Lot's of great singers today, if you know where to look. I guess the closest analogy today would be Beyonce. I haven't listened to her enough to tell, but I don't think she can do what Bassey could do...and I don't think Bassey could do what Cassandra Wilson does. Bassey was a broad/loud Vegas style singer with a nasal timbre and exaggerated vibrato, similar to Ethel Merman. Like Merman, I get the impression she sang unamplified a lot in her youth. Make no mistake, I still think she was great, but there are many great singers today under the radar.

Totally agree with you! No auto tune here, no gimmicks, etc.. just pure talent, singing and entertaining! You can tell it takes a lot out of her! Another great performance of hers is Talk of the Town, 1972.

i watched this tonight here in the UK on bbc2, cant beleive it was 1974, just WONDERFUL, loved every second, Dame Shirley is 86 and still singing.

Well, diction helps understand the lyrics (which are often trite filler), but singing is really a visceral artform. Bassey was quite adept at it. I generally prefer Nancy Wilson, and Ella was the best of the best, but this concert is spectacular.

Hands down the best female artist of all time. So talented. So expressive in her songs. So much heart and soul. Not just a singer. A true entertainer. So damn gorgeous. I was only two when she was doing this concert but my goodness, that beauty. She’s 82 now. And I still think she is beautiful. Much love to you Dame Shirley😘

When you meet Shirley,over a period of years,in your work, as I did.I worked at The Dorchester Hotel,and served/met her on many occasions,and I (and the other staff) became a part of her extended family,and she treated us like that too.I went(with some colleagues) to this concert,with tickets(best front row seats) given to us by Shirley.We had drinks and canapes after in her dressing room.Offstage Shirley is an ordinary,kind,thoughtful,quiet person (with a great & risque sense of humour).I have many great memories of my time at The Dorchester (many film stars etc) but they are dwarfed by my memories of Shirley.

Shirley Bassey my favorite female singer known as " The Belter" for her powerful voice. I love her song "Never Never." Thanks for posting.

What a major talent. I loved her singing ever since I was a kid and fell in love with her rendition of Goldfinger. She doesn’t even need a microphone, and she can easily reach the back row of the Albert hall with her singing. It really makes you realize how far we’ve fallen with our contemporary music and singers, who fail in contrast.Look at the intensity of her emotions as she sings it’s all written there on her face. What is a Beyoncé compared to a Bassey? A hollow shell.

😲😳 wow...many accolades had been said about her but watching her perform now and how she deliver every song was an absolute perfection! Her stage presence though is something else to talk about. She was giving you that visual of how a great storytelling is done. No one can make good covers out of her songs, it's rare you can get at par with this level of artistry.

After watching Shirley at the Baftas last night I decided to revisit this. This is Bassey at her very best. Its a masterclass.
