really awesome at it too. I really enjoyed the video.
