The Isley Brothers - Shout

Музыка

The Isley Brothers are a highly influential, successful and long-running American music group consisting of different line-ups of six brothers, and a brother-in-law, Chris Jasper. The founding members were O'Kelly Isley, Jr., Rudolph Isley, Ronald Isley and Vernon Isley.
Starting their careers in the gospel performing circuit in the early 1950s, they eventually crossed over to secular music first finding modest success in doo-wop until the release of their first million-selling hit, "Shout", in 1959.

I saw the Isley Bros perform this in 1962 when I was a Junior in high school in NJ - they headlined a big Rock&Roll show at THE Brooklyn Fox. It was fantastic! They must have been on stage doing this for 20 minutes. The audience was almost as exhausted at the end as the 3 performers who were even more energetic than seen here. They jumped off a chair repeatedly & led the audience in the "a little bit softer now" & into the "a little bit louder now" w/ great enthusiasm. Now 58yrs later I can still "see" them doing that show. BTW a still relative newbie Dione Warwick was also in that show. But it was the Isley Bros who made the show! (I don't even remember who the other performers were..... :)

@@georgfriedrichhandel4390 The only possible thing I could think of why the song didn't make the Top 40, is its gospel music style, perhaps? The Isley Brothers did start out as gospel singers in the very beginning of their music career. Maybe some people viewed the song as too 'church-y'. I view it as brilliant perfection. What a song ❤

I don't know if the pop music listening world would have known what to make of this in '59. It may be rooted in gospel, but the screaming vocals and uptempo rhythm evoke hardcore punk a quarter century before its time. I hear this song when I listen to "Sailin' On" Bad Brains.

The history of "Rock" came straight from the gospel sounds of the deep south. Christians did exactly this music in their pentecostal churches. They wailed and shouted, moaned and groaned, jumped up and down in the Lords spiritual presence of their churches. The music helped sooth their difficult circumstances. This sound of praise and worship was picked up by talented afro musicians and brought to the so called secular music world. It was well embraced by many whites led by a one Elvis Presley. Many Americans who also wanted their spirits to be uplifted in their own privileged circumstances enjoyed the music... Isley brothers played their part...we thank them.

From Shout to Contagious Ron been dropping hits for 50+ years. You can't name another artist with his kind of longevity. Ron's voice is similar to fine wine. It's sad because he won't be truly recognized as one of the GOATs until he's gone. Easily one of the most recognizable voices in music outside of James Brown, Barry White and MJ.
