Ship of Magic by Robin Hobb | Spoiler-Free Book Review | The Liveship Traders Book 1

Hi everyone! Today I will be reviewing Ship of Magic by Robin Hobb, Book One of the Liveship Traders Trilogy. Overall, I found this to be an incredible story and display of everything I love about Robin Hobb’s writing and is currently my favorite Realm of the Elderlings book so far! Despite missing Fitzchivalry Farseer and the rest of the characters from the Farseer Trilogy, Hobb proved to me that the time spent away from them is more than worth it and I can’t wait to read on in Liveship Traders with The Mad Ship and Ship of Destiny. I hope you all enjoy the review!

Liveship is amazing. I don’t think I will ever love Hobb character as much as Fitz and the Fool, but Liveship is the most polished and “flawless” of Hobb’s trilogies.

Yeah absolutely! I'm sure I will feel the same way when I'm at that point in the series just due to the amount of time you spend with them! I definitely miss reading about Fitz and the Fool, but thought the departure from that with this book was fantastic! Excited to share my thoughts with you as I move on through the series as you've read it all! Thanks for checking out the video Ian!

Is it just me or does Alex really look like Henry Cavill!? I am reading Madship now and I know I sound crazy when I say that it is such a positive improvement on Ship of Magic( I had rate Ship of Magic 5 stars). I really need more stars in my toolbox by the time I finish this entire series. My favourite character is Wintrow too! Also, most loathsome is Kyle and he gets worse in Mad Ship. Loved this review, Alex! Love the way you articulate your thoughts so well and structure them into such an enjoyable review. ! Waiting for your MAdship Review.

I love that you mention trusting Hobb. I always feel like I'm in the hands of an excellent storyteller when I crack open any Hobb book, and I feel like a big component of that is HER trust in US--the reader. She never talks down to us, and as you point out, she let's us make up our own minds about characters as they slowly reveal themselves (often even to themselves). Speaking of trust, your spot-on take on this (one of my all-time faves), as well as other great takes, has me gaining a great deal of trust in you as a reviewer whose tastes match pretty darn well with my own. Thanks for that. Keep up the great work!

Yes! That’s exactly how I’ve taken it as well and that trust that Hobb gives to us as readers for her characters is one of the reasons why her writing has resonated with me so much! I can’t wait to keep reading on in RotE and I definitely see myself rereading the series multiple times down the road! Also, thank you so much for the kind words! I really appreciate it and your support and thank you so much for watching!!

I personally enjoyed this trilogy a lot more than Farseer and I think it was because of the multi-pov as well as the super cool Liveship magic. It’s fascinating to hear your thoughts on the characters with just book 1 knowledge! My favorite in Ship of Magic was Ronica. I was so angry with her at first but I appreciated that she was willing to admit her mistakes and tried to correct them. And I found Wintrow really compelling too.

Very good review, especially with your clear focus on the characters - something that I find to be in the centre of everything I have read from Hobb. My favourite characters in the entire trilogy were Ronica first and then Althea together with Brashen. Also, I generally loved most liveships, and who wouldn't be fascinated by the psychopath Kennit? I could never really warm up that much to Wintrow, as I found him simply to be too "whiny" 🤨 Can't be a hundred percent sure but I think that I liked this one the most of all the three excellent parts of the trilogy.

Yeah at this point I’m almost finished with Mad Ship and already some viewpoints I had on characters from Ship of Magic have been changed quite significantly so I’m excited to talk about it! I really enjoyed Althea and Ronica in SoM and I never found Wintrow too whiny, but I did find Malta rather frustrating in that first book! One of the best things about Hobb is all of the different takes readers have about the characters! It’s always so interesting to hear! Thanks for watching!

Thanks Kyle!! Hahahaha I’m going to disagree with you on your thoughts on Wintrow lol, BUT I will say that so far, that’s one of my favorite parts of Hobb’s books: all of the different takes readers have of different characters and what characters different people connect with and why! There are not a lot of series that do it to the same level I’ve encountered with RotE! Kennit is fascinating and as I’m making my way through Mad Ship, it only increases! I absolutely agree with you on disliking Malta in Ship of Magic though…I found her to be incredibly frustrating!
