Hi T. I tend to use a stiffer rod. I like to have a little more control and "feel." I also tend to use a larger reel. I like to cutdown on the number of wind / turns coming off the reel. I think it helps with line twist. Sounds like the new rod will be for heavy cover fishing. Take care and good luck, Mickey

Nice honest review Tracy. I love Shimano reels but only own a few of their rods.. I've got a 7' Skeet Reese Medium power fast action rod (Shakey Head/Senko model) that I won in a bass tourney and I love it. Sensitive but with enough power to get them out of some minor slop. And it's not super expensive. The only thing similar is that it has the hook keeper down low and it's not too sleek looking with that gawd awful yellow. Thanks for picking up after the lazy bums who leave their trash on the waterway.

A similar rod that you might like better is the ALX Zolo SpinSkip. 6’9” M+ rod. Tip of a medium rod, backbone of a MH. Made for, as the name suggests, skipping Senkos and small jigs under docks and trees. Pretty sure the butt section is a good bit shorter than the Zodias and it has cork and EVA composite grips. Quality rod made in SC on an American made blank.

Wonderful share! Might you be able to send me the length in inches from the reel seat to that first eyelet on the Kodias and the same measurement on your St. Croix rod (what St. Croix model, btw). That was a fantastic concern that you brought to light with the inherent twisting of the line using the Kodias as well as the wobble on the retrieve. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed this video! We applaud your trash pick-up effort. It's very sad that the need exists. We're looking to pair a new Vanford 2500 with a very nice rod for freshwater bass fishing: largemouth and smallmouth. Spinnerbaits, Slug-Gos, warms, Rebels, Rapalas ... basic stuff ... typically in the 1/4oz to 5/8oz lure size. Any rod recommendations would be wonderful: Shimano, St. Croix, Loomis, ... etc. 7' ideally. Many Thanks!!!

Just compared my 6'6" Expride spinning to the 6'6" St. Croix spinning and the first guide is only 2" lower on the Expride. All my other Exprides are casting rods and really love them, also have a 6'0' (Amazon woodchopper rod) and 6'10" last generation Zodias MH casting rods with the EVA grips and really like them too. The guides are a bit bigger on the Zodias vs. the Exprides (all casting) which is nice, not a micro guide fan.

I have one of the new ML BFS American casting rods. Exact opposite purpose you have for your rod. Really nice rod. The tip is a little faster than I normally like but it makes a nice spinning rod “replacement” for the tasks most North American anglers use spinning rods. Not a true BFS rod but much lighter power than most casting rods on the market in the US.

  • @helotaxi

From a spinning rod casting performance, the sooner the loops coming off the reel are focused the better it casts. If the loops are too big, the line hits the rod blank and slows the line coming out of the reel.

So what do you think of the problem that I'm having? I had this same reel on my Avid X M Fast rod and it performed just fine. To me, it feels like that first line guide is either too close to the reel or maybe it's too small? It felt really odd to me.

If you can get your hands on a Jackson Super Trickster, do it. I have the 6'4" L casting rod, it's magic. The BONE 6'3" BFS is great also, a bit stiffer tip and you'd never guess it's a four piece travel rod. Also, just looked at my BONE Voyage spinning rods and the first guide is further up but haven't noticed any line slap or vibration.

@@OldLadyAngler Sorry, was responding to Kung Pow re; the BFS rods, Asian rods. I've had two popular custom rod builders here in Broward and Palm Beach counties say they would have to charge $500 to build one of the $170 Shimano Trevala S rods because of the nice blank and components (just checked the two spinning versions I have for jigging, the first guide is only 13" up from the reel seat). All of the rods I have built now are from Howard at Poseidon, right near me and incredible service. I do have two Bull Bay casting rods, good prices, very light weight, made in Lakeland and also great customer service. They have a large variety, worth checking out.

Hi Michael. I only got to use it twice. I broke the tip off when I set the hook into a submerged tree. I sent back to Shimano and they approved a replacement but who knows when they'll send it. I've heard it takes a few months. I really did not care for that line slap and also the metallic part of the rod butt. I got an Expride and I'm much happier with it. But in all honesty, I love the St. Croix Avid X rods that I have. I have 3 of them and they're awesome. The only reason I got the shimano is because I could not find a M/H avid x spinning rod in a short length. The Expride has a little bit of line slap but nowhere near the Zodias. Could just be my set up though. I'm using 15 lb braided line. God loves you too!

