ABOUT this song:
"Send in the Clowns" is a song by Stephen Sondheim from the 1973 musical A Little Night Music, an adaptation of Ingmar Bergman's film Smiles of a Summer Night. It is a ballad from Act II in which the character Desirée reflects on the ironies and disappointments of her life. Among other things, she looks back on an affair years earlier with the lawyer Fredrik. Meeting him after so long, she finds that he is now in an unconsummated marriage with a much younger woman. Desirée proposes marriage to rescue him from this situation, but he declines, citing his dedication to his bride. Reacting to his rejection, Desirée sings this song. The song is later reprised as a coda after Fredrik's young wife runs away with his son, and Fredrik is finally free to accept Desirée's offer.
Sondheim wrote the song specifically for the actress Glynis Johns, who created the role of Desirée on Broadway. The song is structured with four verses and a bridge, and uses a complex triple meter. It became Sondheim's most popular song after Judy Collins and Frank Sinatra recorded it in 1975. Subsequently, Dame Shirley Bassey, Judi Dench, Grace Jones, Barbra Streisand, Zarah Leander, Tiger Lillies and many other famous artists have recorded the song, and it became a jazz standard.

Oh Shirley, you put your heart and soul in every song you sing, yours was the first record I bought when I joined the Women’s Royal Army Corps in 1961, and during my 6years service I built up quite a collection of LPs and I have played them over and over again. You really are a special talent that cones along only once in a lifetime.. I am now in my 91st year and still enjoy listening to you over and over again. THANK YOU. xxxx

Rosannasfriend It really is one of those songs where you need much under your belt before "getting" it. Have you listened to Sarah Vaughan's version? This is one of those songs where no matter who sings it, it will still move me. Cheers!

I well remember being outside her venue at Port Talbot, South Wales (not far from her birth city of Cardiff) on that very hot summers evening, lucky for me all the doors were left open so I could hear her sing for free as I laid me down on the rear seating of the coach. No microphones needed.

There will never anyone come close to Bassey
The voice, so addictive, she has such a big personality. When she sings its like a riveting speech, you hang on her every word and rise to your feet, it always ring true. She always makes magic out of phrases. I had been partial to Sarah Vaughan's version, but now I'm really torn after hearing Dame Shirley. Wow.

But, thanks to the magic of KZread and records, Dame Shirley's wonderful music will live on. Because of KZread, Shirley still continues to receive new fans every day. Most who come across her music are searching for a unique, powerful, electrifying, but consistently measured voice at all pitch levels. It's hard to find someone who has ALL these qualities.
