Galor class cruiser, review 84, Star trek

#startrek #cardassia #sciencefiction
The Galor class is among my favorite alien ship classes in star trek, in company with the D7/Ktinga of the Klingon empire, the original Romulan Bird of Prey and D'Deridex from the Romulans, as well as the Vulcan and Andorian ships from Enterprise. It is an icon of deep space nine, though the class first appeared in the next generation alongside the Cardassians themselves.
Unfortunately the ship is usually depicted as quite weak, being repeatedly destroyed by starfleet ships with relative ease even after the ships recieved presumably significant refits after Cardassia joined the Dominion just prior to the Dominion war breaking out.
So in this video I am attempting to explain why this is, presenting the Galor not as a failed unsophisticated ship, but the logical extension of very realist policies made by Cardassia which took their situation into account and created a ship well suited to the needs and circumstances of the state it was built to defend.
Hope you enjoy this video, I really liked making it and it is one of the longer ones on the channel to date with alot of detail, as well as a lot of history to cover.

I have loved the look and style of Cardassian ships since first seeing the Galor class in the TNG episode "The Wounded". Thanks for an awesome review!

I love the Galor class ships, and the Cardassians as a whole. I don't know if you know this, but the original design of the ship had those two prongs on the back being the main disruptors. Each TNG ship style was designed to reflect the race. Klingons had big guns pointed forward, they were very aggressive and direct. Federation had small weapons merged into the hull, they weren't aggressive but could fight if needed. Romulans had hidden weapons in ships that hid, they were sneaky dicks. And Cardassians had rear facing weapons, because they were like fighting a snake. You'd have ships on guard duty with the ship pointed toward Cardassia as if ready to flee, but the big weapons pointed to enemy space. You didn't know if they were going to attack or run. They bit when you didn't expect it and chasing them after they struck was more dangerous than letting them flee. Cardassian combat strategies were meant to be so foreign and different from what the rest of the 'forward thinking' galaxy thought. But they didn't hide their nature like Romulans, instead they broadcast it for all to see like the Klingons by making those weapons big and visible. Sadly, the ships designers failed to tell the writers, or the writers ignored that, and we ended up with forward thinking Cardassian ships with forward facing weapons. But the attitudes of the Cardassians as proud and untrustworthy, of 'backward thinking' and snake-in-the-grass we still got. Just not in their battle tactics.

DS9 is my favorite ST series. The Cardassians are a well written species of that lore. I have a copy of A Stitch in Time and re-read it periodically. I really enjoy their history and how they interact with the universe as a whole.

I was pleasantly surprised by the length of this video and really loved hearing your personal opinions at the end. Although I admit to liking many of the ships from the major powers, I love the Cardassian designs and agree that they are an interesting species. Although some of their technology is behind some of the other powers, their spiral wave disruptors are pretty effective. I can't remember if this is canon, but I thought the Galor could land and a planet and disembark troops from the bay on the bottom. I do wish that the Galors were a little bigger or that it was clear that they travelled in packs. What their individual ships lacked in strength they made up with a large fleet of experienced Commanders because of constant border skirmishes with the Federation and Klingons. Although not specifically stated, I would suspect that their fleet was out of position when the Klingons invaded due to Changeling subterfuge. On a final note, my favourite Cardassian ship was the Tonga class from the Dominion Wars games.

Yeah, I try to make generally shorter videos, I could talk for hours about most ships in most sci-fi but nobody would probably want to listen to the whole thing. But for some designs I am trying to make larger videos to cover more ground. Glad you liked this first attempt.

I really enjoyed it. What can turn me off is unnecessarily nerdy things that feel like they mean nothing. It has 16x 12 gigawatt phasers, or a warp core that can generate 15 megacochanes of power. It's nice to know its size and how long it has been in service... but as stats go, it's much more relatable to find out what part it plays in the fleet and in combat. @@starshipreviews

Great video man, I'm always here for more Cardassian propog... uh, content. They are compelling and their aesthetic is fire. Have you seen the Hutet from the old Dominion War games? the Galor is better looking but the Hutet had a presence.