I'm not a tourney fisher but I like quality (and that sometimes equates to pricey)! I've been looking at the Zodias, Expride B, and even the Poison Adrena, all med-light. I appreciate that concern you brought up and my buddy has the same rod but with a Vanford 2000; he says he's not noticing that funneling restriction at the 1st guide but said maybe he's just never noticed it....he uses his mainly for dropshot, ned, and neko. My intention is to pair one of these with a Vanford 1000F and I'm wondering if maybe because 1000 and 2000 have smaller spools than 2500 and 3000, the line won't act that same way because of narrower coils coming off the smaller spool. But this is really a strong consideration and I'm now leaning on the Poison....YIKES!! But oh well, my b'day is day after 4th of July so I'm gonna hopefully take advantage of a sale at Tackle Whse or my local tackle shop. Thanx for this great review and THANX HUGE for your environmental efforts as well!!!

Ney Nateroo.... glad this review makes you think about it. Another possibility for the line issues at the first guide could be that I have 15# braid spooled on it. If you're using it for lighter duty, maybe you'll have different line on it? I have to say, I like the Expride A a lot better though. If cost isn't an issue.... check out the St. Croix Legend Xtreme. My goodness that rod is outstanding. But I'll warn you.... the price will knock you off your feet. It's perfect for finesse tactics though. Paired with a vanford it's smooth as silk

@@OldLadyAngler Hi OLA!!! Actually, I do have a Legend Xtreme in Med-Light that was a gift to myself and paired with a Stella 2500...another YIKES.... But you are aboluly on point, that St Croix Legend Xtreme is just downright top shelf! I LOVE my baitcasting gear, but I sometimes go out with nothing but light gear. Sometimes nothing but spinning gear so I can use all this neat stuff I got stupid and bought. What really gets me is these other bass purists who call spinning rigs "sissy sticks", "fairy wands", "egg beaters" etc, and the funny thing is, Major League Fising pros are winning the Cups with spinning gear!! And what avg fisherperson learned on a baitcaster? Kills me!! Anyways, back to the subject... I also use 15lb and sometimes 10 or 20, but I use power pro super 8 slick so it's softer coming off the spool. When I know I have distance to cast, I often don't feel any resistance. But I LOVE any sized fish hookups on light tackle! Like I said, we're not tourney fishers, we just like hookin' up and lettin' em go to become someone's PB. Thanx huge for being cool people!!! :)

So is anyone else having issues with these rods breaking??? I’m on my third one that just broke on me. The first one broke at the tip at that time my boy was working at BP so took it back. The second time I just got it back from warranty exchange two months ago or less. Fished with it around 3 times and I baby the damn thing. It broke a quarter of the way from the top while casting. This last time it broke in half while casting. All I use it for is throwing dead shrimp on a 1/16 jig head. It’s the 7’ MH so it should be more than enough rod for that. They travel with rod warrior neoprene covers and neoprene reel covers. All rods ride up in the cab of my truck so no slapping around in bed of truck. I have custom rods by fish stix, J&H and H&H that have never broke once. They treated great as well however not babied like this Zodias. Thanks for the review, very informative. All that trash! Why are people so lazy. Thank you for taking care of the lakes you fish. I find myself doing the same thing.👊

Change your reel to a 1000-2000 it casts better

I was hoping to actually increase size to a 3000. It doesn't make sense that a 2500 reel is too large for this M/H rod.

I will never understand why people try and fish heavy cover with spinning equipment. When I'm fishing heavy cover I don't want a reel hanging under the rod. It's counter intuitive to winching fish.... You're just making it harder on yourself. Good review though.

Well.... it allows me 100% better accuracy in the area I fish. That's crucial. This rod was bought specifically for light grass and lily pads. No wood. And I've fished this way for years. I have no problems winching in the big fish. None at all. My 9+ pounder two weeks ago was in grass and trees..... pulled in on a M/F St. Croix Avid X and a Stradic 2500.
