Ship Chat: Hideki Class

Ойын-сауық

Today we look at one of the most ubiquitous Cardassian ships. The Hideki class Escort. this simple yet iconic gunboat entered service during the 2360s and would be instrumental in not only the Maquis conflict but also the Dominion war.
But was it truly suited for the task at hand? the only option in a bad situation?

    Unique! A Cardassian purpose built ship for a function that serves competently and ably, is reasonably future proofed, has no glaring weaknesses (so long as it was used to it's function). A perfectly competent ship well suited for it's role as a gunship or corvette/screener.

    I've always loved the Cardassian type of ships in Trek, something about them that makes them more unique then most of the major powers, and this just proves it more. The Hedeki is the "Destroyer Escort" of the Fleet, Not as showy as the destroyers but when you need them, you always have a few around. I wonder if they even have names, or just numbers

    The Hideki class seems to be a combination of a Type 95 Ha-Go light tank and a Q-ship. Small and relatively weak they would not stand a chance against any of the larger crafts they would likely go up against, but have a decent amount of numbers, though would still have to focus on evasion; Were often used by civilians and lasted quite a while longer then the initial war they fought it. They seem they would be semi-effective tools for the purpose of anti-piracy, that is if they don't get used by pirates themselves. Also look like a horseshoe crab.

    It sounds like the Hideki serves several roles. On one hand, it seems like a constable vessel (law enforcement), similar to US Coast Guard vessels. Some USCG vessels were designed with the capacity to be up armed in case of war. On the other hand, they seem to have a function similar to WW I fleet destroyers, screening the fleet from fast, nimble torpedo boatsin addition to making their own torpedo runs to disrupt opposing capital ships.

  • @justinwallace269
    @justinwallace2698 ай бұрын

    Totally agreed. Ships like these are excellent in swarms protecting a Galor or Keldon class from other maneuverable ships. What's interesting is the choice to use beam weapons. These are far more accurate than disruptors or pulse phasers, so an attack wing of Hideki would do some serious damage damage when firing in as a group. We've seen how effective Jem'Hadar ships are with them in groups. I've always thought of the Hideki as the Cardassian equivalent of the Federation's Venture class (The same ship Data used to chase off a Son'a science ship in Insurrection). With the element of surprise, these little ships can do a decent amount of damage to smaller ships. They seem to be one step up from fighters.

    The thing I love about the Cardassians is how blue collar they are as a nation. Federation hulls look expensive and good at everything, like those Bentley minivans. Romulan hull materials look like they're designed first and foremost to become invisible. Klingon hulls look like they're far better at surviviing a disruputer blast than the radiation of a dying star or an acidic atmosphere. But the Cardasian hulls look like they're the cheapest materials the Cardasians could find to build an effective starship. A material with the word 'crude' or 'base' in the name. And it happens to be that orange/yellow/taupe color because they didn't feel like adding the process to make it look like materials normal people would use. That's so Roseanne. If the Federation is Chelsea, the Cardassians are Birmingham. And, in that light, what would the Hedeki be? I'd say not even a minivan, but an actual van with a bad ride and no ac but you can sure use one if you're a plumber or a carpenter. Or am I reading too much into it.

    A good comparison. It's also worth bearing in mind the cardassians are a military junta. And have little care for aesthetics. But looking at the postwar designs in STO they are far more elegant and artistic in their design

    The Hidekki seems to be treated like a torpedo destroyer. Kind of reminds me of a Flower class corvette if anything, provided air cover and all that. lightly armed with only one deck gun but can carry a lot of depth charges and torpedoes; saw mostly action against U-boats. Uncomfortable for its crew, but it does it job. Seems to be something that would blitz towards an enemy ship or station, launch a ton of torpedoes and get out as fast as possible. Its size as well could just get it treated like a bigger fighter, flying at the head of a squad to draw fire so that they can get in close.

