I mean, it's true - she really loves to torture (her characters? her readers? both?)

I think when you have read the whole series, you will realise why reading in the chronological order works best and is more rewarding. You have a long way to go and I envy you reading these for the first time, you are in for a real treat.

I always choose publication order, and tend to encourage others to do so as well, but if reading out of order gets people reading Hobb I'm all for it

I filmed so many Hobb videos yesterday cause I just finished Ship of Destiny and the entire series was 5 stars for me, so good!! I am glad I read Farseer first just cause there are things you pick up on in liveship but its also not plot important for either book, I would compare it to how its beneficial to read cosmere books in publication order but not essential. I kept waiting for the big spoiler in liveship and there really isn’t one in my opinion, especially if you have no context. I also think this series hurt me more than Farseer but also isn’t as a lot as Farseer like what you were saying and I think for all the reasons you pointed out. But for me the first 150 pages of Ship of Magic were so hard for me to read cause I was so angry and frustrated and that level emotion never really happened for me in Farseer.

Got the first 2 trilogies of realm of the elderlings (and soldier son trilogy) all for free with my audible subscription. It was a limited time promotion, but WHAT A GIFT. I started with Liveship Traders (whoops, but it seems like you could start with either liveship or farseer and be okay) and WOW. Best written characters I have ever read. I am almost done with Mad Ship and it just gets better

Ship of magic was 4 stars for me… I have issues with it. I personally prefer Farseer but Tawny Man beats them both.

I am so glad you loved it! I’m in Tawny Man right now and Liveship is my favorite that I’ve read! Farseer boasts my favorite male character ever and Liveship boasts my favorite female character ever 😊 I also would never recommend someone start with Liveship unless they didn’t enjoy Farseer, just bc there are some really satisfying Easter eggs in addition to some slight spoilers 😊

Glad you are loving my favorite living author. There are absolutely reveals and moments in Ship of Destiny that won’t land at all if someone reads Liveship prior to Farseer. Publication Order, Always!

You don't love Kyle more than Nighteyes? 🤣 Having read all of the Realm of the Elderings I would not recommend Liveship first. I think Liveship is better. But all the Fitz books own my soul. And you said, what will you do when you run out of Hobb? Reread. Thats it, no one comes close to her.

Kyle can choke and kick rocks. that's what I've been doing with Abercrombie, so when I get through Hobb I guess my tbrs will just be rereads of Hobb and Abercrombie forever more haha

You should red Farseer first- there is a reveal at the end of Ship of Destiny that if you haven’t read Farseer, you won’t pick up on. And the books just get better and better…

Farseer trilogy really disappointed me in the end and I'm still not in a big fantasy mood after my reading slump, so I haven't continued the series yet. But I do hope to come back to it this fall!

How much time did it take to complete 1st book, of liveship series?

I feel exactly the opposite. I still dont get the love for Farseer, and didnt care much for it, but I am so invested in Liveship

I've been told Hobb shows she is one of the masters of limited 3rd person perspective in this series. I've only read the first Farseer book so far, so I'm far from getting where you're at.

I liked Kennit a lot. Loved him actually, and his whole back story. But then Ship of Destiny happened and he did something, and I’m so upset by it. But for sure, he was a traumatized kid and as an adult, he continues to perpetuate that trauma. My only consolation is that there was justice in the end.

I read Fitz's trilogy, then skipped the ships and started the fool's stuff. I'm enjoying the first book of that series.

I'm reading this one right now and the pacing of these books continues to be annoying, I'm thoroughly enjoying what is going on on-page, but the slow progress of the plot and repeated discussions are a little grating 😞

it's definitely a slow burn, but I don't mind because I'm not in a hurry to leave Hobb's stories

I much prefer the liveship trader series I hated assassins apprentice 🤔😁😎😃

Assassin's Apprentice wasn't as strong a start as Ship of Magic, but I love the Farseer trilogy as a whole

Hobbs is such an embarrassing gap for me. Everything I hear tells me I'd love her. 'Demands more of my soul' sounds exactly like what I look for in books. Someone needs to make me sit down and start 😅.

If you are an audio book person, the first trilogy is great that way. Its the easiest time I've had paying attention to audio.
