I was on a Navy destroyer some years back in the North Atlantic in January. I was an engineer for Lockheed Martin and we were on sea trials prior to selling the ship off to the Navy. We ran into a typhoon. Fortunately, we steered mostly clear, but got caught in the fringes for several hours. We had huge waves breaking easily over the bridge wings of the ship, which would make the waves at least 80 feet high. I actually had a great time admiring the magnificence and power of the sea, but it tossed that ship around like a cork in a bathtub. It is a force to be reckoned with and taken very seriously.

I live on the North Sea coast & have done my whole life. I've seen some brutal seas over the years. But God only knows how bad the Seas were miles off the coast. The local fishermen have seen it all, for me they've either got a death wish or they're just mad. I'm actually sitting in my car looking out at the Sea right now. It's a pretty calm day today but last week there was a storm & it took the top of one of the light houses off.

The waves on the great lakes may not reach the same size, but that doesn't make them any less dangerous. Seeing those super massive waves, I notice something similar. In stormy seas the first big wave lifts them higher, only to crash hard into the second one. Lake Superior develops the Three Sisters. First one lifts, then you hit the second hard, and the third one hits hard a fast. Waves are spaced closer together, so, it's rough going when you are caught out in horrendous conditions. I'm a Great Lakes sailor, but I am on a 40 footer. Storms can form out of nowhere, with no predictions calling for it. It's best to know what to do if you have to save yourself until help comes. Have a plan, and follow the plan. Panic is not an option.

The container ship didn’t “collide “ with the wave. Colliding is a situation where something is avoidable but a mistake was made resulting in a collision. This ship was travelling on a course through waves. The same with the trawler I’d didn’t nearly capsize it was going through the waves very well. Capsizing is when the waves hit the ship on the side and the ship rolls over. If you use words in the wrong context or explanation it just makes you look foolish.

It could be that the vessel you see is not meant for use out on the open sea, but only for rivers and canals. There's a similar-looking video, Mothervessel Arvin that breaks in half as it just can't cope with medium-size waves. kzread.info/dash/bejne/mZWOytCHnNjapbQ.html I only learned later that especially Panama-flagged ships, with underpaid crews sail on these boats. They are cheap as they are usually in bad condition and certainly not seaworthy. The fact so much water stays on deck, strengthens my idea that the vessel in the first clip of this compilation is not meant for the rough seas, but only for quiet rivers and canals.