    First, a like. Second, a subscription. Already done. Third, a contribution. Oh wait I’m poor. I’ll leave that for the future sadly. You make good to great content! That only leaves a comment. Someone needs to do an in-depth on the best possible class of ship in Star Trek. They need to take into account the accuracy or weapons systems, the amount of hard points utilized, the power of shields and armor, and the basic limit of doing reasonably. Consider this. Phasers and proton/quantum torpedos are more or less 100% accurate. A ship must be able to survive a hit to get into weapons range or be able to deliver a non-negligible hit before being destroyed. A Runabout class ship is basically a large fighter that can survive multiple hits due to shielding, but cannot delivery a combat worthy payload. Therefore, you can make a ship that is less survivable but has a more powerful payload. A.K.A, heavy fighters are a viable option in Star Trek. Simply arm a heavy fighter with 1-5 proton torpedoes and give it shielding to survive 1-3 hits to delivery its payload. On the other hand, hardpoints seem limited on Star Trek capital ships. Maybe a Galaxy class or a Romulan Warship, forgot the name, or a Galler class or a Klingon BoP can kill a heavy fighter or 2 every second, but what if there’s a hundred or a thousand of them each armed with a proton torpedo? Unlike phasers or disrupters, which are tied to a ships power output, torpedos are small, single use, weapons of incredible power. They make numbers a deciding factor. Think fighter bombers in WWII. I know Star Trek is a world of immense ships of incredible power, but with one critical failure. You can fire a weapon of incredible power from a tiny craft that costs a minuscule price compared to your great ship. How many fighters with 1-3 proton torpedos can you build for the price of 1 galaxy class? Certainly enough to destroy many, many Galaxy class ships. I hope I’ve inspired some deep thoughts. I know I haven’t since I was born, but there’s always hope right. Right???

    I like this explanation of the Hedeki class. It makes much more sense compared to seeing them be the starship equivalent of the Red Shirt guys. It is a shame that the Cardassians themselves did not see the true potential of the Hedeki class ship. The Cardassian Union, if the people were not so stifled by the military and Obsidan Order, the more business minded Cardassians could have used the Hedeki as a tool for diplomacy and economic growth too. If I were the Cardassians in the pre Klingon Invasion times, I would have turned the Hedeki into a giant export. Sell the Hedeki just like what the USSR did with the AK-47, T-55 and MIG-21. Sell the ships or even licensed production to local regional powers and minor planets; make them become dependent on you for stuff. Now of course you would create a Cardassian only version of the Hedeki; just like how the USSR sold 'export' versions of the MIG-29 and so on. Then use the good trading relationships to earn money that can fund other things like building a better Galor class cruiser, be able to afford to build more Galor Threes, do better R&D, have access to more raw materials since you can import more of it and etc. Next you just keep improving on the Hedekis.... Now that would be having the Hedeki's live up to its full potential.

    Another interesting video. One thing did occur to me watching was the mention about it being an answer to the Defiant. Previously I'd thought of it more akin to the runabout, in that it was a small starship, capable of multiple mission types where a larger ship wouldn't be needed. Obviously on a larger scale than the runabout and with a more militaristic society designing it. However the defiant comment did make me think of the other anti-borg ships and there being a certain degree of overlap in design. Heavier frontal armour and a flattened hull shape giving it a low target profile. Clearly swarm tactics work best against borg cubes so it's not too hard to imagine a scenario where either the Cardassians had some intelligence on the Borg, either through the Obsidian order or some limited encounters of their own. May be a stretch but not impossible to see the Hideki as being developed for the same reason as the Defiant, with Cardassia's far more limited resources and tech.

I presume you are referring to the person who ordered a on a certain harbor which in returned later caused "The Land of the Rising Sun" to have a double sunrise on two separate occasions. I've honestly never actually realized the name connection until now. I wonder why the showrunners chose it for a Cardassian ship?

I just see a lot of similarity between the Hideki and the original master display panel of the Defiant with the stubbed nose. Maybe it’s the other way round and the Defiant model was made from the Hideki. I believe that the Nova class design was also considered for the Defiant but was dropped.

    Maybe I’m just seeing things but the Hideki and the original display of the Defiant that was shown in the briefing that Sisko gave to the command staff looks closer design wise, the nose is stubbier and the aft of the nacelles is wider. I just though maybe they’d picked up that design and recycled it somewhat as they seem to do with most designs. I do really like the Cardassian designs, the look robust but also organic. They looks like they could bully there way into a space whilst daring the opponent to challenge them, just on presence alone.
