A second away from catastrophe at every step. Some people are born to ride those lines and throw caution to the wind. I understand the danger but I find this to be beautiful and I am glad that someone captured it. Some people sky dive, some do this.

What terrifies me the most, is that he grabs with his left hand to a rotating saw blade every few seconds without looking where he is grabbing to...

He is a seasoned sawyer, he keeps his mind on the task at hand. He knows where the sweet spot is on the headrig.

The boss, First day on the job: “the job pays $7.50 an hour, and here at the mill we work 10 hour days, with a 15 minute break every 4 hours. You stand right here between these two spinning blades and do this. This blade to your left will slice off one shingle per second so you have to keep up. Any questions?” Me: “can I smoke while I’m working?”

First job was loading blocks on a forklift, building pallets keeping the shop floor clean. I got to try my hand at packing when someone was away. I was to slow. They had a new Sawyer come in I think he had 7 fingers or so. He had quit smoking and bought mopars w the money he saved. At the end of the summer I figured out my uncle paid me $3 an hour, but he made it up giving me his home stereo system. He ended up losing the mill, couldn't find good lumber I guess. Good memories.

I see two chutes your chucking shingles into. Are you grading these puppies as you go (clear, 2nd clear, etc.)? You're not in Maine are you? I didn't hear an accent, but you didn't say much in the video either. And how'd you make out with whoever said they were from the Discovery Channel?

Hello. Wash State. Yes. Grade into #1 and 2. The number 2s are better than most #1. These trees have over 100 growth rings per inch. This video was filmed 8 years ago. No TV show pursuits for the sawyer.

Must be nice only having to grade for #1 shingles..this video was 9 years ago and now as a sawyer it’s mostly grading #2/3 and unfortunately #4 In short term, he’s not having to look for knot placement as probably most of his 18” blocks have no knots…look at a crappy block nowadays and there are sometimes 4-5 knots a block

Jeff White Good morning Jeff, “Cyber Athlete” is just my personal KZread account and has nothing to do with my work. Refers to my love for video games actually :) And I’m definitely not an entertainment lawyer! I am a producer for an upcoming show for The Discovery Channel and we would like to showcase your expertise in shingle saws for us! I can’t say much more publicly due to non-disclosure agreements, but assure you this is 100 legitimate, otherwise wouldn’t have spent so long just trying to figure out how to message you haha! You may be asking yourself why we are contacting you instead of the other sawyers on KZread? Well for starters, shingle sawyers that can use this old school technology are already a rare breed. You guys are like unicorns and very hard to find. But furthermore, as dangerous as it already is, you show a calm, cool, and collected demeanor with the limp cig in your mouth, we saw your video and were like “THIS IS THE GUY WE NEED TO TALK TO!!” Honestly Jeff just need a minute of your time to describe what we are doing and hopefully you’ll be interested! Thanks for reading this! Oh and one more thing: my email address is short for Original Productions. Will probably delete this post once we start chatting. Take care Jeff! Really hope to hear from you! Please email us / me!! Thank you again!

As a longtime installer of wood shingles/shakes we used to find cigarette butts IN the bundles. Mostly Export A’s! We figured it’s the safest place to put the butts- in a bundle of wet wood.

I used to work as a carpenter, and we did maintenance work at a plywood mill it was a full-time job replacing and repairing the roof above the dryers from the fires that were started from the embers coming from the dryers they kept a three inch fire hose on the roof just to put the constant smoldering fires out . they never replaced the wood glue lams and plywood sheeting with Steele we would just throw in another wood beam and sheet it with more plywood did that for fifteen years
